About NODE

1.
What was the motivation behind the establishment of the studio? What “NODE” means, and what design philosophy does it reflect?

Our studio was officially established in early 2004. Although based in Nansha, it was actually founded in Hong Kong. The name “NODE” is derived from the initials of Nansha Original DEsign. NODE is a multifaceted term, representing the intersection of various directions, possibilities, trends, and events. Architecture itself, whether in terms of space, location, or lifestyle, is also an important node. Additionally, NODE can be interpreted as a “crossroad,” multidimensional and symbolizing future possibilities. At different nodes, we are constantly making choices, and these choices influence future creations.

I hope to always maintain the passion and desire for creation, rather than dispersing my energy into management. Therefore, our studio has always maintained a size of around 15-20 people, as this scale is more conducive to creativity, allowing the team to have more communication and discussion in design.

How has your design philosophy changed over the past 20 years? In your opinion, how does the current “revolution” in Chinese architecture differ from that of 10 or 20 years ago?

Throughout my journey, there have been many significant milestones. My mentor, Mark Mack, focused on regional modernism, emphasizing a blend of regionality and modernity. I adopted some of his creative directions. My first project after returning was the Nansha Science Museum, which utilized many approaches I learned at Berkeley. Therefore, in the early stages of my practice, regionality and modernity were key concepts. Projects like the Folded House—Nanjing Pearl Spring Artist Studio represented that period. This specific study of the site brought about spatial concepts that were quite conceptual, transforming into a minimalist modernist style.

In 2007, working with Rem Koolhaas on the Time Art Museum was another significant milestone. Koolhaas did not design this building in a traditional manner; instead, he broke down the 3,000-square-meter museum into functional blocks and integrated these dispersed blocks into a closed box. This had a revolutionary impact on my design philosophy, showing me that public buildings could achieve functional integration similar to residential buildings. Integrating urbanism concepts into architectural design, while preserving the characteristics of the museum, transformed it into a part of the community’s daily life.

Koolhaas’s concept of “breaking down the whole into parts” was revolutionary for me and provided a significant realization. As the LDI for the Time Art Museum, I learned from him that architecture, people, and urban life can be unified. How to break the boundaries between public and private spaces and integrate them became a foundational issue that brought changes to my design philosophy. This was also the motivation for me to pursue a Ph.D. in the U.S. and set the direction for my subsequent series of practices.

When I talk about revolution, it primarily means reinventing myself. From the 1950s and 60s to now, our lives have undergone significant changes. What do these changes mean for architecture? What do they mean for space creation? The reflections on architecture brought by the changes in people and cities are what I consider a revolution.

Learn from the everyday life

3.
What role does infrastructure play in modern Chinese cities? How do you make “invisible” infrastructure “visible” in urban spaces? How do you reintegrate these infrastructures into daily life for citizens?

(Learn from the everyday life, Everyday people)。

My Ph.D. advisor, Margaret Crawford, is a leading scholar in Everyday Urbanism, and her influence on me has been profound. She believes we should learn from the everyday life, Everyday people. The daily routines and wisdom of people should be the source of inspiration for architects. Changes in people’s lives bring about changes in lifestyles, which in turn lead to greater demands on physical space. This bottom-up approach can bring more vitality to cities and people’s lives.

Infrastructure is typically viewed as a cold, engineering concept. In daily life, much infrastructure is often “invisible,” yet it occupies significant urban land and national investment. As people’s diverse spatial needs overlap, land resources become very limited, and this conflict is intensifying. Ensuring that every life form has a “dignified life” makes spatial equity crucial. We believe that utilizing infrastructure is a key solution because it occupies important land that seems neglected from urban life but actually has many connections.

The architecture of the city。

In 2017, we finally had our first infrastructure project, turning our research and ideas into a real project. This marked the beginning of our practice in integrating infrastructure land. The fusion of engineering, urban design, and architecture completes people’s everyday lives in the city.

Rossi focused on the essence of architecture, which we call “the architecture of the city.” He studied urban architecture, especially public architecture, through typology, giving his design a certain recognizability. In contrast, Koolhaas did not emphasize form but aimed for forms that respond to people’s needs. This top-down approach brought different perspectives to my work. The writings and later works of Rossi and Koolhaas in the 60s and 70s continue to influence my practice and thinking, serving as a source of inspiration for my creations.

_________
Individual vs. Collective

4.
In Shanghai Nanqiao Academy Comprehensive Building, how did you balance preserving historical heritage with modern educational needs? How do you view the relationship between the “individual and Collective” in broader design contexts?

Nanqiao Academy is a unique project, with its site and history providing a crucial starting point for our design. As a former missionary school, it has strong ties to spiritual places like churches while also integrating Jiangnan culture from Shanghai.

The existing church is particularly interesting, as it does not follow the traditional Western Gothic style but resembles a Chinese ancestral hall. Upon entering and turning a corner, the interior transforms into a Gothic longitudinal axis, symbolizing a blend of Western ideology and Chinese traditional culture. We aimed to incorporate this concept of East-West cultural fusion into the architectural composition of Nanqiao Academy.

Additionally, the local community wanted to return this area and the surrounding waterfront space to the residents and make the gymnasium accessible to the public. This required consolidating the scattered functions within the school into a single block, freeing up more land for public use. The building covers an area of 9,000 square meters with a floor area ratio of 4.5, including functions such as a cafeteria, theater, laboratories, library, and multipurpose classrooms. Given the vast scale, we decided to break it down into individual units, each designed in its ideal spatial form, and then piece them together like building blocks. This approach made the large volume appear more human-scaled and established a friendly relationship and visual connection with the canal. Different functional blocks can operate independently or be opened to the community.

Returning to the relationship between the “individual” and the “Collective,” architecture is much like a city. Accommodating the possibilities of use by different people at different times allows the building to be utilized to its fullest potential.

_________
Structure as Space

5.
In Liuxiandong project, you used six different structural systems to create diverse architectural landscapes. How did you ensure these structures matched the building’s functions? How do you interpret the idea of “structure as space”?

Liuxiandong is a semi-open underground space architectural design project. The ground level serves as a public green park, while the underground space is provided for small creative enterprises as offices and public service facilities. The main challenges in our design were the different sections between the north and south plots, ventilation, lighting, fire safety, and spatial comfort in the underground areas. We also aimed to make the design more interesting and diverse to provide future users with different experiences, making these two dimensions our primary focus.

While seeking inspiration, I noticed the richness under our office desk. The sense of space created by the distance between the table legs inspired our design. After multiple discussions with structural engineers, we transformed this inspiration into 29 different structures, eventually categorized into six different structural systems, including concrete and steel structures. Once the structural design was established, the diversity naturally followed.

I believe that sometimes form is not something to be pursued but rather a natural outcome. It stems from our observation and reinterpretation of daily life and spatial usage. The integration of space and structure and the response to various demands have always been our creative direction and philosophy.

The logic and aesthetics of the integration of architectural space and structure are reflected in many of our projects. We design many structures without additional decoration, and their mere existence brings many possibilities for space usage. In a certain sense, this is another way to ensure economic efficiency.

6.
What do you think about structure? How do you work with structural engineers?

Architectural structure is fundamentally related to gravity. To counteract gravity, “tension” arises. Architecture constantly challenges this tension to create extraordinary visual experiences, which is the core concept behind both the Fufa Glass Factory and the Nanqiao Academy. Through each project, we aim to challenge our perceptions of gravity whenever possible.

For instance, the Nanqiao Academy Comprehensive Building employs a “building block” approach. The “sharp corner” of the library and the “slope” of the tiered classroom form a flat stage. When building blocks stabilize, they naturally form a structure. This stability parallels architectural logic: once the logic stabilizes, the structure and system naturally emerge.

Shanghai Nanqiao Academy Comprehensive Building

shanghai nanqiao academy comprehensive building by node architecture urbanism

The Fufa Glass Factory Renovation reflects our perspective on history: history can be light. New structures can be placed on top of old ones, with the most crucial public space in between. Its public nature is built on the “hollow” space, allowing the public to pass through and appreciate the contrast between old and new architecture.

Architects need a general understanding of structural principles, but specific calculations require collaboration with structural engineers. This cooperation often leads to mutual inspiration, making the process enjoyable. This pleasure stems from creative passion and the challenges of exploring unknown fields together. Hence, we always strive to work with the most talented in various fields, bringing more joy and creativity to our architectural creations and spatial practices.

Urban Renewal

7.
What is your view on urban architectural renovation?

I believe every space should have rich layers, which can be either visible or invisible but are always perceptible. I don’t favor the “restore as before” approach because it conflicts with my view of history. To me, history is not merely the past but is always present, evolving from past to present. These historical layers are both future-oriented and rooted in the past.

For example, in the Renovation of Yongqing Neighborhood, I chose three sites that preserve some historical elements while introducing new structural approaches and uses. This concept of “layering” is also evident in our renovations of the DaChan Flour Mill, the Fufa Glass Factory, and other industrial buildings.

Public Landscape

8.
What “Conceptual Public landscape” means and what ideas your studio hopes to convey through this approach?

The “KU Landscape” is an exploration of reinterpreting life, history, and civilization, all within a public landscape context. The triangular concrete fold plates, though rigid, evoke the imagery of a river. We’ve incorporated a 10 cm water collection space into the folded walkway so that when it rains, it simulates a river flowing through the channel. This feature is particularly appealing and safe for children.

In essence, this is an experimental project that merges conceptual ideas with practical public landscape needs while also incorporating a critical perspective. We refer to this approach of translating ideas into architectural forms as “conceptual art landscape.”

9.
How do you view your design language? What is your perspective on form?

In recent years, I’ve become particularly interested in Chinese gardens, which may explain our fondness for “folded lines.” These lines change the way people perceive space and their understanding of time. For example, in Pingshan Terrace, the folded lines create shifting perspectives that resemble the experience of climbing a mountain. We aim for people to engage with the space gradually, turning four corners into distinct time periods. Each period reveals only one aspect of the landscape, fragmenting the experience of time. This relativity of time adds a layer of freedom to the space, and this reimagining of time and space influences our architectural language and form.

10.
How do you view the architectural form of bridges? And how important are details, like node design, in your projects?

Bridges, as fundamental infrastructure, address essential needs but also offer opportunities to experience different views. Each of our bridges is designed to provide a unique experience. For example, the Pedestrian Bridge of Pingshan High School enhances the viewing experience for parents picking up their children, while the Yong-chong River Water Infrastructure, beyond its functional role, offers varied vistas from different heights, adding a new dimension to its design. Each bridge involves distinct considerations.

Technically, bridges might not present significant challenges, often involving concrete or steel. However, different requirements can introduce additional spatial possibilities that need collaboration with structural engineers. To me, bridge design is a form of urbanism, where adding layers and temporal aspects to a simple connector requires meticulous attention to detail.

The “GBA Innovation Design Laboratory” examines the relationships between land, space, and various forms of life, focusing on how different aspects of life can be accommodated in an era of existing resources. Interdisciplinarity is a key theme in our work. I believe that new energy in any discipline comes from exchanges and interactions with other fields, which in turn enriches our architectural creativity and fosters change. Our laboratory seeks to provide a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together diverse individuals to transform knowledge into innovative spatial designs, ultimately sparking new ideas and shaping a new future.

Future and challenge

12.
What projects are NODE working on? What areas do you want to expand or challenge in the future?

Our current practice focuses on several key themes. One is “Re-Southern,” which emphasizes a return to regional practices. This means reconnecting with local context and adaptability while addressing contemporary comfort needs—an important challenge and direction for us. Another concept is “Balance is More,” which explores balancing regional characteristics with modern lifestyles, history with the future, and individual needs with the complexities of contemporary society. This is an open and evolving topic for us.

Our firm doesn’t adhere to a specific style. Each site, region, and culture presents new possibilities, which we see as a source of creativity. We aim to maintain an open approach to learning, research, and creation, allowing the future to become more tangible. The process is more important than the result, with the final outcome emerging naturally.

Contemporary art is also significant to me. We strive to participate in one or two art exhibitions annually. While architecture is often constrained, art offers a purer form of expression and experimentation. We sometimes create quick art projects to test our ideas, which keeps our thinking fresh.

Combining various creative methods helps sustain our creative drive, and I hope to engage more in artistic projects. The fusion of installation art with architectural space presents a compelling form of expression.
