From Dandong Road to Weinan South Road, a section of nearly one kilometer in length, with Yangshupu Port as the core, gathers many factories, among which the Shanghai Chemical Plant occupies the largest area. The Shanghai Chemical Plant was originally the Minghua Sugar Factory opened by Japanese businessmen in 1924. Designed by Okano Architects, the plant underwent multiple construction and renovation in the 1930s and 1980s, and was moved out in 2010. During the demolition process, a 2-storey building added to the south of the refined sugar warehouse was preserved — the existing factory building at 1500 Yangshupu Road. It stands quietly on the bank of the Huangpu River with the traces of time and the thickness of history of nearly one hundred years.

Today, the remaining two-storey building occupies a quarter of the original Minghua Sugar Warehouse, while the rest was demolished due to its low historical value and disordered shape. As a result, the interface between the east and north of the building, as the internal partition wall of the original workshop, is exposed to outdoor air for the first time after many years of closure: they are like “breathing ports” between the building and the surrounding environment, eagerly inhaling the fresh air coming from the bank of the Huangpu River mixed with the fragrance of grass. The interface of the south and west side of the building still retains the original exterior wall shape and system, and the window holes of different shapes and sizes are distributed on the wall, showing the trace of the superposition of time and space.

In the area where Minghua Sugar Factory is located, the original flood control wall runs between the wharf and the rear factory area, blocking the connection between the urban space and the water bank with a tall and thick attitude. In order to open the precious waterfront space to the city residents, we withdrew the secondary flood control wall and hid it in the continuous grassy slope. The elevation of the first floor on the east side of the building is low, so we set the arc retaining wall to connect with the grassy slope, forming a positive attitude of compatibility between indoor and outdoor space after the reconstruction of the landscape.

As a “breathing outlet”, the east and north sides of the two floors are equipped with floor-to-ceiling glass Windows, which can fully display the original building’s internal characteristic components such as column foot and axilla, light steel truss, and optimize the interaction between the building and the surrounding environment. At the same time, on the roof terrace, which serves as the “fifth open interface”, people can enjoy the sunlight pouring down, look out over the sparkling river and witness the transformation of the revitalized old building into a fluid and transparent posture, watching between the water bank and the city.

The interface of the west and south sides of the building adopts the reconstruction method of “repairing the old as the old” : while retaining the thick reinforced concrete wall of the original warehouse in the 1930s, the wooden frame of the Windows and doors on the south side and the fan on the west side with historical characteristics were carefully restored. The northern interface of the building forms a cantilevered gray space after the removal of the original partition wall, and the floor-to-ceiling glass Windows are lightly and low-key hidden in the rear, revealing a unique spatial section. To enhance its character, a light cable staircase was placed in place of the original internal staircase, leading all the way to the roof of the “floating” pedestrian corridor, creating a public terrace looking out over the river.

The new roof is made of satin anodized alumina, which is detached from the top of the existing building walls and floats above the roof of the existing roof after structural reinforcement. The lighting well is set in combination with the original ventilation shaft on the roof to improve the lighting on the ground floor. Under the contrast of old and new, the building form is full of tension. This is not a single historical retrospective, but a juxtaposition of “old” and “new” across many eras.
