—从浅层次来说,通过感官形成与气味的互动;
Smell is undoubtedly the most active, the most reactive sense to me. In a day to day life saturated with imagery, smells reach me in a unique way : they affect me.
This derives from the particular context of my family and geographical surroundings. I have developed a strong and specific interest in this sense, enough to contemplate upon it as a track of work and research.
My affinity with smells has determined my reflection on the daily emanations surrounding us. My theoretical research stems from this delight/curiosity/regard, and represents the core of my experimentations, and of my practice.
The sense of smell has the most direct memory system, it is the most archaic and instinctive one.Inhaled smells reach the emotional brain, (the limbic one) in the most direct manner. This part
of the brain controls our emotions, it receives and saves our feelings. It comes as no surprise that the sense of smell gives the most intense and direct emotions.
I believe what touches and motivates me in this realm is the shear power of smell’s derived sensations and the feelings they can provide. More particularly, as a graphic designer, the questions this raises are:
How can an impalpable and invisible element have so much effect upon us ? How could we define the relationships between smells and pictures ?Interested in the specificity and functions of smells, how can graphic designers create new sensory experiences ? How can we augment the quality, or impact of a message ?
My research mixes smell and sight to explore the possibilities of smells in graphic design. Its benefits and added value, what it entails, and how to apply this to real life projects.
The definition, function and benefits of smell in my experimentations allowed me to find two precise uses of the smell linked with graphic design.
In both cases, the device has manifested itself as essential to the process of sensations / feelings. In a way, device invites the user to occupy and to manipulate the support in a specific fashion.
It governs choices and conventions which generate behaviors.Though invisible, smell can fit in a communication strategy, as much as the graphic support.
Both uses I propose consider the immateriality of the smell as a strength, a sensory and «inframince» added value to increase the graphic design itself. They also consider its capacity to communicate with us.
The schemes are devised to organize sensory data. The main concerns are :
– during the first impression, reach the senses to establish an interaction
– and in the following uses, it is rather a matter of building a new awareness thanks to the senses,
the perception and the reception of information, thanks to smell.
