Full Program Release: ‘’Urban Learning & The Future of Sharing’’
The 2016 BTS Remade/BJDW curatorial framework encapsulated under the agenda of ‘Urban Learning & The Future of Sharing’ is articulated around two core knowledge-making hubs connected to a set of initiatives and participatory projects involving the local context&residents as a prelude to post-BJDW activities. These are to be found around selected spaces in the area and are organized with long-term partners and collaborators involved in post-event planning as ad hoc public programs and newly created projects rethinking how design can enter productive dialogue with the social and infrastructural givens of this historical urban enclave.
The program is thus divided in three core sections including: two knowledge-making hubs which are The Global School and the Baitasi Print Club, and a number of initiatives scattered around the area under the umbrella of Baitasi Projects.
The Global School (TGS)/
The Global School (TGS) is located in BTS’s old Gongmenkou Food Market and prefigures the establishment of an unprecedented international research & educational institute dedicated to design and the city tasked to network local and international organizations, institutions, companies, professionals and visionaries in various design fields to become part of a new design community and thereof partake in the development of tools and methodologies for engagement with the social and built environment of Baitasi.
The 1500 sqm space has been repurposed by Beijing based reMIX Studio into a polifunctional ‘theatre of happenings’ featuring facilities inclusive of a workshop room, a salon space for informal conversations and sharing sessions, a large auditorium where core forums will be presented and an exhibition area introducing an overview of research-driven projects conducted in the area by local and international practitioners over the past year.
About the transformation of the market designer Nicola Saladino states: ‘’The food market has been closed for more than a year and the building transformed into informal storage spaces and improvised dormitories for migrant workers. Our intervention aims at recovering the original spatial features of the market, which are part of the collective memory of Baitasi, and transform its linear sequence of abandoned rooms and corridors into a vibrant system of interconnected functional clusters’’.
(Urban Regeneration in the Era of Big Data)等项目也将展示更多的相关研究成果。
The core exhibition, says creative director Beatrice Leanza, ‘’presents audiences with a journey through paths of analytical and experimental coalition that take the historical and present problematics of Baitasi (social, economic, spatial) as blueprints for testing new forms of design thinking beyond scales, – that is, with punctuality and precision, across them’’.
As part of the foundational field-work ignited via the program, BTS Remade teamed up with Shenzhen based start-up Shanzhai City to launch here their Impact Learning (IL) project. The IL system is a network of field agents and socially innovative community-engagement technologies for data collection and insight communication. Data will be analyzed and visualized through a publicly accessible online dashboard and via public exhibition and video projection within the community.
The exhibition includes year-long experimentations with the urban fabric of BTS by way of digitally enhanced tools looking at the evolution of the city as a dynamic system of hard and soft interwoven factors thus perusing hutong regeneration through the lens of cross-disciplinary experiments on data-based design ideas and methodologies. Central to these are the results of workshops conducted by AA (Architecture Association – London) Visiting School and IaaC(Barcelona) lead by LCD (Laboratory for Creative Design), and the Pop-UP SutdioX – China Workshop series which will unfold during the weeks of BJDW.
Baitasi in Layers and Urban regeneration in the Era of Big Data provide further insight into relevant explorations.
Research on historical forms of collective living in China is presented by AA Visiting School – Wuhan, as essential to understanding what they mean to both society and individuals nowadays, thus rediscovering opportunities of regeneration from the deep logic of these social and spatial configurations in China, an architectural legacy of which present at the heart of Baitasi with the SuifuJin Socialist Building. Group exhibits from CAFA (Central Academy of Fine Arts)’s renowned Every Day Social Issues program lead by Ben Hughes and his students’ collaboration with German renowned glass maker Nachtmann are also presented here for the first time.
Newly created projects taking inspiration from life in the hutongs for the development of products and urban furniture are on view, developed by SKD Art Education and A-T ARCHITECTS, Andrés López & Isabel Driessen, Casper Notenboom, among others. Furthermore Reorient Express and the V&A’s Unidentified Acts of Design projects articulate narratives of practice and individuals’ lives which add to a radically changing ecosystem of innovation produced at the crossroad of grassroots culture, professionalized amateurism and transborder/transdisciplinary forms of collective knowledge-making.
TGS also features a unique TGS LAB run by LCD (Laboratory for Creative Design) which focuses on augmented design methodologies, rapid manufacturing and open-source systems for hutong regeneration, as a core service platform to be further developed in the area as a participatory project engaging professionals and local residents. Week long exhibitions presented in 5 sections, demonstrations and talks unfold around 3D printing, VR and AR, robotic fabrication and open-source design.
The School also features a special TGS Pop-Up Canteen designed and operated by D-T-Z-W Design Studio offering temporary services to visitors by way of employing local food resources and hacking into the existing commercial ecosystem of the area, including package re-design inspired by the graphic language of found signage.

4 Yards in Baitasi – with graphic project by Liu Zhizhi/Studio NA.EO
The architectural revitalization strategy for Baitasi historic district is yet to be fully explored. Although as part of its first steps over the past two years, the renovation of existing yards in the area has been taken as blueprint to inject new vitality therein, while ‘repurposing’ governmental directives looking into clearing unfit spaces.
The complex property rights entanglements that often abate these neighborhoods have at the same time offered fertile ground for architectural experimentalism on the small scale. The four projects here presented were commissioned to four of China’ s renowned architects to rethink use and functionalities of historical courtyard houses, responsive to the local context as models of renovation that could be employed on a larger scale. They all approach the prototypical formation of the courtyard house to elicit new modalities of reconstruction and accommodation of contemporary life and community needs which could restore their long forgotten values into the present.

Baitasi Projects
Baitasi Projects/
This program section features a variety of initiatives strongly connected to the area and the above investigated subject matters will be featured in selected locations and/or as discursive programs presented in collaboration with The Global School agenda.
These set off a series of experiments with soft-methodologies of community engagements by way of interventions in public spaces as well as in the service ecology of repair shops, food shops and informal spatiality of networking and exchange typical of hutong street life.
These include the Soft City – Octopus Pavillion installed in the open-air square facing the Old Market. Developed as an interface between resident and visiting publics, it is made of an array of pneumatic cells that can inflate, deflate, glow with colored light in response to activity in the site.
Hutong Summit a modular system developed after a study of local rituals of conviviality consumed in the public areas in Baitasi, which rendered into five different typologies that act independently or as a system, adapting themselves to the context and/or to locals’ preferences. The Baitasi Local Constriction Shop initiated by DAMU and The Dye Room by Atlas Studio both open up propositions around material and practical forms of knowledge integration from grassroots to amateurial and traditional crafts, and how these can become springboards for active cooperation to be implemented in the area on the long run.
…And much more!
COMMUNITY OUTREACH IN BTS
The BTS Remade program at BJDW 2016 has been developed with respect of the life ecosystem it enters to which it hopes to bring added value in various forms. Conscious of the fragility and complexity of the intangible relations, dynamics of exchange and reciprocity constitutive and inhabiting a self-sustained environment like that of Baitasi area, we have made an effort to start off soft dialogues of engagements with the residents.
These have started with repurposing the use of typical signage and wayfinding systems that operate as support structure to the temporary existence of events like BJDW.
Designed and developed by LAVA Beijing the Baitasi Remade project’s brand new Visual Identity, Signage and Wayfinding systems are devised to be integrated with the visual language of vernacular festive signing (multicolour flags and banners often lining the streetscape of small scale neighbourhoods) as well as that of its local residents and business owners, whose shopfronts are mostly clustered around the petit yet buzzing commercial street in the proximity of the old market.
Items designed to provide guidance for visitors of BJDW are also offered to local residents to be used and/or appropriated for their own ‘business operation’.
These are part of a BTS Official Vendor’s Kit that each shop owner is given for use during BJDW’s two weeks. These include grocery’s shopping bags, napkins, aprons, tapes and banners.
The items are designed by LAVA Beijing, and the apron’s concept design is kindly provided by architect Yung Ho Chang of Atelier FCJZ.
FIND OUT MORE & BUY AT THE BTS SHOP inside the Market!
Revenues from sales are going to fund new projects developed in BTS.
