当充满个性的你想要在墙上挂点什么与众不同的艺术品时,Thermophores是个好选择。荷兰设计师Tim van Cromvoirt设计的Thermophores是人造的,可以根据光热环境灵敏改变色彩的有机体。它如同珊瑚般的生物结构当被阳光照耀时,就会改变颜色,当阳光离开时,颜色恢复如初。这一切的过程不需要任何能源,仅仅由阳光触动。

Thermophores is an artificial organism which can change its color in reaction to temperature fluctuations in its environment.

In order for the responsive color change to take place Thermophores depends on heat from direct sunlight. Heating causes a reversible chromatic reaction; as sunlight shines down and warms its spiky coral-like structure, a beautiful visual process is put in motion which transforms it in to another color. After the sun fades away and Thermophores magically changed color, it slowly cools down and turns back in to its original color and so completed its life cycle and can start over again. By only making use of the sun’s energy, this process works fully autonomous and independently, it does not need extra energy from man-made electricity.

Energy is harvested from a natural energy source to fuel the life process of theThermophores, just like plants use the sun’s energy to grow.

Like a real living organism this bio-inspired design can change and transform in time and has a relationship with the climate it lives in; which makes it exciting because one never knows when or if the process will take place.On a cloudy rainy day it probably will not change, while on the first warm sunny days of spring the process can take place again.

The organic-looking spiky shapes are created with a self-invented chemical reaction and resemble coral-like structures that can be found in reefs. Each Thermophores crystal is independently formed and then joined together as a bigger shape which gives it great flexibility in creating it; it can be made in any custom shape and size. This makes it also possible to apply it on unconventional places like in or on corners of walls or on ceilings, it can be applied everywhere indoors as long as direct sunlight can reach to it.

These free-form possibilities highlight an important aspect of the shapes itself; that it visually suggest that it really grew on the place where it is applied. Thermophores can be made in a wide spectrum of colors with usually a white base color for best contrast, also other base colors are possible.

About Tim van Cromvoirt

Dutch artist/designer Tim van Cromvoirt graduated in 2011 at the art academy AKV|St.Joost as interactive artist and won the St.Joost Medal for best graduation project. Now he works as artist/designer in his own studio developing his unique bio-inspired designs. During his study while working with software and electronics he saw the resemblance of it back in living systems and started to read more and more about biology. This grew out to a fascination about organisms and Tim started to create his own artificial life forms which are not really defined as autonomous art or applied design but something in between. Besides his own work he also works on applied assignments; physical interactive installations and animations.
