Who is your favourite architect? Why?
I have a difficult time answering this question as my allegiances to various schools of thought are chronically evolving. What most impresses me is when an architect can effectively integrate design with intellect — a challenge many architects are called to but few can successfully execute. I look up to architect / theorists like Le Corbusier, Eisenman, and Bernard Tschumi. Recently I am also influenced by designers such as Amanda Levete, Peter Cook, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Herzog & de Meuron, and many film directors like Hitchcock and David Lynch.
What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?
Amongst academics, the school of architecture at Yale is distinctly known for its embrace of conflicting ideologies. Our faculty is a bit like the cast of a reality show — a conglomerate of unique brains who are thrust together to facilitate debate. Sometimes they also brawl.
The benefit of this system is that the student is free to pursue his or her own interests within the institution — the outcome is a crop of graduates with diverse design ideals who share a specific rigor of process.
What have you gained during the MAD internship?
My education and work experience thus far has been solely North American. I have rather enjoyed learning about the Chinese design and construction processes. It has also been enlightening to work with so many curves.
What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Any suggestions?
Though there are many beautiful and important buildings in China, I am most interested in the cities themselves. Beijing, in particular, fascinates me. Never before have I experienced a city with such immediately contrasting scales; one minute you are navigating the low, narrow maze of the hutongs, then suddenly you emerge in an expansive plaza spilling out from a towering, glass mega mall.
In the race to modernize, I fear that Beijing is abandoning many of the urban conventions that made the city successful in the first place, however. The ubiquity of multi-lane highways and megastructures has littered Beijing with urban dead zones. I would like to see more attention paid to the pedestrian impact of commercial developments and infrastructure. I would also like to see a Nolli-style map of the Dongcheng district.
What is your dream?
To learn Mandarin.
What would you do if you were not an architect?
I would write and direct films. This is what I studied and intended to do before I began architecture, and I still have a strong love for it.
What is your dream project?
Any sort of architecture / film mash-up. Perhaps to design and build a fantasy city and shoot a film within it like Jaques Tati did with Play Time. Or to design an android retirement community in dystopian Los Angeles a la Blade Runner.
What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?
Most of the projects I have completed at Yale are more like sketches — I’ve done lots of little three or four week projects that I am proud of but never had a chance to develop. I look forward to the intensive (and more personal) design work that will come with my final two studios in third year. That being said, I enjoy my ‘Archive’ project as it is the most rigorously developed project I have worked on yet.

Zaera.
ARCHIVE
FALL 2009
ARCH 1021a
CRITIC: MARK FOSTER GAGE
YALE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
PROGRAM: The Beinecke Rare Books Library is now full. Design an archive to house extremely rare, light and heat sensitive materials. Include gallery space and a large, secure reading room.
SOLUTION: Control light and circulation in the archive through a se-ries of customly louvered funnels. Hold the corner of Hillhouse and Trumble with a strong form to mark the entrance to the Yale Campus.

collaged corners
Spring 2010
ARCH 1022b
CRITIC: ED MITCHELL
YALE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
A careful analysis of Providence revealed a growing ring of density around the downtownriverfront. Our scheme emphasizes the corners of this zone by siting new development in thecurrently empty corner lots. On the southeast corner we developed a laboratory park, and on thesouthwest corner a mixed-use residential neighborhood with a waterfront park. In both cases weused the architecture to exaggerate the grain of the streets towards the river, thus maximizing theviews of the water and historic monuments around downtown Providence. Collaboration withAlexandra Tailer.

CANTILOOP
SPRING 2010
FURNITURE DESIGN & FABRICATION
CRITIC: PETER DE BRETTEVILLE
YALE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
The design of my chair began with the desire to form a frame out of a continuous loop. I had two additional intentions: to design a chair that appeared structurally precarious (but was not) and to design a chair that joined two different materials. The result is a slender frame with a cantilevered back and seat. The cantilever of the back provides a comfortable ‘springiness’ to the chair that allows you to adjust your sitting position. The final materials were wood and steel, however the design is meant to accommodate a range of seat materials.

BAM WEST
FALL 2008
ARCH 1011a
CRITIC: MARTIN COX
YALE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
PROGRAM: Using the shell of an existing building, design a large performance/exhibition space for the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Must include spaces for both dance performances and cinema.
SOLUTION: Encapsulate the brick building with a scrim-like exterior skin and design a theatrical procession through the building. The performance spaces will be informal and movable to inspire creative performance scenarios.

Cohab
SPRING 2009
ARCH 1012b
CRITIC: BIMAL MENDIS
YALE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
PROGRAM: In one week, design a space to be inhabited by two people independently. The site is located ten feet off the ground between four solid walls.
SOLUTION: Create a self-contained wall unit that could be deployed on multiple scales. Bedrooms cantilever into adjacent unit to create an unusual awareness of their neighbors.

REPLICATION
SPRING 2009
ARCH 1012b
CRITIC: BIMAL MENDIS
YALE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
PROGRAM: Using the tectonic of the cohab project, design a low income SRO for ten people.
SOLUTION: Using original ‘cohab’ form, transform original design into its inverse through a series of blends. The result is a diverse plan and section that allows for varying degrees of public/private spaces. The prominent ‘stoops’ become the primary zone of interaction amongst the residents.
