At the heart of my work is a fascination with the mundaneness of the everyday. Objects are overlooked, they become invisible in this blur of overfamiliarity with the daily inattention. When we look at the everyday objects we don’t stop to think about them, in ways of colour, shape and form, we just accept what they are, no questions are asked. With Supermarket Simulacrum I wanted the objects/ the fruit to take on this even more so, with camouflaging them into the background, however at the same time, making us more aware of them, making us think about the objects more, looking at the image again and again questioning the content. I want the viewer to question the reality of the objects, the marble outer layer suggesting the fruit is not however next to the images of the sliced fruit revealing the existence.

At the heart of my work is a fascination with the mundaneness of the everyday. Objects are overlooked, they become invisible in this blur of overfamiliarity with the daily inattention. When we look at the everyday objects we don’t stop to think about them, in ways of colour, shape and form, we just accept what they are, no questions are asked.

Not only do objects intrigue me but general everyday life, such as surroundings, people and experiences. This can be seen in my practice in works such as ‘Barcelona’ (2012) and ‘It Was Fun’ (2010 – ongoing), capturing what’s going on around me, particularly drawn to those little ephemeral moments that crop up so often when exploring new places. With these works I want them to be real, capturing moments, unique experiences, for example, one of the photographs portrays my hand after a firework accident.

Currently, throughout my practice I am interested in interrupting the everyday, playing around with the overlooked aspects of the ready made, altering the overly familiar through means of manipulation. Achieving a surreality within the work, I alter perception, examining the change between what we see and what is actually there, fabricating a reality. The abandonment of information is an important process in my practice looking at notions of how we can confront limits of visibility, creating illusions.

In earlier works such as ‘Monochrome Texture’ (2012-13), portrait paintings using a singular colour with the use of marks and texture forming the image. Similarly with the objects in ‘Supermarket Simulacrum’ I wanted to create a flat image, a form of trompe l’oeil where at first glance the canvas appears to be simply a black/ white surface but with light revealing marks, form becomes apparent, the image unravels.

With my practice I plan to continue with my current theme of recording the everyday, exploring new places, experiencing new things. With my on-going work ‘Supermarket Simulacrums’, I plan to expand my use of objects, looking at things other than fruit, and develop different techniques of painting (specialist decorative techniques) such as stone, leather, verdigris.
