Oversea HUANGZIYING

Why going abroad?

It was simply out of the urge to see what was out there.

What impressed you the most when you are abroad?

Nature is so accessible here in California, the past two years have made me realize how much I get recharged from nature.

What do you miss the most about China?

Home cooking, the air filled with Osmanthus fragrance, a long walk along the West Lake on a summer night.

Will you come back? Why?

I don’t have plans to move back for now. Maybe looking back years later I’d find myself reckless and naïve. But at the moment I just know that I’m still nurtured by the Californian coast, and I don’t see myself as ‘L’Étranger’.

Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?

I guess it just has allowed me to look at it in different perspectives, not necessarily clearer.

What are the educational characteristics of your school?

The most memorable part is the connection between the professors and the students, I’m grateful for them always being present, devoted, and truly caring about us and our work.

What are the characteristics and interesting points of your firm?

The scale (30 people) makes it a close-knit community, where we work closely with each other while our distinct personalities are maintained.

Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?

There are things that don’t directly impact my design work but keep me passionate about it in a vague and indescribable way. I really enjoy watching movies with interesting set designs, such as Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which opens so many possibilities for space in a captivating way. I like playing with colors, so I also enjoy looking at paintings sometimes, like Richard Mayhew’s landscapes paintings.  If we’re talking about something closely related to landscape design, I’ve recently found myself inspired by Luciano Giubbilei’s design a lot.

What fascinates viewers the most in your portfolio in your opinion?

Haha, I think to be charmed is quite elusive and personal. However, I personally enjoy focusing on how specific individuals will experience the spaces I create. Even though projects at Penn often began with large-scale systematic frameworks, I always tried to return to spaces that people can truly feel. I couldn’t always achieve what I wanted due to time constraints, but it’s better than not trying at all. Another thing is that I’m constantly looking for simplicity in my works, but obviously still learning.

When did you start to follow gooood? Any suggestions?

When I was in college.  I read about Overseas a lot and was inspired by the stories all the time.

A Memorial for The Future – Climate Migration in Brooklyn
Upenn Studio 701
Instructor: Matthijs Bouw
Collaborator: Elisabeth Machielse

Communities are being affected by climate risks unequally, and they always confront these risks as separate entities. In Brooklyn, communities along the coastline are the first to face sea level rise, sometimes requiring a retreat strategy. The retreating communities often experience a sense of loss – the loss of homes, the loss of identities. On the other hand, the receiving communities also face challenges such as housing and energy shortages, among other resource shortages.

Oversea HUANGZIYING

This project has explored an approach that allows people from different communities to confront climate risks as a cohesive whole. At Gerritsen Beach, the design focuses on three phases: providing shelter and recovery resources, transitioning to an educational park, and developing new habitats for the changing ecosystem. This approach acknowledges the emotional and physical losses faced by the retreating community while preparing the area to become a habitat that also protects inland areas from flooding. At King’s Highway, the design focuses on fundraising, developing housing, and building a cohesive community to support incoming residents.

Within the team of two, my role was to focus on the retreating community design. What’s special about this project to me is that, unlike other projects exploring ways to elevate or protect the neighborhood, it has allowed me to accept the fact that sometimes the role of designers is not to protect people directly from climate risks, but to enable them to see it, learn about it, and remember it.

Oversea HUANGZIYING

Through reshaping the landform and adaptively transforming existing homes into public educational spaces, including an interactive floating structure, the design turns something imperceptible into spaces that are visible and tangible. It envisions Gerritsen Beach transitioning into a habitat for a new ecosystem, thereby contributing to resilience against flooding in Brooklyn’s inland areas.

Blue Corridor as Industrial Community Armature
Upenn Studio 601
Instructor: Muhan Cui, Nicola Saladino, Chen Chen, Ellen Neises
Collaborator: Youzi Xu

Tianjin, as the port city with an ongoing legacy of coastal trades and industries, is now facing severe hydrological problems: scarcity, accelerating upstream pollution, and high groundwater salinity. Situated in such context, compounded by its unique industrial heritage now threatened by the top-down land-use & relocation policy, the town of Gegu with Rockcheck Steel Plant as its biggest manufacturer urges a resilient framework to both honor its cultural identity as an industrial powerhouse and restore a healthy link between the people and water.

By transforming the invisible to visible, imperceptible to sensible within proposed blue corridor, a new cultural nexus is formed for people to innovatively participate in various treatment processes which address local and regional water crisis, while also attracting external flows of users and investments to the region. The steel-making industry acts both as a strong collaborator and a co-beneficiary during such process, performing a sustainable counter-act against its own outdating production modes. This project thus takes a stand as a prototype for industry and people co-evolving in lieu of changing environment.

Balancing Acts – New Industry Rooted in The Local Community
Upenn Studio 602
Instructor: Zachery Hammaker
Collaborators: Larissa Whitney, Marissa Sayers

Balancing Acts reexamines the historical typology to explore what the industrial village could be in the modern era. Using the existing community character as point of departure, our framework combines elements of renovation, revitalization and new development. The relationship of public and private, work and play, day and night, industry and community, inspire a design where growth occurs in equalizing flows.

West Philadelphia High School Activity Space Design

During my academic journey, I gradually realized that human-scale spatial design is what excites me the most. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been involved in large-scale projects that developed my ability to think systematically. However, in my final semester at Penn, I was looking to engage in a project that delves into very specific, practical spatial design, ideally one with a potential of being built.

Oversea HUANGZIYING

This project explores the student activity spaces at a high school in West Philadelphia. After multiple rounds of discussions with students, we settled on designing a greenhouse next to an existing building. Due to budget constraints, the design utilized modular greenhouse components to maximize flexibility and interest without the need for custom fabrication. The process of creating handmade models and 1:1 scale furniture was also incredibly rewarding and refreshing.
