LA CRAQUELURE

Restoration of Matteotti square – Badalucco – Italy

The square is a long, narrow area with a slight but definite slope and is overlooked by two rows of tall buildings. The main road linking the whole valley is the fourth side, which breaks the almost rectangular shape and gives a view of the olive groves on the other side of the river. The shadow of the buildings gives the square a certain depth. The surface looks like mud dried and cracked by the sun’s heat, just like “craquelure” ceramics, of which the village is an open-air art gallery – a huge life-size art work. The two-dimensional design acquires a third dimension, the lines gain depth and the ground becomes a surface where cracks of carrying sizes follow the natural order of the place. The flower-beds are laid horizontally, in contrast with the slope of the square, widen and deepen the furrow and emphasize the depth of this simple-seeing surface. The bench, however, stands out and becomes a seat for people of all ages and sizes. The young olive trees, the dominating essence of this geographic area, sprout from the cracks in the surface and create yet another element is the play of volumes; then they proclaim their presence to the long straight river-bank walk. The result, the aim of which was to restore the square while keeping costs down, is an essential design which makes use of poor materials such as decoloured bitumen, with its graininess and inert colour, strong, long-lasting and suitable both for pedestrian and vehiculat traffic, reinforced cement, natural iron and mixed gravel.

The project is classified to the second place to the prize IQU 2009 – “urban innovation and quality” – in the category “Architecture and City” and third place to the international prize “Architettura orizzontale”.
