The BIGGER Art Book Fair is a platform for the exchange of art publications, bringing together bookstores, publishers, artists, illustrators, designers, and other creators. Founded in 2021 by Sendpoints, which focuses on global art publishing and distribution, BIGGER is guided by the concept of “Thinking is bigger than a book.” Each edition revolves around a specific theme to explore the evolution and development of art publications in contemporary times, aiming to explore the possibilities of future publishing through different themes.

The third BIGGER Art Book Fair takes the theme of “Stop and Shake Hands,” featuring 154 national participating brands and 15 overseas participating brands. Two major themed exhibitions, titled “The Voicers” and “Dialogue,” are also presented. The book fair aims to encourage people to practice the ability to browse and connect creators from different cities and fields through art books as a medium. As an ecosystem and a medium, the art book fair encourages everyone to reconnect with physical media and experience a more authentic world through the theme of “Stop and Shake Hands.” For this art book fair, Studio Daixin Jizi took charge of the exhibition space design and collaborated with young artist Yin Hui to create a large-scale spatial art installation called “Link City,” specifically for the themed exhibition “The Voicers,” combining spatial design and artistic expression.

“Link” represents the connection implied in English, echoing the theme of this year’s art book fair, “Stop and Shake Hands,” advocating and encouraging genuine and courageous communication between people. As a fast-paced exhibition that only lasts for five days, finding a design method that can respond to the theme while meeting the organizer’s requirements for its “iconic” and functional book display was a challenging task. Additionally, the issue of how to address the relationship with the central cross-shaped pillar in the exhibition hall needed to be resolved. The design process for this exhibition was a fascinating exploration, and our collaboration with young artist Yin Hui broadened our design thinking. The final result remained consistent with our vision, and we would like to express our gratitude to curator Nicole’s team for their trust, encouragement, and support.

Our thought process began with “Stop and Shake Hands,” focusing on the space itself. We aimed to create an experience that allows people to pause and cultivate a pleasant atmosphere. From a material perspective, we considered returning to simplicity, focusing on everyday life. We also needed to consider the connectivity of the materials themselves and ensure their physical properties were solid enough to build sturdy and tall installations. Furthermore, the materials needed to have the potential to evolve into public furniture for future use, be affordable, and possess conditions for sustainable recycling. After comprehensive consideration, the material options were limited. Ultimately, scaffolding and water pipes were chosen. However, scaffolding lacked a “mature connectivity” that could decipher the theme and establish consistent value. Therefore, we selected colored water pipes and everyday items as materials. Water pipes have multiple advantages: they can support the framework, are sturdy, come in various colors and sizes, are easy to cut, and can be shaped in various ways. The final presentation achieved satisfactory results.

Water pipes are hidden within cities, effectively connecting and supporting everyone’s lives. A city built with water pipes represents the realistic and robust aspect of our lives. Hugo once said in “Les Misérables,” “The sewer is the conscience of the city.” Many naturally assume that a city is born with a complete water supply system, which is used by residents living in the city every day, yet they rarely truly interact with it. As one aspect of this “conscience” system, water pipes transport the most common and precious resource – water. On the surface, our cities appear sturdy and independent, but in another dimension, water pipes connect all of us.

The use of colored water pipes breaks the hidden nature of this material and creates a colorful and warm sensation. While capturing people’s attention at first glance, we hope it also inspires contemplation about the overlooked possibilities of the things we possess. Pink water pipes provide support for the bookshelves, orange water pipes construct vertical structures, and yellow car wash grates cover the tabletop. All connecting components are highlighted in fluorescent green, which was manually spray-painted. Pink, orange, green, and yellow together create this temporary instant city.

The music of “Link City” is a symphony performed jointly by colored water pipes and 300 carefully selected art books. The curation of “The Voicers,” the content of the themed exhibition, explores art through art publications as a medium. These books are like different pieces of music, producing sounds not only from reading but also from the “resonance” created by the water pipe display stands. In this themed exhibition, the BIGGER curators spent a week listening to the stories between books, including content, color, size, binding, and typography design, ultimately selecting over 300 art books. Transparent water pipes carrying colored fur balls flow within the connections between the water pipes, infusing inspiration throughout “Link City.”

Through modular design, the installation incorporates ready-made products into the city built with water pipes. It combines visual and tactile elements, complemented by uniqueness and irreplaceability derived from craftsmanship and information exchange between materials and people. This connection conveyed through the texture of physical objects becomes a social and interactive connection between individuals.

The selection of everyday items mainly stems from Yin Hui’s creative philosophy. She excels at exploring the possibilities of stubborn daily materials, believing that combining images with manual work and materials can stimulate unlimited imagination and creativity. The combination of everyday items and installations creates a peculiar effect, producing a familiar yet unfamiliar visual and tactile experience. Through the intertwining of touch and vision, distinct from the texture produced by digital production, it stimulates the audience to perceive with a more genuine bodily sensation, confirming their existence.
