Who is your favorite Architect and why?

I really appreciate some recent works of young Japanese architects, such as Sou Fujimoto, Junya Nishigami, Atelier Bow-Wow and their predecessors SANAA, Toyo Ito, etc. I like the oriental artistic conception in their design. Growing up with my grandfather who is a traditional Chinese doctor, I was deeply influenced by traditional oriental philosophy such as Confucianism, Taoism and Zen. Japanese architects not only inherited traditional culture but also developed it into new levels. I hope there could be more Chinese architects focusing on traditional culture which was serious damaged forty years ago, especially in this impetuous age.

What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?

They pay more attention to aesthetic education and practical skills.

What have you gained during the MAD internship?

Modeling and rendering skills, but the most important would be new friends I met, they broadened my perspective of architecture and the world. The most memorable is young people from different countries always having dinner in the office talking and laughing like a family.

What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Any suggestion?

From the macro perspective of city, most cities are suffering the problems caused by rapid Urban Sprawl, natural suburb landscape are disappearing, long distance commute and unwalkable space encourages car dependency, which would bring more social problems, say, rich-poor divide, more crime, air pollution (think about the serious haze pollution this year which has lasted almost 5 months in China). On the other hand, in the old town development, most old streets and historic buildings are being rudely demolished; slums are being replaced by luxury buildings, while poor people have to move to other slums.

From the micro perspective of architecture, the stream of traditional Chinese wooden building system, which has thousands years of history, is almost drying up at this booming time. All kinds of regional tectonic cultures are suffering irreversible damages. It’s not only a shame of Chinese, but also huge losses of the diversity of human cultural heritage.

Architecture, as one of the most expensive human activities, is a reflection of society. Problems mentioned above are also fails of our impetuous society. We need to wake more people up to notice those problems and change the mind of society. In this exciting information age, I think Internet might be an effective catalyst of Chinese Enlightenment. In the last year, Internet has already played significant role in promoting social justice and expanding supervision of power. Let’s say gooood, isn’t it a good platform of spreading ideas?

What is your dream?

Seclusion in mountain or forest. Immersing myself in nature and living a simple life, Just like what was described in the poems of Tao Qian and the book WALDEN written by Henry Thoreau .

What is your dream project?

A simple wooden house for seclusion, being designed and built all by myself.

Amongst the works in your portfolio, which one is your favorite? Why?

They all seem unsatisfactory now, although I felt pretty good when I was doing them. If I have to choose
one, I would prefer the thesis project, which is relatively mature amongst other works.

Thesis/ Urban Planning Exhibition Hall

With the attitude of evading problems in the urbanization and boasting credit, authority directed this propaganda project, ironically, to celebrating their achievements. You could find similar projects in most cities in China. Under this background, the main issue of the thesis is how to convert the propaganda tool into comfortable urban public space which could truly serve citizens.

Site located in the new government office district in the suburb where natural landscape was replaced by majestic squares and buildings, lacking vitalities. So this design preserved last piece of natural terrain and plants within the site, lifted building showing a modest gesture to environment. Serpentine narrow pavilion extend between original huge trees, not only as an entrance of the building, but also space for people to coexist with trees, birds, sunshine and each other.

Theater Design

The mirror wall inserted in the theater, splitting the building into two parts with different programs, creates series of virtual images juxtaposing with real images inside and outside the building. Lifting certain parts of the slab give more open space to the crowded urban environment. Digital skills are used in the design process of audience hall, to achieve satisfactory visual and audio effects.

Urban Design/ Downtown Renovation

Although enjoying thousands years of history, Beizheng Street area still reduced to a slum area in the rapid urbanizing of Changsha city. Authority wants to eliminate the stain of city by changing it into a retail district; a lot of historic buildings are facing danger of demolition. Based on interviews with residents, we tried to explore a wide range of spontaneous participation in the renovation, instead of arbitrary demolition and construction.
