Why go abroad?
Curiosity.
Is there anything happened impressed you the most abroad?
There was a man in my father’s age at the office I interned in Copenhagen, who was from Boston. The Red Sox won the World Series championship that year, and that next day he wore a bright green T Shirt to work with “Boston Strong” on it. He knew I was studying there, so he even came to my desk to show me, proudly. Scandinavian people almost only wear monochrome color, not to mention architects. His childish excitement reminded me of the scene that my roommate in US and I haggling for the soccer teams in each’s home city.
So it is always the same. Nostalgia is the pertinacity that outsiders feel ridiculous.
What do you miss the most about China?
Local grocery market. If somebody loses hope for life, I would just stroll with him there, since that is the most lively place I can think of. Both vegetables and people are vigorous.People are peddling, bargaining around with cheesy pop songs as BGM. The vitality out of those chaos always makes me feel relax and moved, which is much more interesting than staggering in the grocery store in US which is always tidy and silent.
Will you come back? Why?
Yes. Mothership is calling.
Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?
I found it is really interesting to examine China from the eyes of people with different background. They would ask if we really eat dog or can we just “go” to Tibet without border. Some issues I can joke around since I believe I know it well, while others, which I am not very confident with as far as my knowledge, can still extend my thoughts.
I do waver sometimes. When the protest of cross-strait trade agreement took place I did start doubting. One of my roommates then happened to be Taiwanese. After a long throughout talk with her I realized something was built in my mind, something I assured of.
It is very hard to say it is more distinct to view China since things are so complicated. All I wish is I can hear more voices.
What are the educational characteristics of your school?
GSD has been introduced several times in this album. I was a little overwhelmed by the resources and opportunities there until I was capable to enjoy it. There is both agitation and devotion as you need.
Can you share with us some experiences and thoughts of your one-year gap year? Did it change you in someway?
Well, graduation means a lot. I knew it was irresistible but I was not ready at the time, neither psychologically nor objectively. That’s why I chose to do a gap year. And I knew it would be fun, too. Fortunately it is acceptable as an architect, to travel around the world while interning in the name of experiencing.
I have been in four cities during the year, Guangzhou, Copenhagen, Tokyo and Hangzhou. It sounds exciting but in fact I got lost in the end. I was frustrated of doing nothing special but ordinary interns. I would definitely try something besides architecture if I have a chance again. A good story tells much more then some tedious descriptions.
I did learn something though. From a 17-hectare urban planning project to interior rendering with pillows, from a big investment government project to strange clients and collaborators, by job-hopping I experienced so much.
You don’t need to concentrate on one specific project as an intern, but spend time watching something else happening in a design firm, something interesting to know yet always be neglected: the ways every firm structured and was managed; the differences of diverse media; how far each boss go with the design and how to become a qualified project manager. Sharp, direct and a certain degree of self-complacence, these characteristics mark the best chief designer off from other. I also understand more about myself after the participations.
Gap year reminds me the importance of relaxation. Life is wonderful yet every one of us were rushing ahead without know what we were chasing for. I finally had a chance to live my own life in the gap year, doing what I wanted to do, going where I wished to go.
Can you discuss the characteristics of the company you are working for?
Sasaki Associates is known for landscape design in China. It is actually very comprehensive with project scales range from urban planning to interior design. Correspondingly the composition of the office is very diverse. It is not managed in a traditional way which divides the team according to disciplines as the approach of enforcing multi-discipline corporation.
One of the most impressive thing is although it is a big firm with more than 200 staffs, it is very flat in term of management. A project meeting between intern and principal can be very common. Personal growth is also highly valued here. There are many resources and opportunities such as software tech group, public speaking training, digital fabrication shop tour etc.
Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?
The Japanese Wabi Sabi aesthetic really impressed me. It simplify things to the essence only, appreciate the beauty of imperfection, but still keep the vitality and poesy.
Another spirit of Wabi Sabi is the attribute of impermanent, which is the dimension of time in design. That is one of the reasons I was interested by landscape design since that is the topic rarely mentioned in architecture design.
What amazing character do your works have?
I have an obsession of starting with something interesting at least to myself, which I struggled with a lot, although it always ends up with hasty wrap up.
When did you start to follow gooood? Any suggestions?
I got to know Xiang Ling, the founder of gooood four years ago at the office I was interning. gooood was just her part time work. There was a moment of her I still remember. It was at a very boring meeting. Everybody was absent minded. I gazed around and noticed she was writing something seriously. g-o-o-o-o-d. She looked exhausted but confident.I can imagine the pressure on her must be huge since she had to deal with both the role of architect and website manager, but that moment made me believe she could make it. It is such a blooming of gooood now with the Community session, various albums etc. I am really happy for you.

Space Typology Study
Instructor: Christian Kerez
The ornamental space is an uncommon term whereas to start the design process, with the function quite usual. Ornament practice is on its returning to architecture design. The decorating attribute of architecture, which is neglected by modernism, is going back. However, it should be an evolution rather than negation of modernism or a flashback of iconic postmodernism.
This research of space typology is titled with “ornamental space”. The methodology is to approach the investigation of the architectonic space with the notion of the ornamental space, in terms of expressing the density and complexity of patterns and the ability to create infinite systems without clearly readable boundaries.
As one of the most typical structure type, vault displays high integration of spatial form and structure. While can this integration be enforced by some other valued spatial attributes in terms of ornament space, such as continuity or ambiguity, etc?

The LA river runs through Los Angeles from north to south, which used to be the main source of fresh water for the city. It now flows through a concrete channel on a fixed course, which was built after a series of devastating floods in the early 20th century. This reconstruction ruined the interface between the river and urban life. What makes it even worse is the river suffers pollution from agricultural and urban runoff for decades.
The LA river flood control is “freakology”. It is considered as a paradigm of urban degradation which used to be the icon while now decent to a channel hardly called as a river. The restoration and revitalization the river brings up the question how we adapt this freakology into nature in terms of cultural and social context.and how we integrate urban transformation and nature restoration.
The water volume of LA river is very polarized. The size of channel is designed according to the maximum flooding. Comparing the section of LA river and typical flooding channel, the efficiency of LA river is relatively low. The city is dry during most time of the year and the channel is almost empty, which is like a huge scar cracks the city into two.
Start from the river section, by keeping the total channel volume the same, part of the channel was shifted to the project site next to the river.. The branch channels are partly connected with ground level to introduce light and people access, which performs as public space during most time of the year. When the flood comes, they can still help drainage.

Interactive Shelter Design
Instructor: Xu Zhen
In a similar way, interaction design contains a number of aspects deeply rooted in the field of architecture, including a concern for our physical surroundings as well as a focus on supporting activities and the flow of people, information. When this two disciplines meet, a new and broad field of exploration is borned.
The subject is interactive design of an installation unit. Because of its transforming potential and constraints, quadrangle is chosen as the prototype. By a serie of geometrical manipulation, a transformation between horizontal canopy and vertical partition, which are two basic architectural definitions, is created

This project is about maximum effect with minimum means. Complex surfaces present a wide variety of construction and structural challenges. Among the most compelling examples of architectural geometry are those which use economical sheet materials with simple but versatile details to create maximum intensity.
Developability is crucial to architecture design and construction, since it means design can be realized by common panel material without flexibility. Curve folding is one of the developable types, behind which is very strong geometrical constraints.
