回溯
Retrospect
I completed my undergraduate studies at Southeast University and pursued my graduate studies at the Mendrisio Architecture Academy in Switzerland. During my four years in Switzerland, I also gained practical experience through internships. The master’s program spanned two years, with a significant portion of that time dedicated to learning under the guidance of Valerio Olgiati. Olgiati’s teaching approach presented a paradigm shift for me. While other instructors often focused on functional considerations rooted in site characteristics, Olgiati took a different approach. He initiated discussions from a linguistic perspective, employing a highly abstract thinking process to unfold architectural concepts. Instead of starting with external conditions, he began with vocabulary, shaping the architecture in a unique way. This approach was remarkably innovative for me, and I also admire his works.

While studying at the Mendrisio School of Architecture, Hui Pan studied under the studio of Valerio Olgiati
During my student time, I had the opportunity to explore various destinations, and my experiences are closely tied to Olgiati. In my final year, I traveled to India and Egypt, and during my European studies, I ventured to Brazil, Japan, and numerous European locales. I believe that travel holds great importance, perhaps even more than formal education. As an architect, firsthand experiences with diverse architectural environments are crucial, and I find that travel enriches my understanding significantly. One of the most pivotal journeys for me was my visit to India during my undergraduate studies. Exploring historic sites like Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj Mahal left a long-lasting impact on me. It was a revelation, marking my first encounter with spaces that were truly astonishing and emotionally stirring. This journey refreshed my understanding of spatial experiences, revealing what makes spaces unforgettable and genuinely captivating. This insight continues to shape my design philosophy, with a strong emphasis on prioritizing spatial experience as a cornerstone of architectural expression.

Founding Studio
I was fortunate enough that upon returning to China, a teacher from Shanghai offered me an invitation for the “Huzhou Tea House” project. Seizing this opportunity, I established my own studio. This project allowed me to truly immerse myself in independent design work, marking a crucial milestone in my career. Currently based in Shaoxing, Jiangsu. Our studio consists of three individuals, including myself. Many of our projects are located in Jiangsu Province, primarily through connections facilitated by our mentors. We have encountered numerous mentors and benefactors, and I am particularly appreciated their help. This year, our focus has been on participating in design competitions, and fortunately, we secured a win. We hope to complete some projects in the coming year.

从Idea出发
Start With An Idea

In terms of working approach, we initially invest a substantial amount of time in the pursuit of a central idea. Centered around this idea, we systematically evaluate every aspect to ascertain its viability, ultimately uncovering new potentialities in architecture. This idea may not be confined to a single word; it could be a combination of words, a phrase, or a distinctive experiential concept that shapes the ultimate spatial concept. The majority of our designs stem from a focus on structure and space, with our projects inherently intertwined with structural considerations. We begin our process by examining issues through the lens of structure, recognizing that while structure serves space, the experiential dimension of space remains a pivotal element.
Our overarching objective is to discover novel possibilities in addressing architectural challenges. These architectural possibilities may initially appear unconventional, yet upon closer reflection, they reveal a rationale that underscores their validity.

Space Has The Right To Be Beautiful
I believe that as long as there are people in a space, it has the right to embody beauty. Beauty doesn’t necessarily require a higher cost or extravagant expenditure; on the contrary, it can be achieved in a very cost-effective manner, presenting a striking aesthetic. Even though it’s a garbage transfer station, and the underground space may only be experienced by garbage truck drivers, I feel that it still holds the power to transform into something beautiful.
A garbage transfer station inherently has a specific and well-defined functional structure and spatial layout. With limited creative flexibility, our approach focuses on utilizing the existing vast and unconventional spatial dimensions, coupled with the framework system, to craft a beautiful experiential environment. The strategic installation of large skylights becomes a pivotal technique for us. Integrating skylights not only adds a rhythmic quality to the facade but also creates a captivating interplay of light and shadow within the interior space. This interweaving of light, shadow, and structure generates a multi-layered sensory experience, offering ample space for imaginative exploration. This concept draws inspiration from the mosques I encountered during my travels in Egypt. Thus, we aimed to apply a similar approach to evoke a sense of beauty within the handling area of a garbage transfer station.

In the upcoming decades, its functionality might evolve, but the fact that its space embraces a sense of beauty allowing people to appreciate its aesthetic value. Kazuo Shinohara also expressed a hope that architecture could endure over time due to its beauty, regardless of any shifts in its functionality. I strongly agree with this sentiment. This is precisely why we aspire for our architecture to become more beautiful, as aesthetically pleasing structures inherently stand a better chance of being preserved.

Material and Structure
We don’t have a specific bias towards materials; our choices depend on what best suits the project. However, we do have a preference for using one or two materials to create a sense of envelop within a space. A minimal use of materials intensifies the perception of entering a distinct realm. The visual effects resulting from the interplay of light, shadow, and structure in such environments provide a serene atmosphere, inviting contemplation and imagination—this distinctive realm creates a feeling of envelop. Currently, we are particularly intrigued by the idea of working with exposed concrete due to its simple yet impactful aesthetic. The prospect of using a single material to shape all spaces aligns well with our design ideals. However, achieving outstanding spatial effects with exposed concrete can be a costly endeavor. If the opportunity arises, we are keen to explore and experiment with this material.

As for the structural aspects, whether it’s steel, wood, concrete, or brick construction, I believe each can create a compelling spatial experience. In comparison to structure, our emphasis lies more on the spatial qualities. The key consideration is how to craft a superior and distinctive spatial experience. The structure serves as a means to facilitate the realization of this spatial experience. In our projects, columns take on diverse forms, all strategically chosen to amplify the spatial experience. For example, we utilize petal-shaped columns with elliptical bases and pointed tops. This structural design introduces an element of instability, generating a sense of lightness in the roof due to the small support points. This imparts a sensation akin to a floating cloud, bringing about a dynamic shift in spatial experience through the varied design of columns.

Sketch of Restaurant in the middle of a sea of flowers
Restaurant in the middle of a sea of flowers – petal-shaped structural columns
The structure, in essence, serves the purpose of enhancing the spatial experience. In projects like the Nanjing Wutongyu project, where a steel structure is employed, our aim is to create a roof that exudes lightness. To realize this, we introduced variations in every angle of the columns. The slender columns create an illusion of being delicately swayed by the wind. Functioning as both compression and tension structures, this deliberate contradiction intensifies the perception of lightness.

Teaching: Open students’ MInd
I collaborated with Professor Wang Yifan to conduct a design course at Southeast University, where our working methods and thought processes closely aligned with our daily practices. Students were tasked with finding an idea and initiating the design of an architectural project. Hence, I believe that teaching and practical experience mutually complement and inspire each other. At the same time, I also enjoy the process of teaching. Simultaneously, I’ve observed various challenges, including a potential decline in students’ reading habits. Understanding a master’s work, in my view, necessitates a systematic review of their projects materials from start to finish—an essential part of the architectural learning process. Engaging with architecture firsthand by exploring the world is the most critical method of learning; without it, producing outstanding architectural designs becomes challenging.

The new generation undoubtedly brings its strengths – their perspectives are more global, and they have access to a wealth of information compared to our time. However, the key lies in their ability to make discerning choices. You have to think of yourself as a member of the international community, competing on the same terms and communicating with young architects from abroad. In the studio I share with Professor Wang Yifan, our goal is to expand students’ horizons, offering them exposure to diverse ways of thinking and guiding them to reevaluate the potential in architecture. Engaging in work that aligns with your passion, immersing yourself in it everyday, and finding joy in the process, I believe, constitutes the path to true happiness.

Current Status and Future Goals
Our studio has been established for six years, managing to survive each year without significant profits. Located in the small city of Shaoxing, where rent is relatively low, we’ve managed to lower costs down, which is a key reason for my decision to stay in Shaoxing.

In the coming spring, we will begin the construction of an activity center for a school in Xinjiang. Nestled beside a sizable pond, our design encompasses an L-shaped building around this water feature. Furthermore, our collaborative team with Rong Chaohui and Song Peng from ECADI has recently won a competition in Suzhou. The design entails a series of small-scale structures, each standing independently, yet collectively forming a cohesive system. There is a potential for the realization of this project next year.

Many inquire about my goals, and I respond that I don’t have specific ones. If pressed, I express the desire to construct a house each year that brings me current satisfaction—I already consider that immensely fortunate. Our ambition is to engage in more projects that dazzle with innovation, introducing new types of endeavors. Executing a project exceptionally well, infusing it with distinctive features, and delivering an entirely fresh spatial experience pose our most significant challenges. Discovering our unique stylistic language and values, forming an entirely distinct judgment on design or the world, represents our ultimate aspiration. It’s a lifelong endeavor we are committed to.
