A bosom friend afar brings distant land near. The Oversea album shares the lives of Chinese living abroad with all. The No.20 episode is about Yuechen Hu who worked and studied in the UK.

为什么出国？

Why study abroad?

我觉得我需要一些时间生活在另一片土地上，在有着不同想法的人群之间。旅行让我建立一个新的思维模式和看世界的角度，人生因此变得更有趣丰富。世界是一个大游乐场，一个游戏再好玩也不必重复，还有更多更有趣的等着呢。

I feel the need to spend time in other lands, among people that do things differently to me. Traveling has given me a new perspective to think about the world. I like to be challenged and inspired by the world around me. The world, the way I see it, is a big amusement park, so why just go on one ride?

在国外遇到了什么让你印象最深刻的事情？

Is there anything happened impressed you?

在暑期实习在工作场合被一个合作者开了个非常不合时宜带种族歧视的玩笑，我的英国老板是一个非常好的人，让那个人向我道歉。感动之余，我第一次正视和思考这个问题。我觉得首先要不卑不亢，自信自己的文化和背景，因为人们对待你很大程度上取决于你怎么对待自己。在受到不公平的待遇的时候勇敢捍卫自己的权益比起忍气吞声更能得到他人的尊重。

During my summer internship, a collaborator directed a racial joke towards me in the workplace. My British boss asked him to apologize to me and the issue was soon resolved. After this incident I was quite moved and began to consider my own strengths and weaknesses. Bravery to stand your ground in these moments, I feel, inspires greater respect among peers and improves self confidence. Since this incident and inspired by my boss I have became more established and confident in my own cultural values.

一个巨大有潜力的市场，充满机遇和挑战，迷人而特别的文化，没有什么比这更吸引一个冒险者了。

Yes! There is a huge potential market, full of opportunities and challenges. The culture is charming and special.

Nothing is more attractive for an adventurer than it in China.

出国后在不同的背景下再看中国是否看得更清晰，有哪些感触？

Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going aboard? Any thought?

借由工作关系，一直做国际项目主要是俄罗斯和中国。两个国家的相似之处是都在借由西方一些城市规划设计先进的理念来解决城市发展遇到的问题，及其加速城市化进程中新城的建设。非常好的一面是景观建筑师的认可度正在提升，一些先进的理念也被介绍应用。我也观察到甲方不再一味追求“西方风格”的设计，而是尊重场地条件和文脉，希望设计能够根植于当地文化。

在景观设计行业，国内还是很缺乏完善的法律法规和行业系统。如英国景观设计师协会承担着整个行业的运营和发展，为社会公众保护自然环境，与政府合作提高规划设计管理等等功能，是一个发展多年功能和法律法规完善的组织，保证了整个行业的健康发展。

像我这样刚刚毕业的人从中最大的获益是可以参加注册景观设计师的动态学习和考试，最后成为一名注册景观设计师。考试的过程也不仅仅是一张答卷，而是由导师，协会监督人三方形成的动态学习过程和反馈审查。国内也应该尽快建立相应的组织保证行业的规范化。

I was participating mainly in international projects in Russia and China. Some similarities that these two countries possess are their enthusiasm to use advanced planning concepts to solve  urban development problems (which include city expansion). It is good to see that the recognition of landscape architects in China is improving as some advanced concepts have been introduced. I also observed that the clients are more likely to respect site conditions and context. Clients need a design proposal rooted in local culture rather than a typical ‘western-style’ .

As for the landscape design industry in China, there is still a lack of domestic laws and regulations and organization to improve the system. For example,  Landscape Institute in UK is responsible for the operation and

development of the whole industry, protecting the natural environment for the public. It does this primarily by cooperating with the government to improve the planning and design management. It is a renowned organization with a long history of ensuring healthy development within the industry.

For graduates like me, I can take part in programs such as the “Pathway to Chartership” and train to become a chartered landscape architect. It is based on active learning and continual assessment opposed to just an exam paper. Candidates are mentored by a Chartered Member of the “LI“ and I also receive regular feedback from a pathway supervisor. China could also establish a similar organization to ensure greater standardization of the industry.

最喜欢的艺术家（绘画音乐电影等广泛范围）是谁？给你创作带来了什么影响？

what is your favorite artist(in wider range such as art, music, movie)?What is the influence?

极简主义给了我很大影响，很喜欢艺术家Sol LeWitt的一句话，许多成功的想法是最简单直接的，因为必然如此。有时候想得太多，太注重形式反而会影响对问题本身的解决。

还有我最喜欢的跨界设计师是Thomas Heatherwick 。被称为英国近年来最有天赋和创造力的设计师之一，他总是有各种独特的思维来创造匪夷所思的设计创作。创新和灵感无疑使设计师最重要的东西。Thomas展示了怎样挖掘建材和技艺的潜力，怎样逆向思维，让我学会注重一开始思考的质量，想明白了，执行可以很快。但如果一开始就想错方向，未来调整只会越来越难。

Minimalism has given me a greater influence on my design philosophy. The artist Sol LeWitt’s quoted ‘Most ideas that are successful are ludicrously simple. Successful ideas generally have the appearance of simplicity because they seem inevitable.’ I feel that having a more simple form will help to resolve more complex problems.Currently, my favorite designer is Thomas Heatherwick. I believe he is one of the most talented and creative designers in the UK. His thinking is profoundly unique and he is able to generate incredibly creative design ideas. Innovation and inspiration is no doubt the most important things for designers. Thomas has revived my intrigue to explore the potential of materials and techniques and has given me the inspiration to think outside the box. I have also discovered through Thomas’ work that finding an idea that resonates with me, my project and my team, makes it much easier to develop and deliver in the long run.

Tegel机场改建再生 

Tegel Airport Regeneration

Tegel机场是柏林主要的国际机场，距市中心仅8公里，并具有良好的交通网络。在2014年关闭后，它将投入到公众使用区域。

方案定义基地为集大学校园，办公室和住宅区的混合功能性用地。航站楼将成为一个展览中心。该项目的出发点是将景观与外部空间作为催化剂用于城市发展。它将开发保留基地的历史文脉，同时拓展新的经济和公共领域需求。

基地的飞机跑道是基地最显著的标志和特点。方案将保留最主要的一条跑道，转换成一个“绿道”，然后延伸高架桥和航站楼的轴线关系发展第二条绿道，线性人工湖将绿色设施延伸到更广大的区域，加强两条绿道之间的关系，也是雨水管理系统的一部分。它还提供城市市民探索大自然，做运动，旅游和休闲娱乐的地方。

Berlin Tegel Airport is the main international airport of Berlin, only 8km northwest of the city center and has well connected transport links. After it close in 2014, it will be brought back to public use.

The proposal is developing the vast area for university campus, office, and housing. The terminal building becomes a exhibition center. The premise of the project is to use landscape and exterior program as a catalyst for urban development. It seeks to simultaneously acknowledge the rich history of the site while looking forward to new economies and public realms.

The concept of the project is to use landscape as a catalyst for urban development. The figure of the runway is used to identify primary axes. It keeps one former runway which is converted into a “greenway” and then copyanother strip following the axis of the terminal building and overpass. The two greenways are programmed as recreation and production. Two linear artificial lakes connect with wider landscape to introduce green infrastructure to the blocks and it can be a part of the storm water management. It also strengthen the relationship of three greenway. Water bodies are providing wide range of activities to the city offering places to explore nature, do sports, travel and relax.

最重要的绿道建立了一个城市线性公园。由周边社区定义不同功能的休闲空间，允许各种不同规模的活动。从社区花园，运动场，公共绿地，休闲公园和植物园，对应周边的社区功能，办公楼，图书馆，社区中心，博物馆，艺术画廊等等。保留一条飞机跑道标志这个地区的历史和背景，也可以骑自行车，放风筝等。在未来，人们仍然可以带着孩子到跑道中间，说： “飞机曾经在这里起飞降落…… ”

The most important greenway establishes a recreation corridor for new neighbourhoods. It marks recreation-‘rooms’, defines spaces by landform and planting which will be shared by the surrounding community, allowing for a variety of activities at various scales. from community garden, sports pitches, public green to leisure park and botanic garden, the open space is corresponding civic institutions: office building, library, community center, museum, art gallery and so on. One of tarmac runway is kept to remind the history and context of this area, also a good place for cycling, kite flying and so on . In the future, people can still take their kids into the middle of the runway and say: “They used to land planes here…”

The north-south greenway is a landscape of production. It linked two residential areas. Along its length is programs capable of producing food and energy to make tegel as self-sustaining as possible. The greenway is treated as an interdependent production activities, with changing densities of fish farming, greenhouses for fruit, vegetable and flower production, allotment gardens, markets and tree farming. Fish Farms are located along the canal and are serve a local populace through an adjacent market. A series of greenhouses，allotment garden and farm plots which subdivide the space and integrate the adjacent communities into the strip. The production strip is organized as a sustainable system. The nutrients in the water from fish farming is utilized in the greenhouses or the excess heat from the infrastructure is recycled into the greenhouses.

The ecology network responds a series of existing micro-ecologies, including wetlands, habitats and artificial beaches. It is conceived as a experimental ecosystems labs, organic rooms, landscape surfaces of hard and soft scape, gardens and pools. The wetlands is served to clean the water, act as a watershed, and control soil erosion. Furthermore, they become the home to a rich diversity of ecosystems and their associated wildlife.

Redlees Country Park

位于格拉斯哥的拉纳克郡南部的Redlees郊野公园旨在连接绿地和自然保护区，增强历史和生态功能，成为一个周边社区户外休闲的聚集点。它鼓励更广泛的社区活动，通过支持积极的生活方式，提高健康水平，并通过创建连接栖息地支持生物多样性和环境可持续性。

Located on the south side of Glasgow in South Lanarkshire, Redlees country park aims to join up green space and nature reserves with new paths and enhanced historical and ecological features, which could become an outdoor recreation attractions, drawing people from across Scotland. This park works as a catalyst for social change within the area which responds to the needs of the residents rather than concentrating on individual sites. It encourage stronger communities, improve health by supporting active lifestyles and support biodiversity and environmental sustainability by creating connected habitats.

At the onset of the industrial revolution, the site developed a strong industrial character, particularly related to sandstone quarry and clay pit. Former industrial and military features on the site of the park have since been demolished, but the characters still remain on the site.It is hoped that the rich variety of history on the site offers a potential for visitor interaction and education, with historical trails connecting sites, and emphasis placed on key historical features to help define the identity of the park.

该公园提供不同适用人群的休闲空间。由地形和现存植被定义空间布局。骑马小径，散步径，自行车道，让游客以不同方式体验到公园的不同部分。一个从Bantyre跨越铁路的安全的自行车道连接公园道更广大的区域。该公园设轮椅使用者通道和停车场。教育空间是互动和合作学习的地方，包括观赏野生动物塔，池塘和战争纪念公园。

The park provides an amenity space for community use for different group of people. Set into the topography of the site, The space arrangement blends into its surroundings and starts to communicate the historic development of the site. Horse riding trails, walker trails, cycle trails allow visitors to experience different part of the park. There is a safe connecting cycle path from the Bantyre to the site across the railway. The park also provide path and car parking for wheelchair users. Educational spaces are places for interactive and cooperative learning which include wildlife watching tower, pond area and war memorial park.

The proposal is to take an ecological approach to the restoration, working with nature to create a site rich in wildlife and attractive for local people to enjoy. An important aspect of the project was looking beyond the park’s boundaries so as to extend the park into the housing estate, thereby blending the two environments. Connecting the park to existing green areas, wildlife corridors, and recreational corridors are all salient aspects of my design.

Restoration of the pond area. Clear out debris and reprofile the pond to create shallow shelves for amphibians. Plant oxygenating plants. Redesign paths and provide landscape to enhance the area. Enhance and reprofile further shallow ponds and manage birch woodland to allow more diverse ground flora in acid grassland. The area by the pond is of great interest in terms of the acid grassland, birch woodland and wetland flora and fauna, this should be encouraged.

The war memorial park is specific interventions and focal points to attract people. In the past, it was used as army camp and gun battery which is a cold concrete site. After it was abandoned, vegetation swallowed it and back to stillness. The concept seeks to convey the site’s history through an low key and subtle method to build the tomb of the disappearing structures. Existing gun battery and placement would be kept to show the past which evokes the memory of the war. Corten steel was selected for its rich echoes of the site’s history to mark the location of destroyed buildings and structures. A new path network is introduced to define the sequence to visit the site in order to create a place for public gathering, with spaces for intimate contemplation. Together, these architecturaland landscape elements reveal and engage the cultural and natural history of the site by creating and framing a unique dialogue of textures: grey concrete, brick wall, sycamore bark, and soft grassland,shrub and trees. The war memorial park is also a good place to educate students.
