gooood team came to Liangma River in Beijing this summer and randomly interviewed some citizens and visitors at the waterfront space. They shared their experiences of enjoying and recreating on the waterfront, and by extension, their thoughts on how human and the natural environment can coexist. From the interviewees’ words, we can feel that people living in cities, especially water-scarce cities like Beijing, often have a love for “spaces with water” in urban environment, but are not satisfied, as they said: “There are still not enough such spaces. ” “There should be more waterfront spaces like this. Many of the interviewees came to the river from miles away just to be close to “nature”.

When being asked about how they usually use the waterfront space, some of the interviewees said they like to swim directly in the water, others like to walk along the water, read books and enjoy the riverside view, while others just like to sit and watch other people’s activities, but in general they have similar opinions on “the most important part of a waterfront space” — the feeling of being surrounded by water and greenery, and the fresher air than usual. We also found that some people do have an understanding of the waterfront environment around them, for example, some of them observed that the water quality of Liangma River is not as good as it used to be in the past two years, as there are more duckweed that can be found floating in the river.  In addition, due to the impact of lockdown and control, many interviewees said that they are “in desperate need of some space to breathe and relax.” They used to frequently escape from the city in their spare time, but now they can only come to sit by the river from time to time.

When it comes to the relationship between human and nature in the city, most of the interviewees expressed a positive attitude, believing that with careful planning and management, and the continuous development of technology, the city and nature can coexist harmoniously even with limited land and space. “People can’t live without nature, and nature needs people to maintain it.”“Without water and greenery, even the best working environment would be depressing.” “Only in nature can your heart be nourished, and only then is it not surviving, but living your life.”

  3. ONLYBIT

  6. sleepbear
