“Ephemeral Eternity” is a series of images created by architectural photographer Tianzhou Yang, aimed at exploring the fluid boundaries of architecture. This diverse collection includes renowned masterpieces, ordinary residences, and abandoned structures that often go unnoticed. The photographer captures moments where these varied buildings intersect with the symbolic horizon of eternity, illustrating how the convergence of time, space, and memory at specific moments transforms human-made structures into architecture. This series reveals the dynamic and blurred boundaries of architecture, encouraging viewers to contemplate its true essence.

What is architecture? For centuries, people have sought to define architecture precisely, yet a definitive answer remains elusive. Rather than lengthy and complex definitions, I prefer the following succinct and poetic expression: architecture is the horizon where the earth and sky converge. It is distant and indistinct, beyond reach, yet it offers hope and solace. When we gaze into the distance, the horizon seems to evoke an ancient human memory where time and space intertwine, revealing eternal secrets.

Ephemeral Eternity

The essence of architecture lies in the pursuit of eternity, whether in material, spirit, or memory. European cathedrals, built of stone, withstand the elements and stand tall for millennia; Japan’s Ise Shrine is repeatedly dismantled and rebuilt in a ceaseless cycle; Chinese gardens and pavilions are recorded in extensive literary works, passed down through the ages. Yet, whether material, spiritual, or memory, all eventually fade. Eternity, like the horizon, seems within reach but remains elusive. Each piece of architecture is a small marker created by humanity in this pursuit, reminiscent of the myth of Kuafu chasing the sun.

Ephemeral Eternity

However, the pursuit of eternity in architecture is not reflected in every moment. The timelessness of a stone cathedral is realised in the moments when humans gaze upon it through slices of time. The eternity of the Ise Shrine is embodied in its process of dismantling and rebuilding. The timelessness of architecture recorded in words is found in the moments of reading. This suggests that architecture can only be considered as such in the context of its relationship with eternity, and this timeframe might not coincide with its construction or use but could be in its design, building, or abandonment as ruins. A complete Acropolis might pale in comparison to its current ruins, and the finished Sagrada Familia may not inspire as much awe as it does during its century-long construction period.

Ephemeral Eternity

Thus, the boundaries of architecture are fluid. Even the most renowned buildings are only truly architectural at certain times, while the most ordinary structures can have their extraordinary moments. The abandoned frames on the plains, the obscure water towers in deserts, the secluded houses in mountains and by the sea, may at some moment approach eternity, marking humanity’s journey towards the distant horizon with small yet infinitely potent symbols. My endeavour is to capture these small yet great historical moments.
