Brave New Axis

Spyridon Loukidis, Markos Georgios Sakellion, Georgios Thalassinos
National Technical University of Athens. School of Architecture.
Athens (Greece)

This is a brave proposal that understands and integrates the inherent complexity of the city through a systemic approach that spans the large urban scale and reaches down to the definition of domestic elements, such as a room within a collective housing unit. Brave New Axis is therefore a multiscalar proposal that seeks to transcend the 19thcentury notion of the urban axis, applied here to the city of Athens, through a series of interventions conceived as meeting grounds along a continuous path. The Garden, the Labyrinth, the Forum, the Circle, and the Lunaparking are new places of belonging for inhabitants, articulating a reimagined public space born from the transformation of existing buildings and spaces. This is a project that infiltrates the existing urban and social fabric of the city to breathe new life into it through a renewed approach to public space as a vehicle for social cohesion. The jury wishes to highlight the clarity and relevance of the project in relation to the site in which it operates, working with the existing fabric to create a sequence of interconnected public spaces with diverse programmes that equip the heart of the city.

Forest & Phoenix

Carolina von Hammerstein, Vera Kellmann
Technical University of Berlin. Faculty VI, Planning, Building and Environment – Institute for Architecture.
Berlin (Germany)

Forest & Phoenix presents a compelling architectural response to the growing challenge of forest fires. It demonstrates a strong conceptual foundation by framing architecture as a mediator between disciplines and as a catalyst for collective awareness and action. Rather than offering a purely technical solution, the project adopts a holistic, multidisciplinary perspective, integrating knowledge from forestry, science, and community engagement. Its reinterpretation of the planned wildfire management centre in Brandenburg introduces hybrid infrastructures that blend public and operational functions, encouraging interaction and visibility across scales. The proposal is particularly strong in its attention to materiality. The reuse of charred wood becomes both a symbolic and practical gesture, addressing sustainability and circular resource use in a meaningful way. This approach reflects a sensitivity to the environmental context and a commitment to ecological responsibility.

Hotel Interim

Andreas Stanzel
Bauhaus-Universitaet Weimar. Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism.
Weimar (Germany)

Hotel Interim is a plea against demolition as a contemporary practice applied to conventional buildings that are in perfect condition. The project deals with and works on the real case of a hotel in the German city of Halle, unused in its last years but carefully maintained. It is a highly delicate and evocative project that, through its multidisciplinary format, has the capacity to raise awareness and propose architectural practices of transformation and reuse as alternatives to demolition. It also manages to speak about a model of the city through the treatment of a single architectural piece. The jury highlights the high level of maturity demonstrated by its author, due to the profound understanding and communicative ability evoked by the project.

Poolside Politics

James Langlois
University of Westminster. School of Architecture and Cities.
London (United Kingdom)

The jury would like to highlight how complete and detailed this project is, addressing both the social and material dimensions of the site. It is a project with the ambition to serve as an example that could be extrapolated and applied as a model for the recovery of similar places in the area, acting as a tool for collective empowerment and advocacy. Poolside Politics reclaims the original project’s public vocation by adding a collective dimension. The proposal thus goes beyond the original recreational use, incorporating a productive, cultural, residential, and agricultural programme as a new driving force for life in the area. The jury commends the material approach and high level of technical development; special attention is given to the treatment of the original building’s materiality—concrete—while also incorporating reuse strategies through materials sourced from other abandoned buildings.

Collective Reflections on the Winning Projects

The jury emphasized that the selected projects reflect a generation of architects attuned to the complexity of contemporary society. These works transcend conventional architectural practices, addressing topics like urban fragmentation, climate resilience, interim reuse, and community-driven design: Brave New Axis reconfigures Athens’ historical urban grid, creating new spatial connections that promote inclusivity and mobility. Forest & Phoenix imagines hybrid infrastructures to combat and prevent forest fires, emphasizing ecology and public space. Hotel Interim demonstrates the potential of temporary use and transformation, turning a condemned hotel into a learning hub.Poolside Politics reclaims an abandoned municipal pool in Marseille as a symbol of civic empowerment and radical municipalism. Together, these projects signal a shift towards architectural practices grounded in social engagement, environmental responsibility, and collective action.
