Appreciation towards Minax Architects for providing the following description:

Dali is unlike any other place I know. I grew up in Yunnan, hearing its iconic phrase on repeat: Wind of Xiaguan, Blossoms of Shangguan, Snows of Cangshan, Moon over Erhai. I’d heard it so many times it began to feel like empty poetic ornament—until I traveled the country working in design and came back home. Only then did I grasp its unvarnished truth. The winds here bite sharp; wild flowers bloom untamed; snow-capped Cangshan looms heavy overhead; sunlight glints off Erhai’s waters so fiercely it stings your eyes.

Dali’s light carries an uncanny sharpness. Walk down a lane in Wenbi Village at two or three in the afternoon, and the sun blazes like a blade, slicing the white partition walls of Bai folk houses into stark geometric blocks of light and shadow, no soft gradients to blur the divide. Dusk transforms the landscape entirely. The sky blazes burnt crimson, and Erhai melts into a sheet of smoldering bronze, its glare stirring quiet restlessness. Light warps time here: moments stretch thin, then snap short without warning. Most visitors arrive eager to step away from mundane routines, and Dali delivers exactly that—a sense of time untethered from ordinary reality.

The local homestay market is drastically oversaturated. The owner shared hard figures: over seven thousand licensed guesthouses operate in Dali, with unregistered inns pushing the total close to ten thousand. Altogether they hold more than 123,000 guest rooms, yet supply has ballooned four times faster than tourist arrivals in recent years. Occupancy hovers around forty percent, with eighty percent of these properties running at a loss. Dali hosts the most brutal homestay competition across the whole country.

Jimu was renovated a decade ago. Back then, Wenbi Village held far fewer buildings, and this lakefront retreat stood as the village’s first genuine design-driven guesthouse, commanding the highest nightly rates for years. Over the past five years, wave after rival property has sprung up around it. The building aged too, and Jimu slipped from the town’s most coveted stay to just another decent option. Its owner approached me for a full overhaul, hoping to carve out a distinct competitive edge in this cutthroat market.

Overall sectional view ©MINAX

Renovation of Manwu Jimu Guesthouse Dali by MINAX

The core dilemma was straightforward. Jimu once stood out for its intentional design language, but newer rivals boast fresher builds, lower prices, and far bigger marketing budgets. Relying solely on the label “design guesthouse” no longer turns a profit. Minor cosmetic tweaks would shift nothing. Pure lodging alone cannot sustain a business here, as four-fifths of local homestays prove. We also faced tight budget restraints that ruled out large-scale demolition and reconstruction. I weighed every angle and landed on a quiet formula: minimal construction costs, maximum memorability. Dali overflows with pretty homestays; what it lacks are true destinations—places people will travel specifically to visit, spaces that beg to be photographed and shared online. Put plainly, we needed a unique identity, and one rooted in thoughtful logic, not arbitrary novelty.

Dali is a land made for dreaming, not merely for its postcard scenery. Wind, sunlight and clouds shift so rapidly here that the boundaries of everyday reality soften for anyone who lingers. Dreams follow no rational logic. Fragments of days—faces you’ve seen, roads you’ve walked, half-formed thoughts—shuffle and recombine into uncanny scenes. You recognize a street or a stranger, yet nothing quite lines up. Emotion takes center stage; reasoning fades into the background.

That eerie sense of familiar unfamiliarity brought René Magritte’s canvases to mind. Clouds drift out of houses, hats float suspended mid-air, day and night crammed onto a single frame. His paintings offer no neat explanations, only quiet visual truths. Dali’s clouds operate the same way, drifting and dissipating between Cangshan and Erhai, woven through shifting light and wind with an innate narrative rhythm. I wondered if we could translate that dreamlike logic into built space: a setting that feels simultaneously recognizable and alien, with no heavy exposition required.

I did not overthink the choice of violet at first glance, though hindsight brings artistic justifications. Magritte’s dreamlike cloudscapes share this exact hue, a middle ground between warm red and cool blue that sits perfectly against Dali’s cerulean skies and muted teal lake waters—near, yet distant. If forced to articulate its metaphor, violet mirrors the dream sensation of something vividly present yet forever out of reach. All those readings arrived after the call was made; I picked the shade purely from intuitive feeling.

The original building stood plain white, identical to every neighboring homestay. We laid violet surfacing and sculptural elements across its volumes, stripping it of its generic identity as just another white villa. Sharp geometric edges gave way to soft, layered curves echoing the cloud banks rolling over Cangshan and Erhai. Violet is no decorative accent here; it forms the foundational tone of the entire site.

The ground-floor patio and second-story green roof had long sat underutilized, so we reimagined them as sprawling observation terraces with organic, billowing outlines edged in curved metal balustrades. Viewed from afar, the platform reads as a violet cloud resting atop the building—a comparison I hesitate to lean on, yet no phrasing captures its silhouette quite so accurately.

Pale yellow lounge chairs dot the terrace, creating a striking yet gentle color clash reminiscent of Magritte’s canvases. The two hues hold their own without harsh clashing, settling into quiet harmony. A sculptural white cloud installation anchors the roof’s center, strung with a yellow swing. Mirrored panels thread through the terrace layout, merging sky, mountain ranges, the lake and visitors into a single reflective plane. Physical borders dissolve; space stretches outward, folding back on every mirrored surface to expand endlessly.

We fitted a Mirror Hall on the second floor. Partition walls, ceilings, even supporting structural columns are fully clad in mirror panels set atop violet flooring. Step inside and disorientation strikes instantly: silhouettes of Cangshan, ripples from Erhai, drifting clouds and blocks of yellow furniture reflect, refract and multiply without end. It becomes impossible to tell which wall opens outward. Though none of these chambers are large, standing inside wraps you in unbroken mountain-and-lake vistas on every side.

Sunset delivers its most breathtaking moment here. As the sun sinks behind Cangshan, a final streak of golden light slants into the chamber, igniting the violet floors in a glow no artificial lighting could replicate. I advised the owner to keep overhead fixtures minimal—those thirty minutes of twilight are the room’s finest feature, no embellishment needed.

We converted the stairwell leading to the roof into a violet tunnel, a liminal passage bridging mundane reality and the surreal world above. A rectangular yellow frame encloses a window set within the dim corridor; that single splash of brightness frames terraces, lake and distant peaks into a living, shifting painting. Visitors exist both within the framed view and apart from it.

The four suites on the top floor each draw their theme from Dali’s timeless fourfold ode: Wind, Flower, Snow, Moon. These four phrases have defined the region for centuries, yet few resorts translate them into tangible spatial language. The Wind Suite suspends 0.2-millimeter electroplated violet stainless sheets overhead. When gusts sweep through, the thin metal clinks softly, lending audible form to invisible wind. Our first prototype used thicker plates that refused to stir in the breeze, forcing a full rework of the installation.

The Flower Suite lines walls with cut panels of translucent colored acrylic, spaced evenly across the room. Natural light filters through the slices to cast gradient floral patterns across floors and walls, blooming inward toward a central focal point that frames Cangshan and Erhai as the flower’s heart.

The Moon Suite draws from an older installation of mine, the All-One Tea House, built from 999 pine timbers stacked from discrete points into a rounded volumetric form. An oversized circular aperture frames both the moon and the twin landscapes of mountain and lake. Coated in the signature violet finish, the space shifts from misty haze to crisp clarity with every shift in daylight.

For the Snow Suite, layered perforated panels hang from the ceiling, their graduated cutouts evoking snow drifts piled atop mountain summits when viewed from afar. Steel-framed cloud viewing decks wrap the original structure, pushing the building’s boundaries outward and carving intimate pockets into the grounds. Circular stone planters encircle mature courtyard trees, while curved upper terraces cast undulating wave shadows below. The wash of violet transforms ordinary courtyard greenery into something otherworldly.

A lush mature tree stood trapped on the hillside, inaccessible to guests before construction. We wrapped a cloud-shaped viewing platform around its trunk, turning it into a vast green parasol. Violet surfaces catch its shifting foliage shadows, with Cangshan and Erhai stretching as the backdrop; anyone standing beneath the tree becomes part of the landscape itself.

Night transforms the guesthouse entirely. Its bright, vivid daytime palette fades, leaving a violet-lit structure that blurs the line between architecture and sculptural art. Pinpoint roof lighting and warm glow from the cloud installation drift across Erhai’s dark waters, resembling a full moon floating on the lake surface. Concealed color-shifting LED strips line overhangs and interior ceilings, shifting the space’s entire mood on command. Mirrors catch ambient night light, blurring the divide between tangible space and reflected illusion. This after-dark atmosphere remains my favorite iteration of the property. By day, Jimu shines bright, bustling and vivid; after dusk, it settles into quietude, wrapped in a soft violet haze like a private secret barely shared with outsiders.

I visited shortly after completion, arriving a little past five in the afternoon. The sun hung low, gilding the violet terrace and sending endless mirrored duplicates of sky, mountains and guests rippling across reflective surfaces. Wind stirred the thin violet stainless sheets overhead, their faint tinkling clear against the empty rooftop expanse.
One guest sat silent on the yellow swing. Her silhouette fractured into dozens of mirrored copies, and I could no longer distinguish which reflection held the real woman.
Dali’s daylight fades fast, as the moon climbs slowly over the ridges of Cangshan.
