白教堂位于原广东工业化造纸厂旧体建筑群内，是一座改革开放初期的单层厂房建筑。LAD（里德）设计机构在设计前对教堂的现代社会定位进行再思考，项目在保留旧建筑主体的前提下，为其赋予了新定义。白教堂突破了传统教堂建筑泾渭分明的古典手法，极简提取其宗教文化元素，强调现代主义建筑的型态。而做为精神性标志的建筑物，这是一处贴合大众需求的公共空间：人们精神的庇护地。

White Church is a single-floor factory building located in the old style architectural complex of the original industrial paper mill, established at the early stage after the reform and opening-up. LAD Design Agency makes secondary consideration of the positioning of the church in the modern society, and defines it otherwise while reserving the main body of the old building. White Church makes break through of the classical approaches of the traditional church construction, extracts the elements of its religious culture, and emphasizes the pattern of modern architecture. And as a spiritual symbol of the building, it is a public shelter for human spirit, in accordance with the public demand.

每座城市都需要一处安宁、明朗、祥和的地方| Every city needs a peaceful and bright place.

LAD（里德）设计机构就所在城市做人口结构以及精神文化背景的调研中发现，时代的浮躁性致使无论是否为信徒，都希望有一处使获得安宁、明朗、祥和的空间。LAD（里德）设计机构顺势规划了这座白教堂，做为精神性标志的城市空间。

During the investigation of the demographic structure and spiritual culture background of the city, LAD Design Agency found that in the blundering era, everyone hopes to find a peaceful and bright space, whether the person is a believer or not. Based on the survey, LAD Design Agency planed the White Church, to serve as a spiritual symbol of the city.

设计师对委托方经济成本考虑及对本土文化的眷顾，使教堂在保留其原有建筑的基础上改造成一个符合现代建筑语言的城市空间。设计师从旧厂房建筑原有不对称性得到灵感，在将原有空间破坏，加入柱和钢结构，改造成对称的内部结构。改造的主要介入是使建筑获得合理的功能定义以及呈现新的建筑美学。教堂的主要空间布置采用一幢为独立主教堂，一幢为多功能的活动用房及接待组合而成的综合区域，在功能上将两个不同需求空间完全分离，使之有独立操作的自由。

Out of considerations of the economic costs of the client and the local culture, the stylist transforms the church into an urban space with modern features with the preservation of the original building. Inspired by the original asymmetry of the old architecture, the stylist destroyed the original space by adding in columns and steel structure, to form a symmetrical internal structure. The main change lies in endowing the building with reasonable functions and new architectural aesthetics. The main spatial arrangement of the church is that one building is set as the independent main church and the other building is set as a comprehensive area composed of multi-functional space for activities and reception, which are totally separated functionally, allowing independent operation.

白色极简的表达让人纯粹地感知光线的存在
White and extreme simplicity expression letting people perceive the existence of light purely.

1978当代教堂使用了大面积无干扰的白色，视野在空间脱离喧嚣。白色使人增强对空间的结构感和有序感，它允许光的表演，让光沈浸在空间的角落，“因此我们可以最纯粹最基本地感知到光线的存在”。

In 1978, the contemporary church adopted undisturbed white for a large area, to offer a peace space visually. White enhances people’s sense of structure and order, allowing the light to perform, and set in the corners of the space, “so that we can perceive the existence of light in the purest and most basic way.”

拱券 Arch

结构的功能不仅仅是结构| The function of the structure is not just structure

中殿一组由支柱支撑的拱券，分开了中殿和侧廊。它从结构中产生，又精心制作结构。没有附加于建筑的赘述、无中生有的变化，轻灵通透的建筑本身是连续流通的空间。拱券为块状料砌成的跨空砌体。外形为圆弧状，由于各种建筑类型的不同，拱券的形式略有变化。拱券不但有文化意义上的美学，更具良好的承重特性。

There is an arch in the first group of nave, dividing the nave and the aisle. It is generated from the structure, as well as makes the structure elaborately. Without unnecessary additions or deliberate changes, the brisk and transparent building itself is a space with continuous flow. Arch is a across-sky brickwork built with block materials. It is arc-shaped,with slight changes along with different types of buildings. Arch is not only aesthetic in the cultural sense, but also bears weight.

用铁艺装置述说循序渐进的静谧|Use iron devices to interpret the gradual quiet.

设计师没有选择传统教堂常见的严谨装饰花纹，选择了铁艺装置：它以几何的曲线，使空间更具有生命力。材料的坚实质感、深沈的铁质原色，与白色空间形成对比，于人思绪可得到活跃的轻松。由等候厅进入空间，铁艺装置井然的陈列式也是人流动线设计的功臣，对称的秩序美使人循序渐进感受静谧。

Rather than decorative patterns commonly seen in the traditional church, the stylists chose iron device, to make the space has greater vitality with the geometric curve. Materials of solid texture and deep iron color form sharp contrast with the white space, making people’s thinking active and relaxed. When entering into the space from the waiting room, people feel inner quiet in the symmetrical beauty, with moving-line design of orderly display of iron art.

光是建筑的灵魂而这里拥有它的宁静 | Light is the soul of architecture, And its quite rests here.

空间是建筑的实质，而光是建筑空间的灵魂。在教堂的设计中，光可以让我们回到本源。为不过多的破坏原建筑体，白教堂通过人工照明来实现光均匀分布以展现安静平和，同时，作为空间的序列导向去指引人流路线，以此形成一个完整的空间体系，使整个建筑环境具有连贯的整体感。视觉感知的空间是光与实体相互作用的结果，光与实体存在着对应性。

Space is the essence of architecture, while light is the soul of architectural space. In the design of the church, light allows us to return to the origin. Destroying original building is rarely seen. White Church achieves uniform distribution of light through artificial lighting to show quiet and peace, while serving as a spatial sequence to guide the stream of people, to form a complete space system, and make the entire building environment has a sense of consistent wholeness. Visual perception of the space is the result of interaction between light and the entity, the light and the entity facilitate mutual existence.

顶部的人工照明竖向式的光芒，是对神的期盼，也是对安宁的归属感。光根据人的精神意念抽象出来，使其趋向神性，光行使了反映特定精神内涵的象征功能：一种善的隐喻，归于神的荣耀。

Vertical rays of light at the top by artificial lighting represents the expectation for God,which also brings a sense of belonging to the tranquility. Light is abstracted according to the spiritual idea of the human being, to be led to divinity. Light exercises a symbolic function that reflects a specific spiritual connotation: a metaphor of good, belonging to the glory of God

纵观教堂建筑的历史和现状，除了神学的影响力，更多反映人们对精神力量的期盼。相较其他公共建筑类型，教堂建筑需同时代背景、地域特征相协调，否则会产生不平衡感，失去建筑本身所强调的定义。

Throughout the history and status quo of the church architecture, in addition to the influence of theology, it is more of a reflection of people’s expectations of spiritual strength. Compared with other types of public buildings, the church building should coordinate with the contemporary background and geographical characteristics, otherwise a sense of imbalance will occur, and the original definition of the building itself will be lost.

我们更喜欢说我们在低吟一首赞美诗|We prefer to say, we’re crooning a hymn.

我们更多的思考在于，东方地域与西方传统教堂的融合，如何才能达成安宁、圣洁的同时，又超越的宗教空间的本质？在仍为奇观和媚俗所累的大环境中，设计师希望做出有生命的、可对话的建筑，这是LAD（里德）设计机构的团队达成的共识。白教堂与本土人文相协调的同时，以建筑与这个城市和人群有对话和共鸣，我们更喜欢说，我们在低吟一首赞美诗，弥散出安宁与祥和。

We should think more about how to achieve a peaceful and saintly state while exceeding the essence of the religious space, with the integration of Eastern region and Western traditional church. Burdened by wonders and worldly preference, the stylist hope to create an architecture with the soul, which is also a consensus reached by LAD design team. While coordinating with the local culture, the White Church communicate and resonate with the city and its people. We prefer to say that we are crooning a hymn, diffusing peace and harmony.
