“La Corrente”  2010
Marble, glass smalti, 24k gold smalti, chalcedony and sea shells on mixed media base
29” x 23” x 23”

My work utilizes the innate opulence of mosaic materials – 24k gold smalti, marble, semi-precious stones – to embellish sculptural forms in unexpected ways.  The discovery of dentalia shells inspired the densly-packed and fragile under skirt.  La Corrente, (The Current in Italian) is about beauty amidst destruction.  The sea kelp adorning her gown swirls in the strong gulf currents.  Rich in nutrients, the Giant Asian Sea Kelp is an invasive species threatening the balance of plant and marine life in the Gulf of Mexico.   While man overtly destroys the gulf with oil, pollution, and fertilizer runoff, another destructive force creeps in with the current.La Corrente was created as a commission for a very dear friend.  As we were planning and designing the form of the sculpture, the world was watching with great concern as the Gulf of Mexico was being contaminated with oil from the BP spill.  My client is a regular visitor to the Gulf coast and likes to fish and vacation on the shore, so the coincidence was ironic and painful.  The dress form and the pale colors of white and cream .

La Corrente

Night Shirt, 2008  32.5″ x 21″ x 2.5″

In the earlier work Night Shirt, a two-dimensional wall relief sculpture, I wished to capture a particularly magical moment during a visit to San Francisco, California.  Late one evening, some friends and I took a drive to view the city from a park across the bay.  Although a city as large and densely populated as San Francisco is never quiet, from our perspective across the bay it was serene.  I  captured this unforgettable moment in my work.

I have worked as a mosaic artist for more than 20 years, primarily making residential projects for kitchens, baths and other living spaces.  My fine art sculpture mosaics allow me to create works of art that  speak about the issues about which I’m concerned, such as the environment and economic inequality.  But I also really enjoy the tactile nature of mosaic making: cutting and hand-placing each tessera, blending colors and creating texture through careful placement.

32.5″ x 21″ x 2.5
