Our goal was to create a vibrant and breathtaking temporary garden that captures the spirit of the city. However, we faced the challenge of limited time and budget, while also striving to minimize waste and environmental impact. To overcome this, we took an eco-friendly approach, implementing low-carbon landscaping techniques and incorporating modular installations to optimize efficiency and reduce costs. By harmoniously blending natural elements with innovative technology, we successfully created a stunning and thought-provoking garden featuring recyclable materials and plants.

Design Concept: An Eco-friendly Home Between Mountains and Sea | Inviting Urban Life in Harmony with Nature
The design of the garden is inspired by Shenzhen’s lush green spaces, its multi-center structure and unique location between mountains and sea.The garden celebrates the city’s romantic nature by incorporating elements such as rolling terrain, water bodies, and diverse plant communities. It also highlights Shenzhen’s sustainable approach through the inclusion of art installations. In response to Shenzhen’s green development strategy, the sponge city concept and low carbon initiative are integrated throughout the landscaping techniques.

Mountains: The garden’s undulating terrain represents the mountainous landscape around the city, showcasing biodiversity and rich natural resource with its diverse plant communities.
Sea: The abundant water resources and marine environment of the Pearl River Delta are interpreted into a sustainable water management solution. The rain garden adopts an eco-friendly approach by replacing a concrete foundation with a pond liner, allowing accumulated rainwater to evaporate naturally and return to the natural water cycle.
City: The green buildings in Shenzhen are highlighted by elegant and tall art installations that seamlessly integrate with the surroundings. These PETG 3D-printed prefab installations, ranging from 4.5 to 8 meters, showcase a semi-translucent appearance under sunlight. They represent a combination of advanced materials and innovative structural designs for impressive heights. Additionally, these installations can be swiftly assembled or dismantled on-site and are designed for easy recycling and reusability. The cubes between the installations and the conical tops are covered by perpetual moss, symbolizing lush sky gardens and green roofs. By incorporating reflective materials to provide a broader field of vision, the design captures the essence of Shenzhen as a tech hub and eco-friendly city.
Greenways: The winding greenway connecting all parts of the garden reflecting Shenzhen’s suburban hiking trails, some of which are dedicated to environmental education. Similar to the rain garden, this greenway is not constructed with concrete but instead paved with unpolished gravel and flakes sourced from quarry waste. The greenway and stream naturally intertwine, while the stretching aerial roots and moss-covered gravel evoke the picturesque charm of mountains and rivers, enveloping visitors in a serene and secluded ambiance.

Spatial Planning: Borrowed Scenery and Fusion Gardening
To match with the 10-meter-tall Roystonea regia and Archontophoenix alexandrae, we chose Areca triandra Roxb., Dypsis lutescens and Artocarpus communis as the main landscaping plants to counteract any feelings of disconnect or oppressiveness caused by the varying heights of the plants. The existing and newly introduced plants harmoniously blend with the art installations, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing landscape.

The garden takes into account the lush hills in the distance and Rhaphiolepis indica nearby, ensuring they can be enjoyed by visitors. The open-surface water body in the garden is visible from near to far, and the reflection of the red cotton trees (Bombax ceiba) on the opposite of the greenway provides an additional delightful surprise to visitors.

The “borrowed scenery” technique effectively alleviate the feeling of being overwhelmed by height increments while respecting the existing landscape and environmental foundation. The technique creates a beautifully layered and organized natural space that allows a stunning vista of the garden and beyond.

The garden also features a variety of flowering plants. Orchids like Phaius tankervilliae, Oncidium, Cattleya sp., Dendrobium sp., and Phalaenopsis sp. take center stage with their elegant and elongated shapes. Other plants, such as Strelitzia reginae, Heliconias, Pandanus tectorius (Golden), and Bougainvillea, perfectly complement the green foliage. In addition, we combine tropical and subtropical plants that rarely bloom, such as Agave, Crinums lilies, Phaius tankervilleae, Areca triandra Roxb., Calathea Bicajoux Gecko, and Monstera deliciosa, with various types of bromeliads and aloe vera. This carefully curated mix of plants, featuring lush branches and vibrant blooms, serves as a perfect representation of the distinctive beauty in South China’s plant life.

As a full-fledged practice of circular design, all materials and structures in the garden can be flexibly recycled. Whether they stay in the garden or are removed, remodeled, or decomposed, they will not generate extra waste as parts of a sustainable solution to reduce carbon footprint. After the exhibition ended, the weathered wood and plants were carefully transported back to Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical Garden. There, they underwent another round of thoughtful curation and were seamlessly incorporated into the beautiful surroundings of Youxi Valley, enhancing its natural charm.
