Pincher - Bike Hanger by Karl Mikael Ling

form the designer : Pincher is a simple way to showcase your bike and keep it off the floor. Both visually and structurally light, each part of the design fulfills the task it was made for with no gimmicks.

The hanger consists of two parts, a mounting plate routed from a solid block of aluminum and a machine bent steel wire hanger.

The aluminium mounting plate is simply and discreetly attached to the wall using two screws. The hanger itself pinches the mounting plate, connecting into precut grooves. Both parts have a super matte coating, almost ceramic to the touch. The hanger’s lack of shine and minimal geometry help make the bike the foremost object on the wall. At points of contact with the bicycle, the hanger is padded with industrial grade polyurethane. The soft low-friction pads neither scratch nor scuff the bike frame.

Pincher is designed and manufactured in Sweden, with all of the suppliers within driving distance of the workshop.

Pincher was designed with traditional, horizontal top tube, diamond frames in mind. Pincher has been thoroughly tested on brick, concrete and wooden walls. The plugs and screws delivered with each Pincher should work ideally on these types of walls. If the screws are firmly set in the wall, the hanger should be able to carry bikes weighing up to 30kg.

”Living in a one room flat, I found bicycles to be an interior design challenge. A bike easily comes to define or even clutter a small space, and using a hanger adds another variable. None of the existing hangers seemed to help. Most hangers are more conspicuous – and far less graceful – than the bikes they carry. Pincher was my solution. A no-nonsense object that serves the bike, and the room.”

Karl Mikael Ling is an architect and designer based in Malmö, Sweden. Pincher is his first commercially available solo project.
