The first modified concrete 3D-printed pedestrian bridge in Yunnan was recently completed on the banks of Wanhua Stream in Xizhou, Dali. Situated at a critical node of the Xizhou Ecological Corridor, the bridge forms part of the local slow-traffic network. The design adopts a lightweight transformation approach while preserving the spatial memory of the original stone slab bridge. Through a distinctive digital concrete architectural language, it integrates ecological concepts with regional culture, allowing cutting-edge technology to permeate the everyday landscape. This project demonstrates a sustainable pathway for digital construction to empower rural contexts.

The project involves the renovation and upgrading of an existing old bridge under highly complex site conditions. The original bridge exhibits significant elevation differences and is not perpendicular to the banks. Furthermore, the construction site is extremely narrow, severely limiting operational space. Additionally, high humidity during the rainy season and significant diurnal temperature variations increase the risk of material expansion and contraction, thereby amplifying technical challenges and construction uncertainties.

To address the complex existing conditions, the team employed 3D scanning technology to conduct high-precision measurements of the original stone slab bridge, ensuring the accurate on-site placement of each 3D concrete printed module. During construction, any deviations detected were relayed back to the digital model for real-time adjustments. Through multiple iterations of three-dimensional scanning, model comparison, and feedback-based corrections, all errors were systematically reduced to within the permissible tolerance for field construction.

Employing 3D concrete printing technology, the design of Xizhou Wanhua Stream Bridge No.1 deconstructs the traditional pedestrian bridge by integrating steps, parapets, and handrails into a unified form. This creates a landscape feature that is walkable, seatable, leanable, grippable, and also serves as an exceptional vantage point for distant viewing. The design not only addresses functional requirements such as riverbank connectivity, elevation changes, pedestrian safety, and structural integrity but also endows the bridge with aesthetic significance through its fluid morphology. Its form, evoking the delicate folds of petals, appears to bloom along the Wanhua Stream.

Bridge No.1 is not merely a bridge but also a declaration and a starting point. Moving forward, HOPE HOUSING is committed to advancing along this innovative path defined by the convergence of digital intelligence, ecological harmony, and regional identity. Each endeavor will be a testament to harmony, leaving upon the land a contemporary mark—one that whispers of its place and grows with the passing seasons.
