From curiosity and researching it make some question to:

How can I make something intangible become tangible?

Find ways of using shadow without the use of interactive design (technology). Look at types of design that relate to shadow such as Exhibition, Natural, Book, Photography and Website, then find the solution that has not yet been discovered. Look for something in daily life; how can people use or benefit from shadows in their daily lives? Create a scenario to help design for the user experience. Base the design on research gathered about the role of shadows in daily life. Create a functional product that can be used and is fully tangible.

To design a product with both form and function, which has been generated with reference to an image created by shadow. I will investigate the way in which the image of a shadow is formed, and then develop a real product based on the captured image.

I aim to make the viewer curious about nature and how the product becomes complete with the addition of shadow. The result will be an object that looks incomplete without shadow, but the shadow will form part of the product in a way that makes it complete and usable. To define the conclusion of my design, I will use information gained from research to analyse the objects, and create different types of products.

In addition, shadow has many meanings that can be both positive and negative. How can I incorporate this into the design’s function?

AIM

The aim of this project is to explore the meaning and implications of shadow in terms of how it can be used as an intangible entity and how it has changed with relation to our society. This question is in response to, and covers, all the elements of my research. To develop a process, whereby a product is created in the image of a shadow, but possesses a physical form and is functional. It should also bring to light our opinions and contrasting beliefs about what shadow represents. Philosophy

Shadow has the ability to prevent things from appearing flat or two-dimensional. It allows our eyes to calculate the third dimension. Also, it is seen connected to all things existing on this world, whether they are living or not. Shadow is what makes everything that exists on this planet complete.

It is clear that shadow possesses beauty even as an immaterial thing, its form ever changing according to the environment, but if a shadow could become a real thing, it would be an amazing tangible experience.

Definition for Project

The understanding of shadow is that it is caused by natural phenomena and acts as an indication of which things have a tangible existence on Earth. Shadows make these things complete. A visible object without a shadow, by logic, must either be an act of imagination or something that does not exist. This leads back to my project, which is to design and develop something that allows shadow to become a tangible object in daily life, with a useful function.

FINAL DESIGN

Prototype

The cutlery prototype was constructed from silver, which has a nice weight quality and feels cool against the skin in a way that is unique to silver. For the bowl and coaster prototype, acrylic was used and for the chair, I used MDF. Cutlery With the cutlery set, hidden implications were displayed through the separate shadow shape. The shadow was created as a tangible object with its own functional use. As the fork sits on top of the shadow shape, it appears to be lit from above by a single light source.

Spoon and fork

The spoon and fork exist as a pair, but the fork part is black in colour so that it blends in with the shadow. Since the shadow of the spoon is in the form of a fork, it indicates that they combine into one item and that the spoon is incomplete without the fork or vice versa.

Knive and fork

The same can be said for the knife and fork set. They also exist as a pair, and the fork is black in colour so as to merge with the shadow of the knife. Since the shadow of the knife takes the shape of a fork, it indicates that they act as one item and that the knife is incomplete without the fork or vice versa.

Chopstick

The chopstick solution appears as one thin bar, but there is also a camouflaged one below it. For this piece, the ‘shadow’ chopstick can be placed beneath any standard chopstick to appear as its shadow. I think this technique could be adapted to suit a wider range of applications, keeping the light angle and brightness the same but replacing the chopsticks with other items. Tableware The physical representation of shadow could also be used to protect a tabletop from heat damage. By doing this, the shadow becomes a tangible object with the function of preventing damage.

Bowl with shadow plate

To outline this concept, the bowl is used to hold soup and is placed onto the dark plate to protect the table from spillages or heat damage. The plate underneath the bowl becomes the bowl’s shadow. The angle and intensity of the imaginary light source can be replicated with other objects instead of bowls

Coffee coaster

This design includes a coffee coaster in the shape of a shadow projected onto the tabletop. The intention is that the coaster copies the exact silhouette of the cup, with a similar light source to the cutlery sets. The handle part that can be seen protruding from the shadow is actually the end of a black teaspoon secretly embedded into the coaster. Furniture I tried applying a similar technique to a chair object, and after experimenting with the light source’s position and angle, it occurred to me that the shadow could transform into a table. The chair is a typically functioning stool. However, the side table can fold down to become a shadow embedded into a ground-level plane. When the shadow is in its upright side-table form, the far edge must be supported by the wall, and this would be calculated by an architect or interior designer.
