DUAL LAND – Chapter by FABERHAMA (Paola Amabile and Alberto Fabbian)
The project is the first edition of Dual Land, with which we want to encourage the deployment of elements of innovation concerning the production of objects and favore the creation of new relations and collaborations between different territories and cultures, thanks to the process of knowledge transferring between all actors involved.
The outcomes represent the merging of traditional glassblowing technique with digital metal 3D printing.
The research draws inspiration from forgotten objects and tools belonging to maritime culture related to the Zuiderzee region, The Netherlands, and the Venetian area, Italy.

Abstract
Paola Amabile and Alberto Fabbian (Faberhama) created the Dual Land project, which aims to encourage the deployment of elements of innovation concerning the production of objects, through the integration of new opportunities offered by digital technologies with traditional methods. The project contributes to create new relations and fruitful collaborations thanks to the process of knowledge transferring and exchanging between all partners involved.
Faberhama presents a variety of lighting objects which reflect technical and emotional possibilities coming from the merging of taditional glassblowing technique with modern metal 3D printing, thereby experimenting new applications of digital fabrication in crafts through a research approach.
Dual Land – Chapter I draws inspiration from forgotten objects and tools belonging to the maritime culture related to the Zuiderzee region and the Venetian area. As a starting point for our research, the traditional lantern has offered a fertile ground to merge innovative 3d metal technology and glass craft techniques in a single object. The lantern, traditionally made of blown glass and metal, has always played an essential role in the maritime daily life activities, lighting the way out of the dark, by helping people determine their locations and to avoid potential dangers.
The Zuiderzee Museum represents a vast repository of knowledge and a valuable source of inspiration and intuitions for the creation of the collection. Faberhama has reinterpreted some geometries found in the Zuiderzee Museum objects and translated them by using digital technologies, in order to create new glass forming tools and to experiment new processes.
Selective Laser Melting (SLM) made the creation of structures possible which couldn’t have been produced with traditional production methods such as milling, lathing, or drilling. These metal parts have been used to increase the possibilities for experimentation in blowinglass during the realisation of the collection.
Faberhama represents the enriching collaboration between Paola Amabile and Alberto Fabbian, Italian designers based in Amsterdam. They share their interest in creating projects as containers of knowledge through a continuous dialogue with different identities embracing human, cultural and territorial values.
Faberhama’s creations develop through an investigation on possible interactions between materials and processing techniques, with the aim of creating a contemporary object, celebrating diversity and expressing a balance between innovation and tradition.
