“Tower of Babylon” was designed and built by 14 students of the architecture department of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. The Pavilion consists of 1400 black fruit boxes and 30 white boxes, bundled with nylon strips. It was erected in only 6 nights and 2 afternoons by the students, the whole budget is controlled under 1000 US Dollars.

The essence of Babel is not a “tower”, but the place for communication. Therefore the Pavilion will be built in the past Commercial Street as the continuation of such activities in another sense.

We use plastic fruit boxes as build material, which can be easily found around the fruit market and will also be recycled after being dismantled. In this season most boxes are black boxes for pineapple and watermelon. Only a few white boxes for orange could be found in the market. The color of the pavilion displayed the situation of the fruit market.

Form: The form came from the nature of the fruit box. Fruit box is not suitable for tension. So arch shape is consistent with this feature. Using arch as the basic unit to develop a system that adapts itself very well to different sites and terrains.

Nylon strip is ideal to make the flexible node, that allows the error and distortion. And it will also not too strong to harm the plastic boxes.

 

解题：

竞赛要求是以“巴比伦塔”为概念，要传达出可持续发展的思想。我们不认为巴比伦塔就要造塔，而可以是一个不同的人可以交流并发生活动的地方。

事件：

交大原本有一条商业街，后来因为一些原因拆除了，作为一个珍贵的记忆，现在我们以新的形式恢复出来，并赋予新的内涵。

材料：

我们使用水果筐这种常见的“成品材料”。它在水果商那里作为容器来使用，不用的时候又会给回收站回收，而且价格相对便宜。我们这样可以把水果筐作为建造材料，建造过程中不损坏，拆了之后完好无损继续给水果商使用，实现可持续发展的理念。不同种类的筐子对应不同的水果，不同的水果又对应不同的季节。这个季节主要是装菠萝和西瓜的黑色水果筐，盛放砂糖橘的白色水果筐很难找到。

形式：

形式来源于水果筐的特性。水果筐适合受压，不适合受拉。拱的形态非常符合这种特性。然后以拱为基本单元，发展出一套能够随基地、地形不同而随意变化的形态。

节点：

节点换过很多次，最终选择了方便建造而且价格低廉的白色绳套。这种柔性的节点可以方便调节和允许一定的变形。

费用：水果筐每个4元，回收价格不到2元，白色绳套一包18元，总预算控制在1000美金之内。
