Appreciation towards Splace for providing the following description:
Cityvoice has been projected and realized by Splace on the occasion of the opening of Sala Dogana, a new space dedicated to young artists’ ideas.
The installation aims to introduce the public to a new exposition area, a space where art presents itself to the city or, in other words, the city speaks to itself through art. Metaphorically the “city’s voice” materializes through the sounds, which everyday fill up and make alive Genoese streets.
Tens of sound recordings have been selected, collected and reproduced: natural sounds – as those of the wind and the sea – the noise of road traffic, that of the marketplace and the animated conversations within a bar have been recorded in order to create not only a sound system, but also an aesthetic one.
Thus the playback system becomes an instrument of spatial configuration.Out of the exposition area, the sound recordings are mixed together in a colored and noisy skein of cables and loudspeakers, while inside, the same cables run through the room, occasionally bounce against the walls and trace new and unexpected trajectories. At the end of the tour a multitude of headphones enable people to listen to the soundtracks.
The city invades and conquers the Sala Dogana, not only through the sounds, but also through people. Their curiosity about the cables tangled out of the exposition area drives them within it. Cityvoice is a noisy “Ariadne’s thread” that seduces and captures those who are going through a central square , leading them to explore a new and mysterious place.
Splace has been founded in 2009 by five young architects from Genoa, connected by common working, didactic and research experiences. The design team represents the result of previous collaborations, after sharing a formative path. The idea is to develop, theoretically and especially by designing, some of the most current architectural topics: the relationship with mass media, the issues about public spaces use and transformations, the temporary reuse of abandoned uildings, the connections with other arts.
Splace is an informal, flexible and open organization, where different and complementaryinterests and skills mix up: urban sustainability, digital tools and languages for architectural analysis and design, photographic investigation, historical and aesthetical issues.Splace works on graphics, photography, exhibition, urban happenings and installations, architectural competitions.
In 2009 the team took part at “In/comunicazione”, an interdisciplinary workshop-exposition for emerging artists; the exhibition has been set up by Splace in Scalinata Borghese. During 2009 and 2010 the team designed and realized different temporary installations for the public spaces of
Genoa: “Chairs for all” and “Light up the space”. In 2010 Splace was selected for the Festival des Architectures Vives in Montpellier, with the project “Truthehole” (special mention from the jury), and for the final phase of “Concours de projets pour l’animation artistique du collège de Gambach” a Friburgo (CH), tank to the project “300”. In November 2010 for the inauguration of Sala Dogana, a new exhibition area in Palazzo Ducale, Splace realized the sonorous installation CityVoice.
