受深港城市\建筑双城双年展策展人王子耕先生的邀请，MARS星球建筑创始合伙人马宁先生为深双展的城市动物板块设计了一件以“刺猬法则”为主题的艺术装置。

At the invitation of Zigeng Wang, Curator Urbanism\Architecture Bi-City Biennale of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, Mr. Ma Ning, founding partner of MARS Studio, designed an art installation themed “Hedgehog’s Dilemma” for the urban animal section of the UABB.

心理学上有一个著名的实验：在冬天，两只刺猬为了生存，会相互取暖。可是如果它们靠得太近，彼此都会刺痛对方；离得太远，又会无法抵御严寒。直到它们寻找到了一个合适的距离，既不会被伤害，又能感到温暖，可以共同度过冬天。这就是著名的“刺猬法则”。

There stands a famous experiment in psychology realm: in winter season, two hedgehogs will keep each other warm in order to survive. However, if they became too physically close, spikes stung the other; too far away, and you won’t be able to withstand the cold. They adapt and struggle until they find the perfect distance, safe from harm, and warm enough to surpass the winter together. This is known as the Hedgehog’s Dilemma.

刺猬作为常见的城市动物，习惯藏匿于灌木丛深处，当刺猬深陷危险时会将身体蜷缩成一团，卷成如刺球状，浑身竖起棘刺，“刺猬法则”也正是因为他们的生理特性延伸而得。上下旋转的弧面构成了半开放的空间，形成刺猬常驻的“灌木丛”。两个不同高度的半球型弧面在交界处向内卷曲收缩，形成两个空间之外的第三空间。以此形成的空间足以容纳两只甚至三只刺猬共处而不会刺伤彼此。也暗示着社交空间一旦产生重叠，可通过第三空间制造社交距离。

Hedgehogs, as common urban specie, are used to dodging in the depths of discoverable bushes. When they sense any sign of danger, they will curl up into a ball shape and equip thorns all over for possible battles. The Hedgehog’s Dilemma derived from their unique and physiological characteristics. The curved surface, which rotates fluidly up and down, forms a semi-open space like the natural habitat of thickets where hedgehogs live. Two hemispherical arcs of different heights curl inward and contract at the junction, forming a third space outside the two spaces. This creates enough space for two or even three hedgehogs to live together harmoniously without stabbing each other. It also implies that once the social space overlaps, social distance can be created through this third space.

“刺猬法则”影射到人类主要是指人际交往中的“心理距离效应”：亲密的人际关系经常发生摩擦和矛盾，反倒不及初次交往容易。我们未尝不总是向最亲近的人展现出自己锋芒毕露的样子呢？或许，“刺猬法则”可以给人类一种解答。刺猬与刺猬，刺猬与人，人与人，人与自然，在生存的法则里都不乏时间和空间距离的保持，人与人的关系因“刺猬法则”可以得到改善，那么，人类与自然的和谐相处，是否也会因“刺猬法则”而得以实现？

The Hedgehog’s Dilemma alludes to the “psychological distance effect” in human social interactions: close relationships are often fraught with friction and conflict, which ironically not is not as easy as any first contact. Don’t we always demonstrate the pointiest side to those closest to us? Perhaps the Hedgehog’s Dilemma can provide a solution. Hedgehog to hedgehog, hedgehog to man, man to man, man to nature, there is no lack of time and space distance maintenance in the law of survival, the relationship between people can be improved because of the ” Hedgehog’s Dilemma “, then, will the harmony between human and nature be realized because of the ” Hedgehog’s Dilemma “?
