Who is your favourite architect? Why?

I don’t have a favorite architect, since almost every architect I know have few pieces of work that I admire or I could find to learn something from. I once have read an article about Rem Koolhaas’ so-called ‘Stacking Diagram’ which summarizing his design strategy – use the program as the starting point then playing with these program like toy bricks, and eventually applied various fa?ade to finish the building. This ‘stacking diagram’, developed by Rem Koolhaas in the 90th, now have became the inspiration source for his former employees/partners (BIG, MVRDV, REX, etc.). Despite from personal like, a numbers of new great architecture/architects have been brought to the world from the Spiritual Father/Godfather Rem Koolhaas, I think this is really a great thing. Also, I think in China, MAD is acting the role as OMA to the world.

What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?

Fortunately it is relatively free to choose the teaching units. We have 5 different styled teaching units. Some are eco-based, and some are more mechanism, and tutors always encourage student to explore new techniques and skills. One major characteristics of British architecture education is that you only take 3 years to get a Bachelor degree. For the architecture, I think it is a little bit too short for me. Especially as I enter the school without any knowledge background of design, and even just start to have some real thinking about architecture in half year ago, then suddenly I have
graduated. I frequently feel lack of skills/knowledge/experience. In MAD, I always learn new things from different people.

What have you gained during the MAD internship?

I think the most valuable stuff is the thought of Shanshui City. I would like to research and dedicate to the development of this thought in my future study / career practice. It is really exciting if you imagine in the future the city will appears in a look that incorporate the traditional Chinese landscape aesthetic. Actually, it is sort of Chinese version of succeeding from Le Corbusier’s dreamy Radiant City. Even though it is tough to take these thought into practice, for instance the resistance form client’s consideration of budget, I would believe that things are getting better, one example is nowadays increasing numbers of clients dare to work with MAD, and give them freedom to design, thus in a few years, we probably can see some built project using the philosophy of Shanshui City.

What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment?Any suggestion?

There are many of the young architects who just entered this field, but unfortunately trapped by various pressures from life, they just do architecture for living instead of something for the future and have no time to learn and accept new stuff or even just thinking about life (I always thought design is very emotional and strong linked to personal growth). This is horrible and is what I want to avoid on myself. However, there’s no one to blame about, people have to do something for living.

What is your dream?

I wish I could be the client of my own life, not only for the architecture career but also my life.

What would you do if you were not an architect?

I have two enthusiasms rather long ago before I enter the architecture school: the 1st is music, I even have learnt Piano for 7 years, even though it is proved that I’m not particularly good at it; the 2nd is that I’m a car-fan/petrol-head/gear-head. When I was younger, I wished I could become a musical producer or car engineer, but I finally entered the architecture school.

What is your dream project?

No matter what function is it, My dream project should have everyone-can-use landscape embedded. I was grown up from a sub-urban area, the memories about playing with the small size wildlife is essential for me. I wish the future city kids will not loss this part of memories just because of they are living in the city.

What is your favorite project in your portfolio? Why?

I haven’t done many projects so far, and currently my favourite is the last thesis project. When I did the site research, I found that the local children are fond of outdoor playing. However, many lawn ground or forests in between apartment blocks, which was children’s scope to the nature/wildlife, now have been bought by real estate developer to build new apartment blocks. So I decided to design a tall building only for landscape/urban wildlife, and family guys get into this building just to get a scope of nature or purely relaxation purposed. This project almost has no practicability at all, but I’m glad it is my exploration for the better future city.

Building the future in Bromley-by-bow, London

Bromley-by-bow is a part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London. To the north is Bow, and to the south are Poplar and Blackwall. The area is bisected north to south by the Blackwall tunnel Approach Road (A12) and the boundary of the area to the east is the River Lea and the London Borough of Newham.

Like much of East London, however, Bromley-by-bow suffered extensive bombing damage during World War II, and then suffered again from under-investment.

Bromley-by-bow has been a focal point for immigration for centuries, but new arrivals found few opportunities for integration with the wider population and limited support available. This socially excluded community experiences high levels of unemployment, low incomes, poor health and overcrowded and substandard housing.

In addition, the local area is bordered by two major roads and two railway lines. This exacerbates the feelings of isolation created by poverty and until recently the area attracted few regeneration activities. As a consequence, Bromley-by-bow remains one of the most deprived wards in the UK.

P2-Event Pavilion

Project aims: First of all is to take advantage of this empty square and build public space to let people stay and meet together; Secondly build as kind of exhibition or performance or theatre to enrich the function of the commercial walk; Then, due to the site overall position, my project will be the landmark at one of the entrance to the Bromley-by-bow. In one word, my project strengthens the site boundary through its multifunction and makes the site a better social space.

P3-Future cityscape (片尾有动画)

In the nearly future, the development of city has been expanded. And the cities themselves become overcrowded by high-rise residential or commercial buildings. The city greenery becomes less and less. The organ wildlife is no longer live within the city. The children especially who grow up in the urban area have no chance to get in touch with wildlife and only see them on documentary. My project explored the possibility of more efficient urban landscape as well as wildlife habitats in this pressing future trend.
