Appreciation towards OEO Studio for providing the following description:
Copenhagen based OEO Studio has just completed work on several spaces within the Designmuseum Denmark, including the design of a new café and museum shop. OEO Studio’s work forms part of the first major redesign of the museum since that undertaken by iconic Danish designer Kaare Klint in the 1920s. OEO Studio has designed innovative new elements that interpret Kaare Klint’s spirit and engage in the best possible way with the original architecture of the building and its choice of materials. The result is a series of cohesive areas that build upon on and unite the original ideas behind the museum, paying tribute to the strong Danish tradition of fine craftsmanship and quality.

The café and the adjacent lounge areas form a 240 m2 all day dining venue on the ground floor of the museum. The central design detail of the space is a monolithic 6-metre-long bespoke counter, that is more architectural in appearance than a classic bar counter. The proportions and detailing of the counter are based on Kaare Klint’s simple and austere aesthetic paired with a high level of craftsmanship. A custom piece in oiled oak and hot rolled steel, the counter is based on a kitchen design by OEO studio for Copenhagen-based Garde Hvalsøe – a cabinet maker known for its highly skilled joinery and high-quality kitchens.

OEO Studio has also reintroduced the original Le Klint 101 pendant lamp in paper designed by Kaare Klint, which originally hung in the café. The pendants are juxtaposed with a new OEO Studio designed ceiling lamp in brass and folded paper inspired by the architecture of the building. The original pendant lamp and the new ceiling lamp are both manufactured by Danish brand Le Klint.

The main café space is furnished by custom café tables and high tables, designed by OEO Studio and produced in a blue grey stain developed specially for the museum. The tables, crafted by Atelier Arethuse, are made from Dinesen ash and feature brass feet. They are paired with a dynamic curation of chairs by iconic Danish designers and architects, including the Principal Chair by Bodil Kjær, the Piano Chair by Vilhelm Wohlert, the Wishbone Chair by Hans J. Wegner and the Drop Chair by Arne Jacobsen.

New bespoke counter style seating has also been installed into the window bays that run the length of the space overlooking the garden. These are also made from blue grey stained ash and are complemented by the Pauline high stool designed by OEO Studio for Danish design brand Brdr. Krüger in smoked oak with a leather seat.

OEO Studio has reused a series of vintage Kaare Klint frames for posters that adorn the walls and has introduced a series of decorative wall-hangings in blue Vidar fabric by Raf Simons for Kvadrat. These wall hangings, placed between the windows, add further colour and introduce a textural layer to contrast with the harder materials and surfaces utilised elsewhere in the space.

OEO Studio
OEO Studio’s full design remit also included a series of lounges and a 35 m2 board room. The lounges adjoin the café on the ground floor and form a casual low seating area, where visitors to the museum can relax in a selection of classic Danish chairs.

For the design of the 140 m2 museum shop, OEO Studio repurposed and reused a range of existing elements, incorporating glass cabinetry designed by Kaare Klint as well as other pieces, which have been part of the museum’s history. The result is a space with a storytelling quality and a personality that embraces the past, present and future. The design departs from that of a traditional museum shop to create a more fluid space with a series of small islands and zones. The design also allows for easy alternation between low and high levels to create depth, direction, and visual focus.

Besides the café and shop areas, OEO Studios has created a special blue colour for the X-Line furniture collection designed by Niels Jørgen Haugesen for Magnus Olesen that is
used in the garden. The studio also updated the existing museum doors with hot-rolled steel to create a more contemporary look.
