这一系列雕塑灵感来自动物群体面对应急情况的自组织行为，比如白蚁群，鱼群，鸟群，蝗虫群。这些充满魅力又让人害怕的现象亦真亦幻，吸引着人们。雕塑采用了意外的材料产生了新的视觉冲
击，对这类日常事务进行了全新的诠释。

Thomas Jackson的作品必不可少的需要使用到Photoshop，但是这个技术并不是创作的关键，创作的关键还是摄像机带来的实时感，后期的修饰只是配角。

 

EMERGENT BEHAVIOR

The hovering sculptures featured in this ongoing series of photographs are inspired byself-organizing, “emergent” systems in nature such as termite mounds, swarming locusts,schooling fish and flocking birds. The images attempt to tap the mixture of fear andfascination that those phenomena tend to evoke, while creating an uneasy interplaybetween the natural and the manufactured and the real and the imaginary. At the sametime, each image is an experiment in juxtaposition. By constructing the sculptures fromunexpected materials and placing where they seem least to belong, I aim to tweak themargins of our visual vocabulary, and to invite fresh interpretations of everydaythings.

I have struggled with the role of Photoshop in my work. I can’t make my images withoutit, yet I don’t really want it to be an integral part of my creative process. So I’veset up some rules of the road for myself, and I’ve stuck to them while creating all myrecent images. Basically I want the images to be as “in camera” as possible, soinstead of employing PS to composite or more things around, I simply use it to removeelements I don’t want to be there. The sculpture in this image (175 glow sticksattached to a wire armature) is real, and it was photographed on the beach inGreenport, NY. I simply used PS to remove the support that was holding the thing up,and to make a few other minor tweaks. So on the spectrum between “retouched image”and “real time image”, I’ve strived to make it closer to the latter.
