A China Memory Inspires an Olympic Icon

2022年北京冬奥会正在进行，唯一新建的永久场馆——国家速滑馆“冰丝带”，将为中国书写新的奥运篇章。

令人惊叹的“冰丝带”将与“鸟巢”和“水立方”并列成为北京奥运中轴线上的标志性建筑，后两者均是为2008年夏季奥运会而建，使北京成为世界上唯一同时举办过夏季和冬季奥运会的城市。

As the only permanent new venue for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the National Speed Skating Oval (NSSO) will write a new Olympic chapter for China.

The stunning ‘Ice Ribbon’ will stand alongside the ‘Bird’s Nest’ and ‘Water Cube’ which were built for the 2008 Summer Olympics precinct making Beijing the only city in the world to host both a Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

Designed as a spectacular landmark, the NSSO is the main venue for the Winter Olympics speed skating competition and will provide a community sport and training venue after the Games. It was designed by the global sports architecture firm Populous, after winning an international design competition in 2016.

来自 “老北京”的童年回忆
FROM THE CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF AN “OLD BEIJINGER”

对北京传统冬季游戏的儿时记忆，为国家速滑馆“冰丝带”的概念设计提供了很多灵感。

这个游戏就是“冰尜”，也称作“冰陀螺”，这段记忆属于POPULOUS中国区执行总裁和“冰丝带”联席项目总监常雅飞。常雅飞从小就生活在北京，对首都的冬天记忆犹新，在什刹海公园的冰面上，他和他的小伙伴们围着冰陀螺欢笑着玩耍。

A childhood memory of a traditional winter game in Beijing provided much of the inspiration for the conceptual design for the NSSO’s ‘Ice Ribbon’.

The game was “ice tops” and the memory belonged to Tiric Chang, Principal of Populous in China and the project director of the NSSO. Having lived in Beijing since he was a child, Tiric has vivid memories of wintertime in the capital city, laughing and playing with his young friends around the ice tops in the Shichahai Park ice rink.

“高速旋转和跳跃的冰陀螺，看上去似乎有着无限的能量和可能性。”

“这是我在思考奥运速滑的特点时想到的。因此，冰陀螺成为设计灵感的一部分，为场馆注入了强烈的中国记忆。”常雅飞说。

“The traditional ice game in old Beijing involved a high-speed spinning and leaping ice top that seemed to have infinite energy and possibilities.

“That’s what I thought of when reflecting on the characteristics of Olympic speed skating. So, the ice tops became part of the design inspiration injecting a strong Chinese memory into the venue,” Chang said.

就像《人民日报》、新华网和北京冬奥会和冬奥会组委会官方网站在2017年4月的专题新闻报道《国家速滑馆飘起“冰丝带”》中披露的那样，POPULOUS提交的这个编号为A04的“冰丝带”概念设计方案，在总计66家公司参与的全球设计竞赛中最终被选中为国家速滑馆的实施方案，为北京创造了又一个标志性的新场馆，也是2022年冬奥会和冬残奥会唯一新建的永久性大型室内场馆。

Following the worldwide design competition involving over 60 companies, Populous was selected to design the architectural concept scheme for NSSO, creating an iconic new venue for Beijing and the only permanent new venue for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

This win sees the firm involved in their 14th Olympic Games, both summer and winter.

从“冰陀螺”到“冰丝带”的华美演变
A BEAUTIFUL EVOLUTION FROM ICE TOP TO ICE RIBBON

另一个独特的童年记忆则将冰陀螺概念演变为最终的冰丝带设计。

常雅飞自幼就受到家族事业的耳濡目染，祖父母和父亲一直致力于敦煌石窟的研究保护和传承工作。在祖母给他讲的故事中，石窟壁画上的飞天，不是身生双翼，而是凭着绚丽的飘带自由飞翔于天际。

Another distinctive childhood memory evolved the ice top concept to the final ice ribbon design.

From an early age, Chang was captivated by his grandparents and father’s dedication to the study and the preservation of the Dunhuang Grottoes, an important collection of Buddhist art from the Tang dynasty.

Chang’s grandmother told him stories of the grotto paintings which showed flying apsaras, not with wings, but flying freely through the sky with their stunning, colourful silk ribbons.

“敦煌飞天的意境和灵感启发并指引设计团队在“冰陀螺”高速旋转的概念上大胆延伸，为场馆外立面打造出22条旋转光带，不仅将冰面和场馆形态巧妙结合，也完美展现了速滑选手在赛场上高速运动的状态。”

“冰陀螺最终演变成了冰丝带，国家速滑馆的设计是POPULOUS全球设计团队对中国文化和遗产从‘写实’到‘写意’的美丽诠释，”常雅飞解释说。

“It guided the design team to boldly extend the concept of a high-speed rotating ice top to creating 22 rotating light bands for the façade, which not only represent the ice surface and the shape of the oval, but also perfectly demonstrate the high-speed movement of speed skaters.

“The ice top transformed into an ice ribbon and the design of NSSO created a beautiful interpretation of Chinese culture and heritage from figurative to abstract by our global design team,” Chang explains.

除了华美的外观，速滑馆在设计过程中也就其实用功能进行了周全的考虑。速滑馆椭圆形的整体设计，一方面能有效利用空间以容纳12000名观众，使其同时满足国际奥委会（IOC）和国际滑联（ISU）的所有赛事技术要求。另一方面，该设计有利于营造竞赛氛围，让速滑刀的每一个动作、声响能被椭圆赛场的每一个人看到和听到。

In addition to the beautiful appearance of NSSO, the design process has also been thoroughly considered in terms of its practical functions to meet the requirements on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Skating Union (ISU). Importantly, the design also adds to the intense and exciting atmosphere where every movement and sound of the speed skating blades can be seen and heard by everyone in the oval.

“美观性和实用性在国家速滑馆的设计中得到了完美统一。”常雅飞说。

“Aesthetics and practicality are perfectly unified in the design of NSSO,” Chang said.

全球团队共同打造“冰丝带”
A GLOBAL CREATION

虽然设计概念源于中国记忆，但国家速滑馆是POPULOUS全球多个团队共同合作的结果。

Although the design concept originated from a memory of China, NSSO is the result of a global collaboration across multiple Populous offices.

“我们在北京、澳大利亚布里斯班、印度、英国伦敦和美国丹佛的团队密切合作，同时借鉴了我们在2006年意大利都灵冬奥会林格托大道速滑馆（Oval Lingotto）和2014年索契冬奥会俄罗斯菲施特奥林匹克体育场（Fisht Stadium）的设计经验，以及我们在全球设计的其他奥运场馆项目。”

“国家速滑馆独特的外立面展现了速滑运动的精确度、节奏感和戏剧性，并在标志性的奥林匹克公园中占有一席之地，与北京的‘鸟巢’和‘水立方’相得益彰。”常雅飞说。

“Our teams in Beijing, Brisbane, India, London and Denver all worked together, drawing on our experience from Oval Lingotto in Turin, Italy and our design of Fisht Stadium in Russia, home of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, as well as our worldwide Olympic and arena experience.

“The NSSO’s distinctive façade celebrates the precision, pace and drama of speed skating and takes its place in the iconic Olympic Park, complementing Beijing’s ‘Bird’s Nest’ and the ‘Water Cube’,” Chang said.

The light strands (or ribbons) flow up and around the Oval, cocooning it to a height of some 33.8 metres. This ‘shell’ secures a high level of visitor comfort and amenity, in keeping with it being the world leading speed skating venue for competitors and spectators.  At night, the facade creates an exciting spectacle, with each of the strands becoming dynamic ribbons of light, able to change to an endless array of lighting programs.

As the owner of the NSSO, Beijing National Speed Skating Oval Operation Co., Ltd. also spoke highly of Populous’ work:  “Populous is the leading architect, who has successfully carried out the concept design and schematic design of the China National Speed Skate Oval, for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, to be staged in Feb 2022. Populous were the declared winner from a massive international design competition that applied by over 60 international and domestic competitors in 2016. We worked closely with Mr. Andrew James and Tiric Chang from Populous during the years from the beginning of the design to the completion of the construction who have led the design team and very well justified Populous’ international reputation in sports architecture. The Natioal Speed Skate Oval is not only a world-class sports facility designed to be among the best in the world, but also brings an international landmark to Beijing and enhances the landscape and urban fabric of the area.”

“In the future, NSSO will be the perfect venue for people to visit and play ice sports, just like the game of ice top they played with their families on the ice when they were kids,” said a delighted Chang.

当全世界在今年2月北京冬奥会期间看着 “冰丝带 ”点亮的时候，观众们会想起中国的历史和文化是如何影响了国家速滑馆的设计，油然而生出感同身受的民族自豪感，并向世界展现一种崭新的中国形象。

When the world is watching the ‘Ice Ribbon’ light up during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games this February, spectators and viewers will be reminded of how history and culture influenced the design of the NSSO to present a sense of place for the Chinese and a new image of China to the world.
