Appreciation towards XISUI Design for providing the following description:

Wuling Mountain, where the wild charm of nature and the unhurried ease of life intertwine. Eco-Logs Children’s Camp nestles within the embrace of this valley and woodland. Following the terrain’s undulations while accommodating children to roam free with exuberance, it is a place of play between the everyday and the wild.

Project Background|An Invitation to Play in the Deep Forest

In the forests of Wuling Mountain, clear and cool streams murmur as they flow. When wind passes through the woods, leaves rustle softly. The area already boasts well-established resort amenities such as private hot springs, fine dining, and forest hiking, yet these serve primarily adult guests. For families with children, there has always been a missing space where children can truly run free and release their nature.

Drawing on the site’s natural conditions, Aranya set a clear overall direction for Eco-Logs Children’s Camp: “pure nature, raw sensation.” Thus, within this forest clearing, we integrated the north-high-south-low slope, the poplar groves, and the naturally formed water channels into parts of the play experience.

Design Strategy|Spatial Layout That Follows the Terrain

Eco-Logs Children’s Camp is located beside the Second Canteen, along the future community’s main route into the central green space. The site originally featured a gentle slope lawn, a hawthorn grove, and naturally undulating terrain.

Yet as we delved deeper into the site, the spatial contradictions hidden beneath the valley’s natural appearance gradually surfaced. The existing elevation changes fragmented the meadow into disconnected patches with little relationship to one another; an immovable electrical facility interrupted the otherwise natural landscape. Beyond that, the entire site lacked layers for lingering, exploring, and activity.

Confronted with fragmented terrain and interrupted views, we chose to follow the existing elevation changes. Through layered reorganization and spatial arrangement, we unified the scattered site into seven sequentially unfolding daily experience zones.

Upon entering the Eco-Logs Children’s Camp, children are immediately greeted by the Nest Tower. Standing at the camp’s highest point, it serves as the visual anchor for the entire site, beckoning children to explore deeper into the camp.

Viewing the Nest Tower from afar © 银盐时代影像工作室

Eco Logs Childrens Camp on Wuling Mountain by XISUI Design

The Nest Tower is constructed from a spiraling structure of logs. Given their natural irregularity, we employed 3D parametric modeling to arrange each piece in continuous sequence, establishing a sense of order between nature and rationality with the rough-hewn wood. Sunlight filters through the gaps between logs, casting ever-shifting patterns of light and shadow along the structure.

Children crawl into the Nest Tower from its base, climbing upward rung by rung. As they ascend, the valley landscape gradually unfolds before their eyes.

Then, children slide down the tube slide, descending from the heights back to the ground. Both the Nest Tower tube slide and the platform roller slide were refined through parametric modeling, which simulated children’s sliding speed and landing trajectory at various slide angles. Through iterative verification, the design ensures the landing point comes to a stop exactly at the slide exit — neither overshooting nor falling short.

Coming down from the tower, a log zip line stretches alongside, tracing the undulating grassy slope. Children grip the handles tightly, gliding down from above with feet dangling in mid-air — sparking bursts of delighted shrieks along the way.

Sunlight filters through the foliage, casting dappled shade across the seating tiers — making it an especially pleasant spot to rest. This serves not only as a daily stop for parents and children to pause and supervise, but can also transform into a small outdoor event venue when needed.

Lawn Activities|A Sunlit Base Camp in the Valley

A broad, gently sloping lawn quietly unfolds at the entrance, where children can run freely. Along its edge, a shaded grove is deliberately preserved; canopy tents and existing native trees weave together into dappled shade, allowing parents to keep an eye on their children without standing in the blazing sun.

In the mountains, water always draws children most. Following the valley’s natural elevation change, we allow surface-collected rainwater to pass through ecological grass gullies and vegetative filtration before pooling in the water play pool. This serves both as a “natural container” for valley stormwater retention and as a safely approachable shallow water zone.

We leave the choice to the children, letting them decide how to relate to water. Children can start stepping onto a wooden waterwheel, driving the stream with the force of treading; or working together to press the water pump, observing the water flowing down along the wooden trough.

Deer Enclosure|A Life Classroom Shared Between Parent and Child

Through the final stretch of woodland lies the deer enclosure. Compared to the free-spirited play by the water and beneath the trees, the pace here slows — guiding children to encounter real, living beings. Log fencing encloses an accessible space. The rustic materials—log stakes and wire mesh—blend naturally with the distant mountain forests, dissolving any sense of “cage.” Here, parent-child nature education unfolds quietly within this immersive experience.

Drainage System|The Hidden Veins Growing Underground

Eco Logs Childrens Camp on Wuling Mountain by XISUI Design

The seemingly invisible drainage system that follows the natural lay of the land is, in fact, the result of careful iteration and layout during early functional zoning and terrain planning. To avoid disturbing this mountain landscape, we worked with the site’s natural north-high-south-low topography, abandoned conventional underground pipe networks, and integrated rainwater management into every functional zone from the very beginning of planning.

Rainwater follows multiple pathways across the site: natural surface runoff either filters layer by layer through grass-and-gravel dry creek and ecological grass gully before converging in the water play pool, or naturally infiltrates along the way, nourishing the soil. Guided along these multiple pathways, rainwater truly becomes a living, circulating landscape within the valley.

Throughout the eco-log children’s camp, we use environmentally friendly natural materials. The main structures are built from natural logs, a material selected through repeated testing. The log cabins at the entrance — which serve as the welcome point and restrooms — stand among the trees in unadorned simplicity.

At eco-log children’s camp, our restrained and quietly concealed design preserves this precious mountain wilderness. We hope this place is a playground where children’s spirits can run free, and a grounded little world where families can genuinely be together. In the sunlight, trees and grasses quietly bud and grow; children grow taller day by day; and parents rediscover a long-lost ease in companionship. In this valley, life and love both grow — gently, tenderly.
