南沙原创、都市实践、迹建筑和创盟国际联合参加香港中文大学（深圳）二期建筑方案竞赛设计，二期工程总建筑面积267180平方米，由7个地块组成——地块A 教学综合大楼，地块B国际学术交流中心，地块C 科研综合楼大楼，地块D 钟楼，地块E, F, G皆为书院。秉承港中大校区多样性、丰富性、通达性以及活力智慧、全人教育的场所精神，四个团队方案上各具特色，在已建成深圳校区一期的整体规划和建筑类型上，通过集群设计，尝试创作出更加多元别样“和而不同”的建筑类型，努力营造一个面向未来的共享生活与绿色智能的校园体验新场所；其中AB地块由都市实践设计，CD地块由迹·建筑设计，E地块由创盟设计，FG地块由南沙原创设计。

NODE, URBANUS,TAO and ARCHI-UNION joint as one team to participate in the Chinese University of Hong Kong(Shenzhen) Phase II schematic design competition. The total construction area of phase II is 267,180sqm, which consists of 7 blocks: site A teaching block, site B international academic exchange centre, site C research block, site D bell tower, site EFG are colleges. Four teams’ schemes embody the CUHK Shenzhen Campus’ education philosophy to promote energy, well-ness, knowledge and whole-person development, while base on the phase I planning and architectural typologies, so as to create an innovative campus. Site AB is designed by URBANUS, site CD is designed by TAO, site E is designed by ARCHI-UNION and site FG is designed by NODE.

The phase II lower campus consists of site A teaching block, site B international academic exchange centre, site C research block and site D bell tower. Site AB form new urban interface of the campus, the high-rise building of site C is the new icon overlooking the lower campus, bell tower with simplistic form at the node of campus axes.

公共空间设计策略 | Public Space Design Strategy
New entrance complex of lower campus is designed with a goal to draw students from all over the campus to its social spaces and teaching facilities. It is positioned on the campus edge, establishing a new relationship with the city. New university gate is formed marking its new presence in the neighborhood.

The Teaching Block is linked to the Academic Exchange Centre through the central plaza, the main outdoor space of the complex. The shape of valley is taken as starting point for plaza design. It provides a number of informal learning and social spaces with open air seating along different heights. It is designed as “crossroads” marking its role as a linkage in two directions, between City and University as well as the link between programs of two buildings. It also functions as a infrastructural cross – a place for sharing ideas, debate and interaction.

A地块：教学综合大楼 | Site A: Teaching Block
The horizontally elongated structure of the teaching block accommodates new lecture halls, classrooms, seminar rooms, faculty as well as administrative offices. The floating sensation is felt from central axis plaza due to parts of the building volume which projects in and out from the second floor upwards. Series of terraces and shaded ground floor spaces are created to encourage interaction among different departments and disciplines. The Valley Plaza penetrates deeply into the teaching block and brings students to their classrooms and seminar rooms on upper floors. It extends further in and up with the network of terraces and bridges.

Modular system is employed as main organizing principle to ensure structural efficiency and future flexibility of space. Four different profiles of the teaching bars are proposed and aligned in sequence with strong direction perpendicular to central axis of the lower campus. First three floors of each of the bars are merged together within public podium ensuring easy circulation between different departments and easy access from the central axis. On the third floor another inter-link is proposed connecting four atriums together into one continuous outdoor void.

B地块：国际学术交流中心 | Site B: International Academic Exchange Centre
The Academic Exchange Centre on the other side of central axis forms the new gate for the lower campus with teaching block. Event spaces are integrated with a linear layout underneath the slope, and therefore the most direct access from the central axis to each of the theatres is provided. The valley plaza brings people up to the big green terrace on the third floor. They together create an outdoor meeting place for public communication and academic exchange. Administration offices are placed in the floating upper volume on the slope, with more private carved-out balconies.

Site C: Research Block
Architects: Trace Architecture Office
Site C is composed of a high-rise laboratory building and a semi-underground event space. The large-span concrete structure forms the roof of the event space. A new platform is created, surrounded by greenery, through which one can view afar.

The lab building is 100 m high. Its south side faces the platform, enjoying a vast view overlooking the campus; its north side faces mountain, quiet and peaceful, facilitating academic research. The transparency of first floor lets nature penetrate and extend through lobby. The lab building is composed of two different volumes – thin & long two-story volume and wide & short one-story volume. The stacking of these volumes forms quiet and comfortable terraces, allowing views towards campus and mountains. The shafts on north facade are both programmatic and iconic elements corresponding to lab need. Offset volumes and shafts are perpendicular to each other, indicating the rational personality of the lab building.

The event space is 3m below ground level, with high windows on all sides. The roof is spanned by large concrete beams, supported by V-shaped columns on four sides. The heavy roof is conceived as a floating volume above the event hall. This space can host university activities like ceremonies, exams, etc., and can transform into indoor stadium for sports activities.

There are two types of standard floor plans for labs. One fits to thin and the other to wide volumes. A corridor in the middle divides each floor into north and south zones. The north zone of each floor is a column-less large space (>500 sqm), which enables flexible partitioning of labs. Two-story volume also provides possibility for an 8 m high lab.

Site D: Bell Tower
The concept of Site D is to improve circulation system in campus. To the west of the University Mall, a ramp leads the public to an elevated platform while cars go underneath it, separating pedestrians and vehicles. University South gate is connected to the platform by a grand public stair. Site C is situated at the west end of the platform, while the other end leads to Shaw College in east side of the campus.

A simple sculptural bell tower marks the end of the University Mall. Pedestrians can enter it from the elevated platform to have a nice view of the overall campus.

Located on the upper campus, phase I colleges are block typology. The project is designed to embody the tradition of the college while emphasizing the human, individualized and sharing features. With due respect to the topography and terrain of the site, we intend to create comfortable, open, green and convenient college environment and living space.

Site E: College E

The E-block college is located on the south side of Upper Campus. Through multi-dimensional publicity, multi-level greening and multi-divisional sharing, it is virtualized and realizes the living, learning and sports space for future college life.

The four theme courtyards in the layout are divided into the ball plaza, the skate plaza, the music plaza and the reading plaza for a versatile spatial experience. The second floor of the cross skybridge connects the E-block college and the surrounding college space, green space and sports space.

The college uses green building design and robotic fabrication techniques to optimize building ventilation through a vertical green atrium. A prefabricated rate of up to 70% is achieved with prefabricated PC construction system.

Site F&G: College F&G
Located on a piece of flat land at the north slope of upper campus, the plots F and G faces Yanlong Avenue on the east and neighbors the faculty dorm building on the west. With a distant view of middle campus, it overlooks the upper campus college, enjoying an attractive and lush environment.

Site F&G are located between the faculty living compound in the hill and the service area and students’ dorm area at the hill foot. Currently the upper campus already has some detached or semi-detached academies or dorm buildings. So how to create a recognizable and individualized academy while realizing convenient connection between hill foot and the hill, and whether the academies in site F&G could realize the interconnection of nature, community and knowledge and serve as a systematic interconnection and accessibility “infrastructure” remain the biggest challenge of the project.

“顺势而为，依山而建”， 保留了坡地的植被，在现状台地上设置多层面（multi-layers）水平和垂直格局。建筑上选择了有良好通风采光和景观视线的内庭塔楼宿舍类型，由男生、女生和混合宿舍三栋一组形成一个书院，加上一栋博士楼，形成7栋楼3个组团的格局， 组团之间由不同的分级共享功能的两层裙楼“自由流通自由组合”在一起，屋顶是两个书院和博士楼共享的室外运动和休闲花园。
Our design follow the topography and hill at the site. We retain the vegetation on the slopes and develop a multi-layer horizontal and perpendicular layout on the existing terraces. Architecturally, we plan the dorms into tower buildings with inner courtyards to ensure ventilation, lighting and views. Two dorm buildings respectively for male and female students and a mixed dorm building jointly form a academy. Together with a doctoral building, we plan seven buildings of three clusters on the site. The clusters are connected via two-level podiums of shared functions to realize free flowing and free combination. On rooftops we plan outdoor sports and leisure gardens shared by the two academies and the doctoral building.
Such a planning layout not only connects different living areas in the hill and at the hill foot, but also create an open, relaxing, accessible and flexible public spaces. It does not block the views of the faculty dorm building, but instead forms an open, shared and accessible community interface. The horizontal continuity on the south helps form a wide-angle viewing interface which naturally integrates with the nature and the upper campus.

For each U-shaped dorm tower, we provide a balcony for each dorm room in view of the orientation and the characteristics of the college to serve as sunshade buffer. The dorm rooms are connected via a single inner corridor, and shared areas are provided in the public traffic area to enhance the interaction between students. Public activity areas are planned on the roof in consideration of the required floor height of the stairwells and plumbing rooms. These areas, together with the full-height atrium, facilitate the ventilation, heat insulation and lighting. As required by the design brief and academy management, the public functional spaces and the service center of the academy are provided at the shared interface of the two-level podium, where various facilities and services are offered in transparent and flexible spaces.
