Among the street businesses of “old Beijing”, hutong haircut was full of fun and memory. Unlike today haircut almost can only be found in shop spaces, hutong haircut was used to be a part of familiar community life in “old Beijing”. Based on analyzing its old fashion and responding to the requirements of street haircut today, an installation containing necessary tools and appliances was proposed. With service from young stylists, we intended to represent hutong haircut in a new way.
“Hutong Reflection” is an installation able to be freely moved in small alleys. On both sides of the center cabinet, stacked mirrors were designed as foldable screens. These screens made the installation extendable and able to adopt its form to a specific site. The open screens helped define a “place” for outdoor haircut. They made this open air activity infectious to viewers and play like a live show in hutong. The almost extinct street haircut was thus reintroduced and able to be recognized in a positive manner.
“Hutong Reflection” is also an interactive street furniture. The arrangement of mirrors embedded in iron frames simulated the pattern of brick walls. The mirrors reflected surrounding pedestrians, residents, activities, environments, and even the viewer himself. All the images were cut to be fragmented pieces randomly and scatteredly presenting on various mirrors. This interesting appearance attracted people to take selfie and kids to play around. On the other hand, the specially displayed images were a metaphor for the fragile situation of the existing hutong environment. Viewers were invoked to associate with the present and the future of this old Beijing district.
