Why going abroad?

To see the world outside, adopt a different mindset, and simultaneously explore different possibilities for the future.

What impressed you the most when you are abroad?

The relatively free and brave mindset. Most of the classmates I met along the way are willing to spend time exploring options for their lives, whether it’s pursuing a slow rural life or making a name for themselves in their respective industries. They are not afraid to make mistakes and fearlessly move towards their ideal lives.

What do you miss the most about China?

The lively atmosphere of living.

Will you come back? Why?

When the time is right, I will consider returning to contribute to the development in my home country and bring my own style to the domestic design scene.

Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?

After going abroad, my perspective on things has become broader. I now have a deeper understanding of things I used to praise or criticize. After contemplating the motivations or reasons from different aspects, my perception of China has become more three-dimensional and comprehensive.

What are the educational characteristics of your school?

The teaching style at USC is highly exploratory, with each professor having a distinct design style. Moreover, the professors are practicing designers with projects in various markets, allowing me to perceive how they genuinely apply the concepts taught in their courses to real-world design projects. This has greatly inspired my understanding of how design concepts can be implemented in practice.

What are the characteristics and interesting points of your firm?

Arcadis is a massive company, with its overall business covering various project types and stages, providing a variety of services. It is precisely due to this diversity that Arcadis is able to provide services to clients at every stage of the project lifecycle, utilizing interdisciplinary expertise and digital technology to deliver a versatile array of solutions.

In my work at Arcadis, I frequently interact with other departments, which has helped me understand that a successful project requires not only good design but also close coordination and collaboration among different departments and stages. Simply relying on good design alone cannot guarantee the success of a project.

Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?

Refik Anadol。

Refik Anadol. In 2017, I had the chance to encounter his work, “the Wind of Boston,” quite unexpectedly, and it left a profound impression on me. He uses creative and forward-thinking digital technology as a medium to transform vast amounts of information into deep visual and auditory experiences. His work is not only innovative in terms of technology but also resonates with individuals on a personal level. The final piece may visually appear as dynamic color transformations, but its richness in meaning and processing logic is remarkably profound.

I believe architecture is also a medium that unfolds many layers of information. Every element has the potential to unravel into a complete story in some dimension, surpassing the limitations of two-dimensional drawings. Interacting with different dimensions allows for rich and layered architecture.

What fascinates viewers the most in your portfolio in your opinion?

The focal point of the portfolio is the exploration of the social aspects of architecture, studying its natural evolution in different social contexts. So, rather than designing architecture, it is more accurate to say that it is an attempt to deduce a product that emerges from the bottom up in a specific societal situation.

The Dallas Forum
2018 Thesis Project

Conceived by I.M. Pei in 1964, Dallas City Hall stands as a groundbreaking achievement that redefined the typology of city halls. However, in light of today’s evolving political landscape, the question arises: does it still align with contemporary political needs? While the public’s desire for political engagement and governmental transparency persists, current methods often rely heavily on media channels. There is a growing recognition for the need to explore alternative avenues for civic participation. Rather than maintaining a distinct and detached political system, a more effective approach might involve creating a new network that seamlessly integrates the political, social, and civic elements. Internalizing these connections has the potential to cultivate a more robust and engaged political involvement for citizens.

Politic vs Culture and commercial Diagram

oversea 125 xiean cai

In the original design by I.M. Pei, the Dallas City Hall’s massive central atrium was a key element expressing the building’s public nature. However, given the current societal needs, this hidden internal public feature falls short. It should be considered to breakdown, flip inside out, introduce new elements, and reconfigure the layout of the City Hall (or even the site) to meet the present requirements.

Deconstruct the City Hall

oversea 125 xiean cai

Rather than functioning as an isolated fortress, Dallas City Hall should be strategically dispersed across the site. This approach not only encourages increased interaction with citizens but also allows for the integration of spaces dedicated to cultural and commercial activities. Crucially, the entire site would be interconnected by a continuous network activated through diverse citizen programs. In this scenario, Dallas City Hall transforms into a singular element within a broader network. The Dallas Forum has the capacity to effectively address citizens’ contemporary political needs, providing a dynamic and responsive space for civic engagement. Cultural programs should be strategically dispersed across the site, acting as attractors to draw people into the forum. Commercial units, aligned along existing pathways, will ensure a continuous connection with downtown. Dallas City Hall, grouped with the assembly, will facilitate political interactions on the plaza. These three integrated elements will transform the plaza into a dynamic space, fostering engagement for both citizens and governmental officials. This approach redefines the city hall typology, creating a new model that encourages interaction and connectivity.

Cultural

This is the first layer of the system to bring people to the city hall and lead them to the plaza to start interaction.
Nine cultural functions strategically populate the plaza, serving as significant attractions to draw people to the site. These functions are evenly situated within the “parcel” delineated by existing paths. Pedestrian pathways, vehicular routes, and subway systems are seamlessly integrated with these cultural infrastructures. All buildings are purposefully designed with distinct public features that extend their programs to the plaza.
This constitutes the initial layer of the system, designed to not only attract individuals to the city hall but also guide them towards the plaza, initiating interactive experiences.

Commercial

As the second component of the network, commercial functions are introduced to the site. Small commercial units are strategically positioned along existing pathways, creating a seamless experience connecting both the city and the plaza. Serving as a buffer between cultural and political activities, these units are designed for diverse activities and maintain a strong connection to the plaza. This distinctive characteristic positions them as a vital network element, not only retaining people on the site but also catalyzing additional activities.

Political

The political network comprises two key elements. Firstly, the sliced original city hall chunks serve as one element. To align with I.M. Pei’s initial design concept and meet contemporary needs, a “public facade” system is incorporated into the sliced chunks. This modification not only preserves Pei’s design philosophy but also actively engages the public in daily political activities. The plaza seamlessly extends beneath the building with no obstructions. Each individual chunk hosts programs related to specific departments, thereby exerting political influence on the public plaza.

As the second element of the political network, the assembly is strategically positioned at the intersection of two major accesses. The grand steps seamlessly continue the plaza without disrupting other activities. The assembly acts as a connecting point at various levels, encouraging people to pass by and stop, fostering increased political interaction. It is open to the general public and serves as a venue for interactive governmental programs, including council and mayor’s office sessions.

▼左:原市政体切分体块 右:新增议会厅,left: original city hall chunks right: new assembly hall

oversea 125 xiean cai

By seamlessly integrating the commercial and cultural content with the innovative political network, the entire site evolves into a comprehensive system that aligns with the dynamics of contemporary citizen life while facilitating meaningful political interactions. The interconnected plaza has transformed into a versatile space, accommodating a diverse array of activities influenced by its surroundings. Citizens can visit, linger, and engage in conversations with fellow citizens or governmental officials. This groundbreaking design introduces a completely new typology for American city halls, not only revitalizing the political system but also challenging the conventional perception of the “fortress-like” American city hall.

Hyper City

CTBUH Student Competition top 5 (teammate: Leqi Lu)

In exploring spatial experience, we argue that people’s perception of a city is intricately connected to the element of time. For instance, walking a 1×1 mile block might define a city for pedestrians, while those with cars might consider themselves part of the same city if travel between them takes less than an hour. These simple examples prompt us to consider how a city could be perceived if transportation time between points A and B were reduced to less than one hour. The upcoming era of hyperloop technology is expected to reshape urban landscapes, and this design will specifically examine how future cities will influence architectural forms. Additionally, it will explore the reciprocal relationship, investigating how architecture can actively contribute to restructuring our understanding of what defines a “city.”

The HyperLoop serves as a conduit, bringing individuals from other metropolitan regions into the heart of Downtown L.A., functioning either as their final destination for work, entertainment, or residence, or as a transient point for further travel. In its role as a direct destination, the building incorporates public areas, offices, and micro-city apartments in response to the high-density and central-urban demands of the site. Diverging from conventional mixed-use towers, the public programs and spaces are vertically organized, fostering interactions at different levels and transforming into a vertical urban park. This continuous urban park is seamlessly linked to the vertical transition system comprising HyperLoop, MetroLink, ground vehicles, and light rail. A city-scale vertical street intertwines these urban parks and the transition hub, forming an interconnected city node. The park additionally functions as a buffer space to accommodate the substantial daily population flow. A vegetation system enhances the urban park, featuring plantable surfaces that attach to both the vertical park and various sections of the tower. Building users, residents, or the general public can engage in planting activities on the urban park or within private vertical farms.

Public programs, such as offices, are strategically situated close to the street level, emphasizing accessibility, while more private programs gravitate towards the upper levels. The public park adheres to this principle as it spirals up in tandem with the tower. The vertical transition hub acts as a multifunctional platform, connecting the tower and the park at specific levels. This platform serves diverse needs and functions as a buffering space during peak hours when handling significant population flows. Individuals enter the offices or park for work or recreation, primarily at the lower levels of the building, seamlessly connected to various transportation systems facilitating movement elsewhere. The hyperloop station becomes a focal point of population flow and establishes a distinct separation between public and private programs at the higher levels.

On the left is a plan illustrating a typical twin-tower configuration, with an office tower on the south side and public programs/park on the north side. These two sides are interconnected by vegetated platforms at specific levels. The 30,000 square feet office level caters to diverse working requirements in the urban context. In the middle is the hyperloop station, serving as a transition level from the bottom of the building (more public) to the upper level (more private). This level connects the two towers and serves as the starting point of the vertical transition system. On the right is a plan depicting a residential tower situated at the top of the building. Each level accommodates 15 apartment units ranging from studios to three bedrooms. Communal spaces are provided every three levels, fostering a sense of community. A vertical farm is attached to the south facade of the residential tower, enhancing the living experience with a village-like ambiance.

Plan

oversea 125 xiean cai

The design of this mixed-use tower serves the city by seamlessly incorporating offices, hotels, and apartments, while also functioning as a central hub for a Vertical Transportation system. It is designed to cater to both local citizens and travelers arriving via the hyperloop from other cities. Individuals can come to the building to live, work, and entertain, with the added flexibility of commuting to different areas of the city, county, or even anywhere in California within an hour. The inclusion of a vertical park and various public programs is anticipated to draw a substantial number of people to the Downtown area. The vertical transition system not only connects the building to the broader urban system but also links the city to a larger urban network. In this scenario, the building not only contributes to the increase in local land value and initiates gentrification but also redefines the boundaries between cities.

03.
Grand Central Brewery

Situated in Downtown Los Angeles, adjacent to the Grand Central Market, the new brewery endeavors to be more than just a traditional brewing facility. Grand Central Brewery seeks to become a vibrant space for all citizens, transcending the typical brewery experience. It aspires to engage a broader audience by inviting people to explore the brewing process and leveraging it as a unique method of brand promotion.

▼Hill Street街景,Street view from Hill Street

The mapping diagram highlights a lack of sufficient attractions and infrastructures around the site. While people commonly visit the area for lunch during the noon hours, the sectional diagram of population reveals a robust daytime population flow that tends to spend only a limited time in the vicinity. These diagrams underscore the importance of leveraging the asset of the substantial population flow on the site. It becomes imperative to strategically integrate the brewery and other programs to entice more individuals into the building. This approach has the potential to not only increase foot traffic but also cultivate a heightened interest in the brewery, addressing the current limitations observed in the site’s activity patterns.

Analysis diagram

oversea 125 xiean cai mcz

The design concept is driven by this notion. To draw in more people from the bustling Hill Street, the building is structured with three distinct “layers.” These layers comprise a highly accessible open path and three public programs (lecture hall, exhibition space, and a tasting bar), all leading to the central brewery program. The strategic arrangement of these programs encourages public engagement and interaction between the layers. Consequently, the building is poised to attract a broader audience, inviting more individuals to actively participate in the brewing process.

The open plaza on Level 1 provides access, featuring a part of the brewery process and a brewing learning space. Level 1 directly interacts with the street, while brewery offices and loading areas are situated at the back of the building to facilitate accessibility for large cargo and trucks. The plan is organized into three layers: the public loop, public attraction programs, and the core brewery processes. The loop, a continuous ramp encircling the entire building, allows people to stop and observe at any point. The middle layer consists of three attraction programs—lecture hall and exhibition spaces—spread along the loop.

Brewing learning zones are strategically placed between attractions, loops, and core brewing processes, serving as a bridge between people and brewers. The innermost layer comprises the core brewery processes, designed in sequence and connected based on similar environmental requirements. City into territory

Venice, a historic city in Italy, is currently grappling with the impacts of the modern world. Once a primary port on the Adriatic Sea, Venice has shifted its focus and now predominantly relies on tourism for its economic sustenance. However, the city faces three major challenges that must be addressed for its continued development in response to evolving social and environmental changes.

oversea 125 xiean cai

Tourist Economy: The local population in Venice is now outnumbered by the influx of tourists, and despite the large number of visitors, they contribute only a small amount of money to the island’s economy. This level of income is insufficient to ensure the healthy growth of Venice. Additionally, the younger workforce is increasingly leaving Venice in search of employment opportunities elsewhere.
Pollution: The Venice Lagoon is already significantly impacted by pollution resulting from daily wastewater discharge. The main contributor to this issue is the lack of water treatment facilities.
Regular Flooding and Sea Level Rise: Venice is frequently subjected to flooding, exacerbated by the rise in sealevels and subsidence of the land.
This project aims to implement a sustainable growth method that integrates new systems while also preserving the historic Venice Island.

Units: The basic units consist of one standard living unit and one handcraft studio. Various combinations of these units can be employed to create spaces for different programs.
Aggregation: By aggregating these units, special opening spaces and entrance conditions can be generated.
Diagrids: A system of diagrids provides 45-degree shortcuts within the 90-degree circulation system.
Vertical Layering: Vertically layering different programs allows for the freedom of growth in all directions without concerns about the absence of specific programs.
Block Aggregation: Aggregating blocks creates more open spaces and longer paths.
Lagoon Diagrids: Pedestrian highways, laid out at 1500ft x 1200ft, along with local 45-degree shortcuts, create additional diagrids at a larger scale.

All these systems collaboratively form a new framework for the growth of New Venice from the existing Venice Island. Each growth phase can be promptly occupied by new residents, each of whom will have their own studio or other types of workspaces. Comprehensive supporting programs will facilitate a comfortable living environment. As the growth attains a certain scale, larger circulation and transportation systems will be integrated. The pedestrian highway will extend further to accommodate potential growth, serving both as a conduit for goods and power. Upon reaching a specific scale, the “Venice-rim” pedestrian highway will make a 90-degree turn and begin vertical expansion into Venice, transporting goods and power to the old island. The completed pedestrian highway rim integrates a water barrier/water lock system to safeguard Old Venice from sea-level rise and establish transportation connections with the new Venice Extension. Upon the completion of the “Venice-rim,” a 35% population growth is anticipated. The system is designed to ensure potential future growth, both inward and outward.
