Appreciation towards Izaskun Chinchilla for providing the following description:
Fortuny Auditorium is located in a building with strong 19th Century typology, and also celebrates the first years of the twentieth century. The intervention adopts elements and inspirations from the last decades of the 19th century, when they were built and the streets and most of the buildings in the neighborhood. It also tries to celebrate and pay homage to the presence of the most illustrious of its neighbors: the Prado Museum. The painting by Mariano Fortuny, one of the great artists of the 19th century that the Museum houses, has influenced the selection of materials and the conception of space.
Mariano Fortuny
These paintings embody many of the aesthetic preferences of the nineteenth and the romantic repertoire: the taste for ruin, the orientalist inspiration, the interest in life forms that denoted freedom, the cultural consideration of travel. The space tries to update this aesthetic and cultural repertoire in the old goal of Antonio Maura 8. The aesthetic fascination for ruinous places, inhabited with provisional means, has a new meaning and a new validity today.

In this transformation, everything was renewed through covering and redoing, until the interior, and sometimes the exterior, seems entirely new and coming from a single era. The Fortuny paintings helped the designers to discover the beauty of the spaces where the deteriorated coexists with the provisional. This is a message of great relevance and relevance to current architecture and interior design. The deteriorated can, in fact, be solemn, collective and be full of memory, while the provisional can become a sign of freedom, through which we can reimagine our way of life every day.

“We understand rehabilitation as an exercise of naturalness and imagination. We try to make patches and repairs look beautiful and do not need to be hidden. We combine this austerity with large doses of visual imagination, inviting visitors to sit inside a wild garden, in an abandoned ruin, listening to delicious music even though we are in the old goal of Antonio Maura.” -from the architects
