MAD no doubt is one of the most recognized architectural practices in China and worldwide. Every year,
MAD receives countless job and internship applications. To be able to work at MAD will definitely enrichyour career as even though the people working here might have been lucky, but are undeniably outstanding. What could possibly be on the minds of the MAD interns?

MAD无疑是中国最受瞩目的建筑师事务所,同时在世界范围内也受到极高的关注。MAD每年都收到来自全世界不计其数的工作申请和实习申请。能够进入MAD学习和工作一段时间,职业生涯无疑会变得精彩丰富,在这里的人们,也许是幸运的,但肯定是优秀的。那些还没迈出学校门槛,在MAD工作的实习生们,他们脑子里天马星空的想法是什么样的

Who is your favourite architect? Why?

I used to like Mies Van Der Rohe a lot; his designs are super clean and simple, and push liner architecture to an extreme. Now many architects are great, such as Zaha and BIG. Zaha transforms people’s understanding about the image of architecture. Now her designs use a more refined language, super cool. In China, I think Ma is one of the best architects. Designing a non-liner, simple shape building does not need ideas only, but also technology, what’s more, courage and opportunity.

What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?

My school has a high reputation doing transport architecture, but really old-fashioned. I’m the first one in my school try to use maya. Our school encourage creativity, however, we suffered lots of restrictions given by teachers. Last year, Mr. Deng, my teacher of skyscraper designing principles, failed more that 20 students and then just left school! Thankfully I passed this year or I would not receive my degree.(Laugh)

What have you gained during the MAD internship?

Lots of friends. MAD surprises my in many different ways, much better that I imagine, very happy and very entertaining.

What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Anysuggestion?

China develops so fast and inevitably missing some of its own character, and sacrifice environment and history in return. Most western people acknowledge that Japan originally adopted things from China in the past, but now they think Japan, especially culture, is much better than China, even India preserved their traditions much better than China in a high-speed development. I think we should start form education, students in school should go out and travel more, don’t stick with Kahn and Corbusier all the time, they were good, but out of date. Architects should have seen more. I believe some buildings have eternal value, such as religious buildings.

What is your dream?

Travel around the world and photographing the world. I hope I can go fish everyday in the sea 20 years later.

What would you do if you were not an architect?

I would like to be a photographer, try to discover beauty in life from another perspective and encourages you to see more. And I can photo lots of gorgeous girls! (Laugh)

What is your dream project?

The first super-skyscraper in Tibet.

What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?

None, but I like many concepts in it.

最喜欢的建筑师是谁?为什么?
以前很喜欢密斯(Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe ),他的建筑很干净,将直线建筑做到了极致。现在都还好,有zaha hadid,big。Zaha从形态上,改变了人们对建筑的理解。语言经过了更高的提炼,超酷。在中国,论国际影响力,认为马岩松是最好的建筑师之一。做曲线,简单形状的建筑,不光需要idea,技术,更需要有勇气和机遇。

你所在学校的教育特点?
我的学校做交通建筑很有历史,但是很古板。我是学校里第一个尝试用MAYA做设计的人。学校鼓励创新,但是老师对学生的限制很多。去年有个教高程的小邓老师,让一个班挂了20多个人,结果又跳槽了。幸亏我今年过了,不然就拿不到学位了。(笑)

MAD实习最大的收获是什么?
找到了这么多的朋友,来MAD后,MAD给了自己很多的惊喜,感觉很欢乐,很娱乐。

对中国建筑有什么感触?你的建议是什么?
发展速度太快,已经失去一些自己的血脉,而且现在都以牺牲环境和历史为代价。西方人都知道日本的东西都是中国传过去的,但是西方人都认为日本的东西,特别是文化,都比中国好。即使是高速发展的印度,也保留得比中国好。我认为应该从教育抓起。对在校学生的建议:“努力学习,好好锻炼身体,多出去走走,不要一进校就抱着康,柯布的理论看,这些很好,但已经过时了。建筑师应该多看。”相信有一些建筑是永恒的,比如宗教建筑。

你的梦想是什么?
环游世界,拍遍世界。20年后,天天出海钓鱼。

你如果不当建筑师会选择什么职业?
不做建筑我就会做摄影,摄影就是换一个角度发现生活中的细节。鼓励你看更多的东西。摄影还可以拍很多的“美女”(笑)。

你梦想中的项目是什么样的?
在西藏做第一个超高层建筑。

在自己的作品集中,你最喜欢的作品是什么?为什么?
没有,很多概念都很喜欢。

A City is Not a Tree

The system of a tree is the easiest way of referring to a complex structure, however, whencomparing our city to a tree, we sacrifice the human complexity and richness for meaninglessconceptual simplicity. Each unit in a tree is fixed, with unchanging relationship with others, but ina human society, the mixed connection between each person is never fixed, we are living in aever-changing environment marching faster and faster toward a much more complex socialconnection. Architectural space should also adapt to this kind of complex structure.

Aiming for a organic city mode, how to keep this kind of dynamic complexity is the key to ourdesign, we created multiple level of circulation and connection between skyscrapers. Buildingand spaces are not simply a division system that construct according certain hierarchy, however,they should be a semi-lattice structure with overlapping spaces and fluid circulation. Future citiesis all about connection and communication, same for architectural spaces.

城市不是树

树枝系统是指代复杂结构的最简单模型,但是当我们把树枝系统和城市结构比较的时候,往往忽略了人的复杂性和多样性,而使这样一个经典模型毫无意义。树枝之间简单的分支关系是固定的,然而在人类社会中,即使是人与人之间最微小的联系也没有固定的,我们生活在一个节奏越来越快的复杂社会中,建筑结构也应该适应这种新型的动态的,复杂的关系。

从有机城市的角度出发,保持这种动态的复杂性是本次设计的关键。设计采用了多层交织的流线系统以及高层之间的连接,融合。空间不再是简单的根据功能等级来固定分配的,而是一种半网格状的相互融合交织的结构,具有连续性及流动性。未来的城市一切都是为了更方便的联系和交流,建筑空间也应如此。

Talking about Chengdu, the first thing comes to mind is the leisurely life style, and those relaxentertainment seen everywhere along streets, affable tea houses, dancing in open spaces andhomonymous neighborhood.

Someone once said about Chengdu, the most suitable space molecule for Chengdu is the scale ofa Majiang ( a popular local entertainment) table, there will be people where there is place for aMajiang table. Such humorous saying reflects the true characters in every Chengduer’s blood,affable, optimistic, positive and passion for life.

When the problem comes to design the one of main ‘entrances’ into Chengdu, what does the citywants? Chengdu need an open, leisure, liberate and free space. Only this kind of space can growinto the life of Chengdu city, and only this kind of space can survive and make surroundings alive.

说起成都,最先想到的是这个城市悠闲的生活方式,以及大街上随处可见的娱乐:茶馆,街头舞蹈,以及和谐的邻里关系。有人说过最适合成都的尺度就是一张麻将桌的宽度,在这里,只要能摆得下麻将桌的地方,就有生活。这样幽默表达的方式映射出了成都人骨子里和蔼,包容,乐观和积极向上的生活态度。

当我们在设计这样一个通向成都的“大门”的时候,同样也在问自己,这个城市需要什么?成都的生活方式告诉我们,成都需要开放,休闲,自由的空间。只有这样的空间在能融入这样的城市,生长其中,并充满生机。

City Patch

Two years have passed since the 5.12 earthquake struck our land, but shadows of the tragedy willalways be there. Especially present in the lethal damage to the city’s infrastructure and diversity.What concerns us now is how to recover the city’s prosperity and social diversity. By researchinginto to the current conditions of temporary houses in these areas, along with the national policy,we discovered a way to re-establish the city’s diversity by re-using the materials of the temporaryhouses; the steel plates can be converted into many other uses, and they are so easy to handle,even the locals can build what they really need by themselves. While having the first earthquakeanniversary, we hope to celebrate, in a special way, the rebirth of the city.

5.12汶川大地震距现在已经有两年之久了,但是地震所带来的伤痛和阴影却挥之不去,特别是对城市基础设施毁灭性的破坏,曾经生机勃勃的城市瞬间失去活力,数百万人无家可归。灾后重建的重点都放在了灾民的安置问题上,却忽视了城市基础设施和多样性的破坏。因此,如何重构震后城市的多样性,恢复城市的活力成为了我们这次关注的课题。

经过试实地调研,我们发现地震灾区的板房区拆除后将剩余大量板材,但是通过我们对板材的建构研究发现,只要稍加利用,这样的板材在城市重建中可以发挥多方面的用途,可利用其构筑城市基础设施来弥补城市的多样性和社会功能,由于板材的易搭建性,居民甚至可以自己动手参与家园的重建。结合国家灾后重建的宏观政策,我们希望在重建的过程中能达到板房区密度降低和城市多样性恢复之间的平衡。而只有这样才能保持平滑顺利地完成重建。正值汶川地震一周年纪念日,我们希望用这种特殊方式庆祝城市的重生。

Heterotopia

Heterotopia is a concept elaborated on by philosopher Michel Foucault to describing places and spaces that function in non-hegemonic conditions. These are spaces of ‘otherness,’ which are neither here nor there, that are simultaneously physical and mental, such as the space of a phone call or the moment when you see yourself in the mirror. A utopia is an idea or an image that is not real but represents a perfected version of society, such as Thomas More’s book or Le Corbusier’s drawings. Foucault uses the term heterotopia to describe spaces that have more layers of meaning or relationships to other places than immediately meet the eye. In general, a heterotopia is a physical representation or approximation of a utopia (like the city of Brasilia), or a parallel space that contains undesirable bodies to make a real utopian space possible (like a prison), where not only cultural events get mixed up here, but time, reality, imagination get mixed at the same time. It carries people’s memory, knowledge, feelings and dreams.

异托邦是最先由法国哲学家米歇尔福轲提出来的概念。存在有这样一种另外的空间,不属于任何一个世界,却又同时是物质的和精神的,如果在一通电话里存在的空间或者是你在镜子里看见自己的时候。乌托邦正如莫尔书中和科布西耶的画里描绘的一样,是一个虚拟的完美世界。福轲的异托邦描述的是拥有多重属性的空间,但这种特质没有被直接的物质空间表现出来。总而言之,异托邦是乌托邦物理属性的表达,或者是让乌托邦可能变为真实的一个平行世界。在那里,不但文化事件混合在一起,时间,现实,幻想同时也融合,承载了人们的记忆,认知,情感和梦想。
