Why going abroad?

Studying in the United States offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the forefront of landscape and urban design theory and practice. The U.S. provides a rich environment for personal growth and professional development. The decision to pursue studies in this dynamic setting is driven by a desire to learn from the best, enhance my skills, and explore new horizons.

What impressed you the most when you are abroad?

In Los Angeles’ Tongva Park, designed by James Corner, I observed almost every bench occupied by a homeless individual. It was then that I realized the stark disparity between the vision and reality— a revelation of how landscapes can be used by homeless people.

What do you miss the most about China?

Family, friends, food, and public safety.

Will you come back? Why?

In the near future, I have no plans to return to China, but I intend to visit more frequently to spend time with family and friends. However, in the long term, I am considering returning to explore different possibilities.

Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?

After going abroad, I gained a clearer understanding of the differences in the design industry between the United States and China. In China, landscape design relies more heavily on real estate development, whereas in the United States, landscape design is more independent and mature.

What are the educational characteristics of your school?

Cornell University places great emphasis on research, with a significant portion dedicated to preliminary investigations in design projects. Simultaneously, the design process encompasses diverse scales and environments, allowing for the exploration of various topics such as social equity and ecological conservation. Landscape architects are poised to intervene at a wide range of scales, in myriad contexts and for multiple constituencies.

Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?

My favorite illustrator is Jimmy Liao, a Taiwanese picture book author. I deeply admire his positive attitude, gentle inner world, and his passion for life. Jimmy Liao portrays the human soul with a whimsical, fairy-tale-like style, keeping me in touch with my original aspirations.

What fascinates viewers the most in your portfolio in your opinion?

My portfolio focuses primarily on addressing societal issues. During my undergraduate studies, I was taught that ‘design can change the world.’ Therefore, I possess a strong sense of humanitarian concern, aiming to use design to tackle social issues and create more equitable spaces. This is also why I learned design.

When did you start to follow gooood? Any suggestions?

When I first started learning design, I began following the Gucci website. “Abroad” opened a window for me to understand the outside world when I applied to study abroad. As for advice, I’m interested in what senior designers are doing today, ten years later, whether they are still in the field of design or pursuing other careers.

Justice O
Caleb Smith\ Penny Crispin
2023 International Design Awards, Honorable Mention

Justice O is located in Oakland, California. The city has identified a site in Downtown Oakland as a development opportunity. We provide a vision and proposal to transform the site into a thriving, mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood. We are seeking a vision for the area that will increase connectivity to surrounding neighborhoods, provide much-needed services, and address critical issues of equity and housing affordability in the city and region. We offer specific ideas for making the freeway underpasses more humane and increasing accessibility from the site to West Oakland, Jack London Square, Chinatown, and other adjacent neighborhoods.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

Then we did a site analysis including density, land use, urban transit, and more. Then, based on the current situation, we proposed four strategies. The most important one is social infrastructure, which consists of the social justice center, affordable housing, and maker space. These connect meaningfully with the surrounding context.

1 Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

2 Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

We can see on the master plan that a social justice center in the middle can provide job training, community kitchens, collaborative workspaces, and a small business incubator. Number 6 is a maker space, and the social justice bridge connects the two to form the central loop. We planned the surrounding area for affordable housing, commercial building, hotel, parks, light industry, and others.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

Let’s look at some critical nodes. The first one is the city plaza. Before, it was an Oakland police department, which will be demolished soon. Since it is at a crossroads, we planned it to be a mix of commercial complex and retail, where people can go shopping,  hang out, and visit art exhibitions.  The park connects West Oakland and Old Oakland and gives people a place to play ball and spend time in the sun.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

The justice bridge connects two sides of the highway, and we transformed the space under the highway into a park, including an outdoor studio, playground, and table tennis.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

Finally, we drew the renderings in Lumion and Photoshop, such as Jefferson Square Park, the freeway skatepark, the Social Justice Center, and the Justice Bridge.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

At last, we proposed a two-phase financial plan for development.  First, we planned to develop the central part to address social injustice and housing problems and then develop the surrounding area.

Radiant Dharavi
2020 WUPENICITY International Competition on Student Course Work of Urban Design, Nomination Award

The site is located in Dharavi Slum, with 20 hectares, 60000 residents, and 16 toilets. Being short of toilets, residents defecate outdoors daily. It leads to environmental pollution and serious health issues. Meanwhile, due to high population and building density, public space is deficient, traffic is chaotic and residents’ health is affected. So the design combines toilets and public space. According to different land uses and demands, I design different “toilet+public space” typologies. They will improve public space quality and change residents’ sanitation consciousness. A corridor is designed among these toilets to connect them. Finally, it will form a public space network. In the future, Dharavi Slum will be a healthy home.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

First, I researched the toilet history in India and found that there were limited toilets in Mumbai. On the site, 60000 residents lived there with only 16 toilets.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

Since the Dharavi slum is extremely dense and unhealthy, I researched eight cities to figure out how healthy cities do, both in developing countries and developed countries. Then, I produced the toolkit combing toilets and public spaces, including toilet+square, and toilet+vertical greening. After that, I did spatial syntax to determine where to put new toilets.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu hvw

Based on preliminary investigation, I added 25 new toilets on the site and also designed the public space around them. To transform the disordered transportation system and make residents access toilets conveniently, I designed the corridor to connect most toilets, which has two levels and is also connected with northern marshes.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu izg

According to residents’ daily routines and basic needs, like playing sports, receiving education, and hanging up clothes, I design 9 node typologies.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu eaf

As the pottery industry is one leading industries in Dharavi, I combine toilets with pottery production. Also, the toilet can be combined with a stadium for young workers to do sports.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu irc

At last, I introduced a new type of toilet-Ecological toilet, which is a water-free toilet. Through aerobic degradation of microorganisms, human waste can be degraded into water and carbon dioxide. It neither wastes water resources nor requires sewage, which is a good fit for Dharavi.

Landscape Ladder

The project is located near the Troy Dam, and the goal is to create ecological connectivity across the Troy Dam in the Hudson River estuary. Migratory fish, such as American shad, river herring, American eel, and Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon, need access to both the ocean and freshwater habitat to complete their life cycles. By accessing both ocean and freshwater habitats during their life, migrating fish also serve an important role by connecting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. When barriers such as dams block their migration, these populations decline. Unfortunately, there are 1600 dams in the Hudson River Estuary.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu ec0

The mapping shows the relationship between the river, fish, and dams. The red plus are dams, and there are 1600 dams in the Hudson River Estuary, which affect fish migration primarily. Migratory fish, such as American shad, river herring, and American eel, need access to both the ocean and freshwater habitat to complete their life cycles. When barriers such as dams block their migration, these populations decline. There are two main types of fish, one is American shad and blueback herring. They live in the ocean but migrate to the Hudson River to spawn. The other one is the American eel, which is the opposite.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu h64

Then we zoom into the site. The west side of the Troy Dam is industrial land, and the rest is a residential area. The red hatch is my site, which is a brownfield and is restored right now. Now let’s look at the site issue. The water speed will increase downstream of the dam, resulting in fish habitat damage. Upstream of the dam, gravel, logs, and other essential food and habitat can become trapped behind the dam. Interestingly, the government builds a fish passage next to the dam, and it will be open between April 1 to November 30 of each year.

There are two types of artificial fish ladders for American eel and American shad respectively. The eel one is made of small cylinders, while the shad one is made of baffles. To decrease water flow, I create different topographies. The velocity simulation test of three different forms of the mound cluster is carried out by the grasshopper. The deceleration effect of different mound clusters on water speed is judged by recording the travel distance of particles within the same time. To conclude, the combination of the first one and the second one can decrease the water flow to the most significant extent.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu abe

Based on preliminary analysis, here comes the master plan. The first step is site selection, and the second step is creating two fish passes- upstream and downstream, and the upstream is divided into shad and eel. According to different fish ladders and migration patterns, islands are built to decrease water flow velocity. At last, walking trails are built to connect islands. The White arrow shows the proposed fish migration direction. I also designed scenic spots along the trail, including 7 waterfront platforms, 8 outdoor exhibitions, 9 riverside pavilions, and 10 terraced wetlands.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

After the design, topography, vegetation, and hydrology were altered, I cut 23 sections from north to south and chose three typical zones to show different passage typologies. The first one is a downstream passage. When fish migrate downstream, they are mature, so the size of the island increases accordingly. The second one is the eel upstream passage, the island is the smallest due to the tiny size of the American eel, and the shad one is much larger. Drawings on the right are detailed plans corresponding to three typologies. The white lines are contours generated from the rhino model, and the black numbers are contour values. We can see that from south to north, the elevation increases gradually to help fish migrate upstream. The different elevation of the trail also provides a diverse experience for visitors.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

In the early fall, dawn redwood would turn yellow and red, and American eels would migrate upstream to live. Not far away, you can see the dam’s power station.
Stepping stones increase shad migration viewing opportunities. In spring, shad would migrate upstream to spawn and trees would turn green. At the end of the trail, you will see the Troy Dam.

Tracing the Sound

The project is located in Wuhan China, and it is a team project. I was responsible for Concept, Master Plan, Prototype, and Rendering. The project is based on the background of the covid19 in 2020. Wuhan Huoshen Shan Hospital has witnessed the sacrifice of people across the country in the fight against the epidemic, which is of great commemorative significance. The Hospital is a temporary building that was demolished after the epidemic was completely over. After the demolition, we hope to transform the site into an anti-epidemic memorial park where people can commemorate reflect and receive science education.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu 7nk

So, we started to think about how to tell the story. Suddenly, sound popped into my head since according to scientific research, sound can evoke personal emotions and memories more than images. So, we abstracted various sounds in the epidemic, like ambulance, running, screaming, and crying, and converted them into the soundscape design in the park.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu h43

The logic behind the park is that we used topography, material, light, and space to create different sound experiences to evoke corresponding memories. Following the main tour route, from south to north, visitors will walk through weed rustle, metal rock, undercurrent panic, reflection pool, running spring, and cherry valley. The spatial sequence suggests different stages of COVID-19. The emotion went from restlessness, fear, and panic to quietness and reflection, and finally returned to peace and hopefulness.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu i91

There are two main types of prototypes. The first one is the sound-reduction belt planted with trees and shrubs on the west. The function is to eliminate road noise and offer recreational space for tourists. The second one is the central commemorative space, as we can see on the right. For example, number 1 is metal rock, when people step on metal fragments, it will generate the harsh sound of the metal collision.

1 Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

2 Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu

Then, we drew some renderings to show four important nodes. The first one is the entrance plaza, the wall at the entrance of the park is designed to place flowers for visitors to pay tribute to the past. Weed rustle is the prelude to entering the central commemorative space. The ramp is sinking slowly in the weeds. Visitors can only hear the wind blowing the grass and insects singing.

Overseas NO 126 Xiesiyuan Shu 0a4

When it comes to the reflection pool, life returns to normal, and people start to calm down. The names of the dead are engraved on the glass roof. When the sun shines, the names will be projected on the ground, encouraging the interaction between the living and the dead. Running spring is located at the end of the spatial sequence and heralds the epidemic’s end. The darkness before dawn and the light in the distance makes people full of hope.
