War is one of the most intensive and far-reaching human activities that cause ecological change and transform urban regions. Laos is per capita, the most bombed country on the planet, with 0.84 tons of explosives dropped per person from the years 1964 to 1973. With about 80 million leftover UXO (unexploded ordnance) remain scattered throughout Laos, populations living around the UXO embedded site are under serious threat. The effects UXO has on food production, infrastructure development, water and sanitation, school and hospital extensions, etc. are profound.

With Harvard GSD Penny White Projects Fund, I visited Laos in January 2012. I took infrared pictures along the Mekong River to document the landscape in Laos, which was violently disturbed during the Vietnam War and has long-term effect after the war.

‘…Infrared film is originally developed for camouflage detection. This aerial reconnaissance film registers an invisible spectrum of infrared light, rendering the green landscape in vivid hues of lavender, crimson, and hot pink… The infrared film can be used to document the line between the living and the dead in the landscape, as living vegetation when exposed on this film appears in blood-like shades of burgundy, pink, and violet, and artificial materials…fall flat, appearing nearly black & white like blurs and specters in the terrain.’
