Appreciation towards Raw Edges Design Studio for providing the following description:

This year again, 5VIE district shows its cultural interest by setting up the new research exhibition about new contemporary designers. The exhibition by Federica Sala will give a preview of Raw Edges: Herringbones project.

In 2014 the district hosted “Baas is in town!”, a monographic exhibition about Maarten Baas desecrating irony and productive machine, while last year Federica Sala presented the British sculptor and designer Max Lamb with “Exercises in seating”, by giving special importance to the concept of the current homo faber.

The 2016 edition will welcome the Israeli duo Raw Edges, whose studio is located in London.

The designers Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, the Raw Edges, entered the world of contemporary design thanks to their innate skill to turn perspectives around. Clear examples of it are the Up Side Down library for Lema, Lake, the lenticular rugs collection for Golran, or the Stack chest of drawers for Established & Sons.

Their aesthetics, characterized by the use of color, focuses on the concept of movement and on the study of patterns.
Inspired by the works of Yaacov Agam and Victor Vaserely, the authors are particularly skilled at transporting to a three-dimensional object the same perspective change given by a movement illusion. To obtain this effect, their manual approach is fundamental. They creates paper scale model and small sets in order to study objects and the perception of them from different points of view. Moreover, their works are characterized by a special approach on matter experimentation: foam, felt, wood, jesmonite and, today, plastdip.

“What impresses me about Herringbones is the concept of perpetual pattern, recurring pattern, pattern of patterns, that is what covers the surrounding world, no matter if in a planned or casual way, by transforming it in another world, combining any possible shape or pattern. It is like a mathematical analysis on the interaction variables between lines and curves.” Federica Sala says.

As a matter of facts, Harringbones is the umpteenth evolution of parquet floors, before for Established & Sons’, and then for Stella Mc Cartney’s shops, which then became the Endgrain project: the designers manage to completely paint wood pieces by cooking them into inks, in order to successively assembly them and sculpt them, as desired.

At present, “Herringbones” passes from interiors to exteriors, thanks to a new matter experimentation, with plastdip, and thanks to a new technique of liquid immersion.
The Spazio Sanremo space will be transformed into a big workshop, animated by the designers like a perpetual performance. The first things to be designed are the production tools, so that they can produce unending examples of pattern applications both on objects with peculiar shapes and on objects appositely designed by the artists.
