热爱陶艺与收藏的建筑师Vicky Thornton于2016年12月2-3日，参加了于英国伦敦伊斯灵顿NHS癌症医院Maggie’s中心所举办的义卖筹款活动。

2012年，仍处于乳腺癌化疗后遗症折磨中的Vicky Thornton开始了她的C杯系列，以手工制造的36个瓷器展现女性线条之美。而作为这个系列的延续， Thornton在过去的数年中，从世界各地的跳蚤市场或二手商店收集了72个瓷壶，并依据形态、色彩和设计将其分为了36组。略带相似却又并不一致的配对，象征着因患上乳腺癌而不得不进行切除手术的女性术后无法遮掩的心理与身体的伤痕。

Vicky Thornton is to hold a seasonal fundraiser for Maggie’s Centres entitled ‘Funny Shaped Jugs’ at Coexistence in Islington this December (2 – 3 December 2016).

In 2012, in the aftermath of chemotherapy for breast cancer Vicky Thornton, practising architect, potter and collector, embarked on the C-cup project, (big) C for cancer and the obvious bra size reference.

Thornton hand threw 36 C-cups in stoneware in three different shapes and colours, then paired each handmade piece in specially designed packaging. The different designs reflected the varying size and shape of breasts and the 36C cups made reference to the most common bra size. The cups were donated them to the Maggie Centre in Aberdeen for use by visitors and staff.

As a continuation of this, Thornton has now collected 36 pairs of ‘funny shaped jugs’ with the idea being it’s what you’re left with after breast cancer recovery.

Thornton comments, “Having paired the jugs to complement each other in terms of shape, colour or design – the similarity yet difference reflects the inevitable but often unappreciated a-symmetry of the post-operative world of breast cancer recovery. They have been collected over time, from local to far-flung places, French flea markets to antique warehouses in Brooklyn, most of them being vintage finds. Some are quirky, some almost biological, but all are carefully curated to sit as a subtle reminder of the legacy of breast cancer.”

The jugs will be on sale at Coexistence between 2 – 3 December 2016, and all proceeds from this enterprise will be donated to Maggie’s Centres, a haven for all in the cancer community. The ultimate concept is ‘Collection and Curation for cancer care’ – so a lot of big C’s!
