Appreciation towards Jingfeng Fang for providing the following description:

主题是the natureof cultural dependence on design.

I was born in a small village of southeast China. The village is a quite isolated place, surrounded by three high mountains and close to nature. People have a very simple, casual, poetic and tranquil life there. My mother gave me my first name Jingfeng 「靜峰」In Chinese it means peaceful mountains. She thought my life ought to be full of poetry, tenderness, generosity and love. I expected my design should have some features of my local culture’s philosophy – Flow with nature, to use material in a natural way with feelings of care and love for the object. By approaching nature as a partner in a relationship, you can make peoples hearts closer to their home and family.

I created a memory box for daily use. The box is a hybrid of a normal squared box and a Chinese wooden lid from my grandmother’s kitchen. I made the knob longer in order to create a symbolic form to give people an unfamiliar familiar feeling, as well as giving people an affordance to open the box without a thought. The material is beech and I use a CNC milling machine to cut the shape, because I intended to give a new definition of the modern craft. It is new but without forgetting old.

The usage of rice as a method for storage, is inspired from my grandmother. She loved to keep her precious thing into a big pile of rice, because she thought it was the safest place at home to keep things. I took her idea to use rice for storage into my project. There is no rule of how to keep your memory objects. I expect that people could explore the way of storage by themselves. They could leave their objects on the surface of the rice, or bury objects under the rice to hide their secrets or private memory. It turns out to be an experimental experience of storage.

The stone created a tranquil and poetic atmosphere. I set the mountain as a symbol of my local culture, which also was proved from traditional Chinese scholars perspective. They were interested in collecting stones to express meaning and place emotion on stones, because they thought stones represented the mountain in their heart. They brought these mountains into their studios as a “ Spirit stone” for meditation and contemplation. The stones’ dramatic form and wondrous colors evoke sensitive emotions. I use porcelain to make the stone, due to its hard but at same time fragile qualities. During the process I worked with the flow of porcelain liquid, when they were in the plaster molds. Therefore every piece of stone is born in a natural way and everyone looks unique.
