Paul Chan, formerly senior designer at ASH + co-founder of architectural notebook A:LOG, just launched The Coast and shared his first collection, Either/Or, at Collective Concept at ICFF (May 20-23).

Paul的工作室The Coast秉承着建筑不该止步于美观， 而是要为当今社会中的问题提供解决方案的设计理念, 而这第一个系列的产品也是体现着这样的初衷的。

With The Coast Paul is looking to not only create beautiful buildings but also offer solutions to social problems he sees in today’s environment. For his first collection and the launch of his studio he wanted to create something that would represent this.

Inspired by the conflict between the aesthetic and the ethical in Either/Or by Søren Kierkegaard, The Coast created an austere yet playful lighting series. In an age where we rely on objects designed to serve our every need without asking for anything in return–Either/Or lamps encourage deliberate and emotionally acute interactions between an individual and their source of light. A user’s touch causes the light’s cradle to rock longingly back and forth, controlling the buoyancy and brightness, to “discover the second face behind the one you see”, creating a deliberate and thoughtful interaction between an individual and their light source.

A series of silver translucent curtains suspended 6 inch apart, decreases in length and width as they cascade diagonally across the booth to outline an arch volume. The ensemble of fabric, dark fresco paint, and stained oak flooring coalesce as an immersive backdrop for the light series – Either / Or.
