Who is your favourite architect? Why?
There are many architects that I admire but Zaha Hadid is one of my favorites. Zaha’s flowing geometry creates very dynamic and expressive architecture which makes her designs simply amazing.

What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?
At Cal Poly it’s not just about learning theory. It is known for its “Learn by Doing” philosophy which encourages students to develop their skills through hands-on learning.

What have you gained during the MAD internship?
This internship has given me the opportunity to work on a very complex project. There are so many things to consider when designing a building that I never thought about when I was still in school. This makes me appreciate more all the great buildings I admire because now I realize what it takes to make a building happen.

What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Any suggestion?
It’s just amazing how fast projects get built in China, but I think that it also affects the quality of the construction.

What is your dream?
Travel around the world.

What would you do if you were not an architect?
I am not really sure, I can’t imagine myself doing something else that is not architecture.

What is your dream project?
Anything that is design challenging interests me. It could be any scale.

What is your favourite project in your portfolio? Why?
I don’t have a favorite but there are certain concepts that I like from every project.

Important to the function of any school is ample interior light, ventilation, and specific to the site, a boundary between the private sphere and public areas. The formation of the canyon is a response to fulfilling the needs of a healthy learning environment. The canyon formation also creates a central “heart” that is secure from the public and privately acts as a showcase space for students, visitors, and faculty.

VELLUM FURNITURE COMPETITION
HONORABLE MENTION

PROJECT TYPE:VELLUM FURNITURE COMPETITION
ACADEMIC YEAR:FIFTH YEAR THESIS/ FOURTH YEAR
PROFESSOR:KAREN LANGE,BRENT FREEBY

After investigating different types of networks for my thesis project I wanted to pursue the same concept for the annual vellum competition. The zip tie network was designed to become the seat and the back rest of the chair due to its tensile strength, while the bent rebar acts as a structural frame in which the network suspends from. When the weight of a human body is being applied to the chair the zip tie network distributes the weight into the rebar frame of the chair. The zip tie network also provides a comfortable sitting experience due to its flexibility which allows it to contour to the human body.

The main objective for this course was to explore the methods of advanced digital media to support architectural design and presentation process. The basic guidelines for the project was to use a 4’ x 8’ sheet of any material and maximize the use to avoid the least amount of waste possible. The intent for this project was to design and fabricate a multi-functional furniture. The design consists of a lounge chair that when rotated 180 degrees becomes a coffee table with a magazine compartment. The material chosen was aluminum due to its bending capability that contributed to the design goals.
