CHINEASY – THE BRAND NEW TEACHING METHOD FOR LEARNING CHINESE

Chineasy is a brand new teaching method for learning Chinese. Founded by Taiwanese born entrepreneur ShaoLan Hsueh, Chineasy allows anyone to be a ‘student’ of the Chinese language by simply recognising and remembering illustrated Chinese characters. The Chinese language contains over 20,000 characters and is seen by the western world as one of the most difficult languages to learn, yet there are over 1.3 billion Chinese speaking people worldwide, equating to 37% of the population.

Learning the Chinese language is the first step to understanding the culture as a whole. For ShaoLan the agenda of Chineasy is social as well as educational:

“The real agenda behind the project is to bridge the gap between the East and the West. I want to give the West a real understand and knowledge so that people can understand China and appreciate Chinese culture via their own eyes rather than layers of packaging, manipulation or loss in translation.” ShaoLan Hsueh

Chineasy is set to become the first step for anyone in the world who wants to understand China, Chinese culture and its language. “I am demonstrating the beauty of this deep and broad culture with a modern interpretation by creating sleek modern design” Hsueh continues.

The daughter of a calligrapher and ceramists ShaoLan has fused her artistic upbringing and knowledge of computer software to form Chineasy. Struggling to teach her own British born children how to read Chinese, she developed her own software which took the characters in the language and found common “building blocks”. Since then with a small team of designers she has created a series of visually striking illustrations to explain each character which in turn provide a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural influences behind the vocabulary.

In February 2013 ShaoLan presented at the TED conference in California on Chineasy, her talk has since received over a million views on the TED website and Youtube. Chineasy’s Facebook following has grown to over 20,000 likes and currently over 900 people have backed the campaign to fund a Chineasy book on Kickstarter. Chineasy have also received pleas and invitations to develop the project to other languages including Japanese and Arabic. The popularity of this language learning method can only to continue to grow.

China is home to ancient traditions, breath taking artwork, and what is currently one of the world’s strongest economies. Everyone is starting to pay more attention to China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries as they become increasingly popular as tourist destinations and increasingly important as cultural and financial hubs. Chineasy’s goal is to allow people to learn to read Chinese easily by recognising characters through simple illustrations. The magical power of the Chineasy method is that by learning one small set of building blocks students can build many new words, characters, and phrases. With very little effort, learners will be able to read several hundred Chinese characters and phrases and gain a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural influences behind the vocabulary. Even though there are tens of thousands of Chinese characters, only a few hundred are actually necessary to comprehend basic Chinese literature and begin to delve into Chinese culture and art.

About ShaoLan

After taking a sabbatical from being a venture capital investor in London, ShaoLan is now focused on a social project, Chineasy. ShaoLan’s ultimate aim is to bring down the great wall of Chinese language and allow Eastern and Western cultures to communicate freely.
Born in Taipei and now living in London, ShaoLan is an entrepreneur, geek, writer, traveller and dreamer. She has had several dramatic career changes in the past and, while studying for an MBA, wrote four best-selling books on software, awarded “book of the year” in Taiwan. In her second semester she co-founded her first venture, pAsia Inc. Under ShaoLan’s leadership, pAsia became a major player in the Internet sector in the Greater China area in the late 1990’s. After moving to London, she began investing in and advising young technology companies through Caravel Capital, which she founded in 2005 whilst studying at the University of Cambridge. She has also been a director of five UK-based technology companies.ShaoLan is a member of several management and advisory boards for non-profit organisations in the UK, including the Saïd Business School of Oxford University, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Asia House, and the New School Network, an organisation backed by the British Government promoting educational reform.
