Why going abroad?
I like concrete people and concrete things, so my firm solipsistic way of thinking makes me want to go out and see for myself what lies beyond the Eastern world.
Getting into the context of architecture is a long and even lifelong process. After eight years of accumulation, the thing I have insisted on from the beginning to the end is to do my own design, to do my own thinking. Many times architecture students like to imitate some established styles instead of thinking about the ways to generate them. As a student, you can see a lot of combinations that are reproduced. I am also on the way to find my own style, starting from independent thinking. The result may be immature, but it is a good start. Make the design intimate and moving, carefully polished, while not giving up the initial heart of architecture.
What impressed you the most when you are abroad?
Europe is an integrated yet separated cultural camp. So each country or even each city’s architecture school has different teaching styles and systems. Studying architecture in Europe has a very convenient way for you to choose the direction that suits you. During my graduate studies, I spent a year on exchange at the Porto School of Architecture in Portugal, and six months in Copenhagen, Denmark as an intern, where I lived, studied, and worked in different countries, bringing thickness and depth to my experience. The first time humans tried to depict the shape of the world was with words and pictures. Words use narrative and abstraction to convey imaginary space, pictures use direct and concrete methods to explain space. Just as despite the fact that man has drawn the most precise map of the world, people living in each sphere have their own definition of their “sphere”. I indulged in a pleasant and long vacation with Europe, moved by the respect and humility of European architects for architectural design, and profoundly insisted on my insistence on architecture in a tangential dialogue. The montage of these fragments combined is the most personal and profound thing for me.
What do you miss the most about China?
Family, friends, everything about home.
Will you come back? Why?
I will return to China after gaining more work experience. Before returning to China, I will try to design independently, but I am still not familiar with the Chinese design environment.
Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?
That is inevitable, during the domestic period is more exposed to a kind of knowledge input teaching, after laying a solid foundation, but it is difficult to have time to precipitate ideas.
After going abroad, I saw and felt the language, geography, and cultural divide between the Western and Chinese worlds. During the epidemic, this idea became even more apparent. As a younger generation, we felt more confused and challenged. But this overload of information will bring some qualitative changes in the way of thinking, more not so radical, comprehensive analysis and observation, and cautious expression became a norm for me.
What are the educational characteristics of your school?
The European style is more focused on the interpretation of the site text, and the advancement of the design studio is accompanied by relevant lectures and book lists. At the Porto School of Architecture, this teaching model is reinforced. Design courses are accompanied by history, theory and construction classes. The results are more specific and practical, and innovation is rationalized and cascaded.
Politecnico di Milano is located in the north of Italy, but has seven campuses, with different architectural directions located in different cities. Therefore, the style of education is more comprehensive based on theory, material, form and site context. In recent years, we have invited architects of high reputation to give guest lectures, such as Kazuo Seijima, Tadao Ando and Demora, and the types of studios are also more diverse and high quality. Each semester has a very tight schedule, and the design classes are open to all classrooms at the end, turning the whole building into an open showroom. If you actively participate in the studios and think and learn to draw design at the pace of the professor, you will find that you can learn a lot of great ways to think about design. Also, Italian architecture and engineering students work very hard and feel the pressure from their peers and teachers.
What are the characteristics and interesting points of your firm?
The company’s New York office is currently 400 people strong, and the people in each department form a great collaborative atmosphere and design sharing community. I am currently involved in three projects for the firm. The work is well organized and the work-life balance is good as the design progresses, and I am growing fast in this large and mature community.
Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?
The most inspiring Italian artist I came across while studying in Italy was Giorgio de Chirico, whose work expresses a lot of metaphysical ideas, although in a Western context, but in a way similar to Chinese ideas. The intriguing urban spaces, marble statues, and deep shadows in his works give me a new perspective on things. It’s like what Walter Benjami described as an aura. This kind of aura is even more rare in the contemporary world of architecture, where there are so many different kinds of aura.
What fascinates viewers the most in your portfolio in your opinion?
In my study of theoretical books and sociology, I tried to understand the contradictions between populist and academic styles, and developed a design style in the middle grey zone, a rather greedy and centrist idea that still exists. I like the statement of a theoretical scholar that art should have an “aura”
“If, while resting on a summer afternoon, you follow with your eyes a mountain range on the horizon or a branch which casts its shadow over you, you experience the aura of those mountains, of that branch…”
This kind of design with an aura is also the result of my pursuit and advancement. My design is more of a painfully unrestrained and repeatedly tangential, which is the privilege of young designers. We can do a lot to make tradition new, to make subordination independent, to make rejection attractive.

Floating Chips
Media libray in Guangzhou
Spring 2017 Panyu district·Guangzhou Instructor Yiqiang Xiao Team project
This project is located in a new district near Guangzhou where has grown up kind of mature urban framework, residence, government, basic constructure. It seems like that this district began to step into another generation building a multicultural atmsphere libary to fullfill the cultural desert. Floating chips had a vision for the library- the future of the library should be a space for inspiration, learning, exchange and creation. Throughout the design process we have followed the same goals and beliefs in what we felt the library should be, that we wanted to create a building that focussed on people and create spaces that has the least boundry to reach. The aim is to create a building that feels like a second home for the citizens of Panyu. The answer to these changes and challenges are what we refer to as a shift from “collection to connection”.
The public space at the center of the community determines the quality of the community. The relationship between the traditional building surface and cities and streets is alienated and overly clear. The key to breaking closed social relationships is building flexible building skins. It is more like a floating chip, an artificial cloud. But what is certain is that it brings great appeal to the community. An opportunity to become a city business card. Simple but changeable horizontal floors and transparent glass curtains are also a Mies style deconstruction.
The western facade of the Library building is more important than the others, not just because of sun light’s affluence , but that side is facing the river ang grove and park. We “plug in” Library into the urban network of the city.By building a house near the park, we also tend to bring the park into the house and in such a way the greenery and the Library can “work” together, just like plants from the south live in northern botanical gardens during the winter.
As a social occasion for the new community in the future, it is more like a platform, providing the most friendly rather than closed urban living room for citizens. The irregular skin, the absolutely open ground-floor and the roof garden are the impression of the library. The compact core box will store a series of books and new media information. By connecting floors and building environments, these open areas become the patio, living room, studio and study of the city.
The floor of the Library is free and horizontal. To achieve this effect, the concealment of the structure is critical. The library uses a steel truss roof to suspend the floor, so that the transmission of force is from top to bottom. Those who enter the space can feel a beautiful expression of structure and space. The interaction between people and space achieves the goal of the highly flexible cross-cultural atmosphere.
The structuralist order is used to form the terraces and intimate spaces that flow one into another. The building is vertically zoned with functional units distributed over the “roof top gardens”, over open terraces or closed “living rooms” depending on the need to be in the “room” or in the “street”. The gardens are connected by horizontal corridors / bridges, stairways, escalators and elevators. While designing a library in the park we concluded that bringing the park into the library is just as important.
The directionless and homogeneous large space on the external world shows the surge and self-development of modern knowledge. To achieve this goal, the load of the component is transferred from the floor to the pull rod, from the roof truss to the four core tubes. The ground floor space was liberated. Public and open space is evenly distributed on this floor, and citizens can use it as wish.
The plaza looks like an urban cave without any visible pillars and is openly accessible, allowing visitors and citizens of the Panyu district to take a shortcut through the building.
The hustle and bustle of the city is disappearing as it approaches the river and the grove. Landscaping and resting facilities on the steps form a comfortable echo of the west-facing site.
A beam of light , FOUR ATRIUMAS , FOUR STAIRS
“Natural light” is the soul of the library, filled the light of the crown, sky-filled atrium, spilled the platform of the shadow, quiet beam, refraction, diffuse, shelter, import, energy to maximize capture, import and circulation. The natural light through the trees, creating a “Light of the Temple.”In order to strengthen the feeling of the atrium, each atrium placed different forms of walking staircase.
The turning staircases have different modulus and forms, making the walking process more interesting.Besides, staircase became a bridge between interior, atrium and outside. The boundless library provides an inclusive city interface and internal space, no matter for a passer-by or a reader.A beam of light ,four atriumas and four stairs will form a wonderfall atmosphere to read ,relax and ecperience.

Student residence with the audience in Porto
Autumn 2019 – Spring 2020 Porto·Portugal Instructor·Nuno Brandão Costa Personal project
This student apartment project is located in Porto, Portugal’s second largest modern city, with complex urban topography and simple residential buildings. How to respond to the site’s culture, construction style and site has become the key to the design. The roads, buildings, landscape, structure and equipment of the site were completely designed. It is emphasized that architecture should not be the main role of the venue, on the contrary, it is the organizer of a stage. The change of terrain has become a special opportunity. The red hyperbolic volume building appears to be separated in the site, but is connected underground, and has a great echo in the form and vertical interface. This contradictory and related logic is repeatedly emphasized in the design.
This is a commercial-residential complex that includes audience dormitories and apartments. First, a new road needs to be planned on the site, and the relationship between the building and the main road is established. The volume and function are mirrored on the left and right sides of the new planned road, which produces an interesting response, antithesis. The apartments on the west are sim-ilar in scale and height to the surrounding residential buildings, and on the east are more varied forms and functions.
The outside of the wall has been painted with rough red paint and has been decorated with concrete molding panels. The molding board emphasizes the extension in the vertical direction according to the size of the opening of the window, and at the same time forms the level of the facade.

Link Complex
The hospital, campus, residence and innovation city park of Turin
Spring 2021 Turin, Italy Instructor· Roberto Ravegnani Morosini Team project
The aim of this project is to analyze the linkage and growth of modern large hospitals with their urban context. The Turin Health Park competition was adopted as the mothership. The park is also the central element of the design. It is a public place for visitors, patients, researchers and students, so we decided not to address the site in isolation, we respected the historical value of the site. Creating an active urban health space in line with contemporary times. The new complex will follow the strip volume of the surrounding historic buildings and add rich features to activate the site. We built the entire park-services-bridge-hospital-plaza intertwined, which makes this master plan particularly unique.
While the blocks of typical European houses were kept, their growth was observed. The form of contemporary residence has become common. The urban form of Turin is built along the river, so many strip buildings are extended. After the development of the urban module, the form of residential buildings began to no longer comply with the complete and continuous boundary under the influence of modernism.
There are several important interfaces or buildings around the site, Oval Lingotto, Train Station, Lingotto, Fuksus Tower. We try to extract and abstract the surrounding facade elements and facade techniques, and use them in the design of the entire project, so that the entire link-complex facade maintains relative harmony with the surrounding environment.
The strategy continues the perimeter axis of the traditional urban fabric of Turin. Within this axis, which runs from the city centre to the residential area to Lingotto, the new health park logically continues this perimeter. The bar-shaped volume is characteristic of Turin’s architectural tradition of industrial architecture. But it is not just a huge monument plan, we have developed the concept of the Link complex. This huge volume is broken down into four main functions, such as housing, education, research and healthcare. Each part of the huge volume has been broken down, and each platform, node and corridor has been refined and deepened. It embodies simplicity in complexity and clarifies the concept in simplicity.
It is the source of two large flows of people. This is the first reason why we want to strengthen this axis. In addition, we want to increase the flow of people from the ground floor to the first level, which not only improves the efficiency of traffic, but also ensures the safety and relative privacy of the groundfloor. The connection between the underground space and the train station allows people to enter the hospital directly from the metro station without going through the city.
This will be a new urban green area center. Through some urban walking trails and runways, the large green area inside the project is connected to the riverside park and the inner park, which greatly enriches the urban greening network and makes it More complete.
The central park of the complex is an extension of the side greenery of Lingotto. In terms of landscape, on the side of the city road, we try our best to use the same linear green block method to connect the two sites. In other words, we put It is designed as the same venue.
On one side of the park, we also gradually transitioned the square green shape to a relatively soft curved landscape. In addition, the runway inside this area strongly implies the integrity and unity of the entire site.
In the green area of the main street of the complex, in the direction of the main street, we try to strengthen this road like a valley. On the first level on the left, it is an outdoor green corridor for staff in the turin health park. On the side of the hospital, it is the main street of the hospital.
We have provided windows that can be opened to face the landscape beds. The rest of the windows are floor-to-ceiling and provide better light to the patients. The space in the ward is enclosed. We needed to consider how to solve the problem of providing a better psychological environment for the patients in such an enclosed space. It should act as a mediator, regulating the relationship between the outside and the inside.

Pixel Home
Towering toothpick apartment
Spring 2017 Hongkong·Hung Hom Instructor · Yiming Zhu Personal project
Hong Kong is one of the most expensive and densely populated cities on Earth. With over 7 million people living on an island just 1,102 square km is size, the population is constantly struggling for space. Like other major cities around the world, Hong Kong is in the midst of an affordable housing crisis. The strict limitations on space mean that there is a capped supply of housing on the island. A limited supply, paired with an ever-growing demand, has caused Hong Kong housing prices to skyrocket. Helping to ease this problem The Hong Kong Pixel Home architecture competition participants are tasked to utilize the Hong Kong’s last remaining pixel-sized spots of the land to design affordable residential buildings that will help alleviate the city’s housing crisis and support its low and middle class community struggle for accommodation.
The contemporary Hongkong condition is distressed by housing shortages distinguished by inflationary markets and increased economic disparity. Residents are confronted by an increasingly ballooning compromise between capital and comfort. The Hong Kong Pixel Home seeks solutions that would stem this trend through typological disruption, reimagining the micro-unit dwelling. The optimism of the proposal relies on the idea that this existence has the potential to be fun, if we find comfort in relaying the activity of the private domestic sphere in a theater of spectacle for the public realm.
Hung Hom has a high volume rate.In the traditional street scale background ,towering toothpick building set up , where people’s rhythm of life began to change. The old man, the family, the couple, the single woman can all be able to adapt to this treasure land and began to get in touch with each other.
· The changing roof affects the use of indoor and outdoor, and brings different types and platforms for different use feelings.
· Composed of a 144 square meter prefabricated housing units, the aggregation of modules creates a vertical village, rethinking domestic space on an urban scale.
Paradoxically, although the units appear to be homes, their internal morphology radically alters typical domestic space from a series of rooms into an adaptable set of flexible functions and zones. The inhabitants can reappropriate and change the use of each space, enabled by the generosity of the layouts. The spaces between each prefabricated unit allows for light into the spaces and offer an opportunity for vegetation to occupy these interstitial voids.
Through the use of the vernacular form of the home – the gable – the sectional variation of each housing module produces a rich spatial variety amongst the units – creating terraces, pocket gardens, and lofts each with a unique lighting condition. The project seeks to reclaim the scale of the city by inserting these vertical neighborhoods into the fabric of Hong Kong, interconnected by exterior passageways, shared spaces, and common gardens for collective activities such as worship, markets, and leisure.

BIO BLOOD
Biosynthetic urban design in Namsan
Fall 2016 Korean·Seoul·HBC Town Instructor·Yiqiang Xiao Team Project
As the heart of South Korea, Seoul is a city which is bold in initiating the future as well as respecting the history. Namsan and Yongsan, as the hidden treasures of Seoul are not only the ecological emblems but also the historical symbolizations of South Korea. It is between these two significant ecological resources that our site , Haebangchon ,is located, which cause we realize that Haebangchon has the important task to link these tow part together and ultimately create a biosynthetic future of Namsan.Through a broader survey of the urban community of Haebangchon on Namsan-both real and imagined, and through architectural reincarnation in various forms of hidden public spaces, the ideal proposals shall address and challenge key concepts regarding post-human community, biosynthetic diversity, social sustainability, and urban regeneration.
This village in the city with a population of 12000 in 2015,once was considered as a project“Green Corridor” and finally cancelled when facing harsh criticism. We need preserve the existing urban fabric and retain the current community intact, while fostering urban design and eco sysytem revitalization.
For creating a biosynthetic future of amsan we attempt to create a ecological corridor in Sowolro 20-gil(street) which runs along the ridge of the hill. This ecological corridor is just like a BLOOD pours out from Namsan, flows through and renews the Haebangchon and finally links the Yongsan Park. The original hard paving is replaced by soilLocal trees and creature. Transportation are transferred to the underground. It changes the status of the village in the city in a gradual mode.
When imaging the wonderful vision of the river we still realize that this green river will inevitably tear the life of the residents once lived beside the street, then we finally decide to use the specific bridges we designed to cure this cut. It is from the relationship between the river and bridges that we see the relationship between the nature and manmade identities and thus the post-human community is repainted. There are three bridges in our intervention site to make up the interruption.
The insertion of the river and the three bridges softly change the original life styles of the citizens, New activities types and life experiences emerge around the bridges. Since the continuity of the closed space and open space, people can freely move between the private space and public space.

Fall 2020 Iceland·Reynisdrangar Personal work
The ocean and the fate of humanity have been linked from a very early age. As a higher life form on land and sea, human’s longing for whale has always existed in the heart. The bionic form of the whale became the language of this chapel. A whale stranded on the coast of Iceland. A person can enter its body through a low fishtail and experience the perspective of a whale looking at the ocean. The waves and the inner voice meet here. In such a space, it is easier for humans to reflect on the neglect of envi-ronmental degradation.
As a temporary and yet to be completed project, the supporting structure falls on the beach to ensure minimal damage to the natural environment. The black wood echoes the traditional way of Iceland. Natural and environmentally friendly materials make this project a tourist destination that calls for environmental protection and saves whales. The church used dark natural light as much as possible to direct the sight to the ocean. Here you can admire Iceland’s most famous black beach.
What is the most important thing about landscape architecture? The possible answer is respect and integration with the environment. The concept of expressing chapel in a bionic whale response to this topic. Tourism has caused irreversible damage to Iceland’s natural environment. While watching the scenery, tourists can also feel the noble place of other life in such a narrow space. It will not be limited by the scale of the project and has profound and long-term significance.

In a theater, actors and spectators can relate to each other. Actors are active in their stage space and have their own fields. The fields can be concrete and abstract, with clear or vague boundaries, which can be huge or small.
In a home, furniture is home of the actor, usually play their own role, door, chair, bed, channel, stairs, they have the same essence of eternal, interesting is that every piece of classic furniture has a defining attribute of space strong, a room can be because different people feel different furniture use this room, a door entrance can be defined, a chair can be determined the living room, a bedroom bed can be defined.

FUN PALACE
Cultural complex in Milan
Autumn 2019 Milan· Italy Instructor·Rocca Alessandro Team project
An area of a country or city where the people have a different religion, culture or nationality from those who live in the country or city that surrounds it. The idea in my mind is a crowd of people who are absolutely free and absolutely concentrated. The enclave provides a place for entertainment and function while respecting the original industrial atmosphere and heritage elements of the venue. It is a song of modern freedom culture, a definition of emotion in architecture, and a powerful combination of structure and form.
It seems that a large roof is the most contemporary and most effective way to assemble people. The diversity of the roof determines the characteristics of the space.
Or, a concrete function building, similar to a theater, as a medium to attract people to the venue, with a public square, the image of the Happy Palace has slowly emerged.
The Fun Palace would challenge the very definition of architecture, for it was not even a conventional ‘building’ at all, but rather a kind of scaffold or framework, enclosing a socially interactive machine – a virtual architecture merging art and technology. In a sense, it was the realization of the longunfulfilled promise of Le Corbusier’s claims of a technologically informed architecture and the ‘machine for living’.

BRIDGE WITH PAVILION
Reconstruction of rural corridors
Fall 2017 Guizhou·Dali Town Personal work
The project locates in Dali town of Guizhou province. Local people’s life is closely related to a river which devides the village into two parts and some little bridges aross the river is the only way for people to go through. Because of the mountainous location, the poles get submerged by stream rising during the rain season every year. So building a firm bridge is urgent. I also hope it can act as a bond to restablish the relationship between people, village and nature.Bamboo is considered as the best material that is easy to get and maintain. If the project can be constructed in the future, villagers can obtain a bridge with pavilion to go through and rest for a while in sunny , rainy , and, festival day.
Reconstruction Bridge with Pavilion
A work of architecture, a construction, a house or a cup could be defined through features of formal, which express problems running from design to use, from production to reproduction.
In order to make the reconstruction of the bridge no longer infracted to seasonal flooding, I take a tradition Chinese bridge structure-Tessere Structure, which can effectively lift the plateau deck elevation, delaying the erosion of river on the bridge.Retaining the original space module of the bridge, the bridge node unique structure solves the complex difference height of the ground. It also bridges the accessibility and connotation of space biande, which connects with the original life on both sides of the village.
Plan with the surroundings.
The project focus on the structure of bamboo. Bamboo nodes should take as much low cost and soild as possible. The simple node structure allows villagers to build the bridge as quickly as possible.allows villagers to build the bridge as quickly as possible.
