外滩建筑节（RAM assembles）是上海外滩美术馆发起的双年展项目，以建筑思考为核心，旨在探索建筑在塑造公共空间的过程中不断演变的角色。项目由馆长及首席策展人朱筱蕤构想并主导，首届外滩建筑节于2023年举办，以纪念洛克·外滩源项目的竣工，以及美术馆新大门与博物院广场的启用。

RAM assembles is the Rockbund Art Museum’s (RAM) biennial festival of architectural thinking. Conceived and led by X Zhu-Nowell, the museum’s Executive Director and Chief Curator, the initiative explores architecture’s evolving role in shaping public space. The first edition was launched in 2023, celebrating the completion of the ROCKBUND construction project and the opening of RAM’s new entrance and Museum Plaza.

每届建筑节邀请一位建筑师或建筑思想家担任艺术总监，委托其为洛克·外滩源街区，特别是美术馆的露天入口——博物院广场——设计建筑介入作品，并策划一系列激活街区空间的公共活动。

For each edition, an architect or architectural thinker is appointed as Artistic Director and tasked with developing a site-specific intervention in the ROCKBUND neighborhood, focusing on the open-air Museum Plaza outside RAM’s main entrance. In addition to this spatial intervention, the Artistic Director curates a series of public programs and events that activate the broader ROCKBUND neighborhood.

朱筱蕤邀请曼谷建筑事务所all(zone)担任外滩建筑节2025艺术总监。以“上海野餐”为主题，all(zone)构想了一个灵活、开放的框架，在欢聚、创造与生态意识中重新激活未被充分利用的城市空间。借助可重复使用的轻质篷顶与因地制宜的设计，“上海野餐”邀请市民和观众以一种即兴、有趣且出乎建筑师和设计师预料的方式体验城市。

For the 2025 edition, Zhu-Nowell has invited all(zone), a Bangkok-based architecture practice, to serve as Artistic Director. Their concept of “Shanghai Picnic” proposes a flexible, open-ended framework that reactivates underused urban spaces through conviviality, creativity, and ecological awareness. Using lightweight, reusable canopies and adaptive programming, Shanghai Picnic invites citizens and visitors alike to experience the city in ways that are improvisational, playful, and often unexpected — beyond what architects or designers might anticipate.

野餐的本质在于选择：选择落脚之处、选择餐食器具、选择参与方式——或是积极共塑体验，或是保持距离远观。这种非正式的、即兴的特质将城市转化为共享的画布、铺展开的野餐毯，让每一次活动、自发的交流和集体的想象都融入空间本身。

At its core, a picnic is about choice: people decide where to sit, what tools and utensils to use, what food to bring or buy, and how they engage — whether up close as active participants shaping the event, or from a distance as observers. This informal, improvisational element transforms the city into a shared canvas, a kind of picnic blanket, where spontaneous interactions, collective imagination, and activities become integral to the space itself.

设计与即兴的交融催生出在城市肌理中栖居的新方式，孕育更具流动、能有效回应、看重应变而非永续的公共空间新理念。一场野餐或许无法弥合都市的割裂，但能激发能动性，允许人们重新将周遭空间化为己用，以虽短暂却充满意义的在场、行动与选择实现“外滩建筑节”的美好愿景。

The interplay between the designed and the improvised engenders new ways of inhabiting the urban fabric, suggesting a more fluid, responsive approach to public space — one that values adaptation over permanence. While a picnic may not resolve issues of urban estrangement, it cultivates a sense of agency, enabling people to reclaim their surroundings, make the space their own, and realize the festival’s vision through their presence, actions, and choices — fleeting yet meaningful.

Rapid urbanization and gentrification often disconnect individuals from their living environments, creating an estrangement that is particularly evident in many Asian cities. Vibrant neighborhoods that have evolved organically, shaped by collective activities, are increasingly replaced by sterile urban developments, which do not take into consideration the pre-existing culture of the neighborhood and its human physical and social interactions. As these conditions increasingly come to dominate urban living, how can we empower city residents with autonomy over their space and agency within it? How can architecture enhance contemporary connections between people and their living environments? How can we infuse notions of community, diversity, ecology, and vitality into sterile spaces with spontaneity, yet without chaos? Both RAM assembles and all(zone) seek to address these questions.

Curatorial statement from all(zone) architects

“外滩建筑节”（RAM assembles）中的assemble（集结）一词和我们产生了很深的共鸣。这行动的号召迫切而充满能量、关乎社群，也关乎人们的汇集。更重要的是，它听起来就充满乐趣。

The word “assemble” in RAM assembles resonates with us. It’s a call to action—urgent, time-bound, and full of energy. It speaks of community, of coming together, and, most importantly, it sounds like fun.

上海日新月异，全球化的张力具现。紧密的社群生活与高度规划的巨型街区交织，自发的日常生活与冷漠的城市尺度格格不入。于是，宽阔的公共空间让人倍感疏离。然而，城市不仅是其中的建筑：城市的生命来自生活其间的人群、他们在城市流动的韵律，以及无法被规划的不期而遇。

Shanghai, a metropolis in perpetual transformation, makes a global tension palpable. Its urban fabric—a unique tapestry of dense, communal life woven against hyper-planned megablocks—creates a visible friction between spontaneous ritual and indifferent scale. The result is vast public spaces that challenge our sense of belonging. But a city is never just its buildings; its true life is found in its people, their rhythms, and the unplanned moments that give it life.

We see ROCKBUND during RAM assembles as a site of experimentation, a place to test these ideas in real time. It’s where we come together to explore, create, and redefine what living in urban space can be. It will not be a set of answers, but as a public laboratory. Its legacy will be measured not in permanent structures, but in the questions it raises and the observations it generates—observations on how we might truly live, work, and play together in the cities.

“上海野餐”公开征集项目
Shanghai Picnic Open Call Projects

除了设计博物院广场上的巨型篷顶和策划公共活动，all(zone)还征选了六个国内外新锐设计团队，在外滩源公共空间围绕三个主题创作介入式项目：“如何建造——并持续革新”、“集体智慧”，以及“有限中的建造：资源、气候与延续性”。

In addition to designing a vast canopied public space in the Museum Plaza and curating a series of events, all(zone) have selected six local and international emerging design practices to create interventions within the public space of the ROCKBUND. These open call projects respond to three broad themes: How to Build—and Keep Transforming; Collective Intelligence; and Creative Sustainability and the Life of the Built Environment.

介入项目的征集旨在探索并理解亚洲城市的栖居挑战与可能。最终脱颖而出的团队不仅契合文化交流的宗旨，更成功策划出以共享、展演、灵活应变、即兴创意与生态责任为核心的多元化项目。他们的创作秉承“野餐”精神，聚焦食物、社区日常、行为艺术、生态设计、可持续性及合作叙事等主题。

The open call projects aim to explore and understand the challenges and possibilities of urban inhabitation in Asia. These design practices were selected based on criteria of cultural exchange and diverse programming centered on sharing, performance, adaptability, spontaneity, and ecological responsibility. Their projects embrace the spirit of a picnic, engaging with themes of food, community rituals, performative arts, ecological design, sustainability, and collaborative storytelling.

本次公开征集项目将包括：公共饮用水站、利用再造材料制作家具的工作坊、将旧衣物转变为现场座垫的“织物与记忆”装置，以及以多种形式回归的绿意——这些介入让建成环境更通透、宜人，同时更具生态敏感度。

The open call projects will include, among other things: a fresh drinking water station, a furniture-making workshop using upcycled materials, and a “fabric and memories” installation where old clothing is turned into new cushions for people to sit on throughout the event, and the reintroduction of greenery in various forms, turning the built environment into a more permeable, inviting, and ecologically sensitive space.

Against Material Botox: Designing for Sweat and Airflow in Buildings: Mae-Ling Lokko, Assistant Professor at Yale University School of Architecture, September 14, 2025
Mae-ling Lokko, an architectural scientist, designer, and educator from Ghana and the Philippines who works with agro-waste and renewable biobased materials, will discuss the concept of comfort in modernity, examining building and bio-materials in contrast to geo-materials.

Planetary Potluck: Bart-Jan Polman, Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at Columbia University GSAPP, September 12-27, 2025
This series invites speakers to bring one or more items to the “potluck.” Through these items, and with the moderator, they discuss their projects/research/work. The aim is to imagine and amplify infrastructures that are not only technically effective, but also ethically grounded, environmentally attuned, and socially just— bridging the local and the planetary in generative ways.

刨冰分享会：泰·卡彭特，普林斯顿大学建筑学院助理教授。
2025年9月13日
本次“刨冰分享会”关注城市中的老旧水利基础设施，邀请与会者共同畅想更具韧性和实验性的公共空间，探索环境正义的未来。讲座主持人泰·卡彭特将分享她的两个设计案例：“新消防栓”将消防栓改造成饮用水站点，“集结地”将闲置空间转变为可促进环境再生的活体实验室与雨水花园。此外，来自工作建筑工作室的设计师将讲述为“上海野餐”设计的公共水站“向上的水管”。
演讲结束后，嘉宾将围绕纽约、多伦多和上海三地的公共水利问题展开对话。活动现场提供使用上海自来水制作的刨冰, 以此探讨水质问题并呼应“上海野餐”的主题。

Shaved Ice Talk: Tei Carpenter, Assistant Professor at Princeton University School of Architecture, September 13, 2025
This talk focuses on engaging the public with the life of legacy water infrastructures as a means to collectively envision resilient, experimental civic spaces and an environmentally just future. Tei Carpenter of Agency—Agency, New York will discuss her design projects New Public Hydrant which transforms the fire hydrant into a site for clean drinking water and Staging Grounds which turns a vacant urban space into a living laboratory and stormwater gardens for environmental regeneration. WWWorks of Shanghai will discuss their project Pipe UP! which is a public water station designed especially for RAM assembles: Shanghai Picnic. A lively cross-cultural dialogue around public water in New York, Toronto and Shanghai will follow the presentations focusing on the role of design in cities and the opportunities for accessing public water. Local shaved ice will be served and shared that uses Shanghai’s tap water to discuss water quality and to embrace the theme of “Shanghai Picnic.”

Co-founded by Rachaporn Choochuey, all(zone) is a Bangkok-based design studio dedicated to exploring the complexities of contemporary tropicality through a playful and inventive approach. Built on close collaboration, the studio draws inspiration from Bangkok’s informal character, using the city as a fertile ground for continuous experimentation with light, adaptable, and resourceful designs. Central to their philosophy is viewing Southeast Asia as a critical planetary site—a living laboratory where strategies for a warming world are tested in real-time. Their work rarely proposes rigid “solutions,” but instead offers thoughtful “invitations”: joyful frameworks for living well with change. The resulting architecture is intentionally soft, porous, and resilient, designed to thrive amidst the region’s intense climatic and urban pressures.

About Rockbund Art Museum

上海外滩美术馆创立于2010年，是一所上海市注册的非营利性艺术机构。美术馆位于一栋装饰艺术风格的历史保护建筑，建成于1933年，最初为亚洲文会所用，后由戴维 · 奇普菲尔德建筑师事务所进行修复和改造。

Inaugurated in 2010, the Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) is a contemporary art museum located on the Bund in Shanghai. The museum is housed in a historic Art Deco building from 1932 that was originally built for the Royal Asiatic Society. The landmark building was restored by David Chipperfield Architects.
