Appreciation towards HOUR25 for providing the following description:
WOOD SHAVINGS BENCH is a prototype designed to up-cycle unwanted wood pieces collected from furniture workshop and resurrect them into an assemblage of spatial installation with a radical form. Through careful examination of the dimension and properties of the wood pieces, each of them will be digitally “kerfed”, i.e. a cut into the wood until as thin as 1mm of veneer surface remained which then “soften” the rigid plane of the wood to curl up to as if wood shaved off.
The assemblage demonstrates a family of “wood shavings” lined with green carpets, which gives tactile texture and structural strength to the rolled up wood. The concealed finger joints on both end hold the pieces together to form a diverse configuration resembling scattered wood shavings at the aftermath of workshops.
About HOUR25 PRODUCTION:
HOUR25 PRODUCTION is an independent Hong Kong-based research and design collective working at the 25th hour and beyond to experiment ideas of space and time, and to explore alternative approaches to architecture. Their work is notable for the methodology of experimenting with diverse media and materials which include paper, concrete, electronics, smoke, light and air. This lets them express architectural ideas without the presence of architecture, where the boundaries of the natural, social and artificial are blurred.
HOUR25 PRODUCTION also participated at 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale and Detour 2012: Design Renegade. They are also the core editors for the award-winning publication HOUR25: HKU ARCHITECTURAL PAPERS VOL.1.
ARCHITECTURAL PAPERS VOL.1》
