Project Overview: From Industrial Park to Industry-City Integration

The project is located in Chang’an Town, Haining, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. Known in ancient times as “Changhe” and praised by literati as “Xiuchuan,” the town historically thrived as a canal transport hub. Since 2000, the upgrading of Hangzhou’s industries has driven companies to relocate, and Chang’an has attracted a large number of enterprises thanks to its geographic advantages. The rapid development of the high-tech zone has been achieved through three leaps: from a trading node of the canal era, to spatial expansion in the reclamation era, and on to the industrial and urban reshaping of the Hangzhou-integration era. By 2025, the zone’s permanent population had reached 230,000; it neighbors Hangzhou’s Xiasha university town, where 14 universities host more than 200,000 full-time students. The project’s potential users display a typically migratory and hybrid character.

The Haining High-tech Zone Central Cultural and Sports Center sits in the core area of the high-tech zone (Chang’an Town), roughly 2 kilometers northwest of the Qiantang River, with a total floor area of 60,000 square meters. The project comprises two buildings: the Hanghai Youth Palace extends vertically in volume and horizontally in folded-plate facades, with about 8,300 square meters above ground; the Zhejiang Library Chang’an Branch and the High-tech Zone Cultural and Sports Center extend horizontally in volume and are wrapped in layered vertical wall planes, with about 32,000 square meters above ground—of which the library branch occupies about 4,000 square meters and the cultural and sports center about 28,000 square meters.

The overall layout consists of two buildings with pinwheel-shaped plans. The wall planes of the library and cultural center and the folded-plate language of the Youth Palace extend space in multiple directions. The roofs are redefined by multiple interfaces, and the facades are deconstructed by wall planes and folded plates, forming a spatial image of an endless cycle between openness and enclosure.

The Youth Palace

Materially, the two buildings use two types of concrete: reddish-brown and grayish-white. The reddish-brown echoes the sedimentary memory of the Qiantang River’s fish-scale seawall, responding to the history of Changhe and Xiuchuan; the grayish-white corresponds to the color of the sky, alluding to the promise of the new district’s future. Tectonically, the thickness, spacing, and offset of every wall and every slab are arranged in precise geometric relationships—constructional precision serves not only functional and structural efficiency, but also the spatial concept.

Layered Screens: From Painting Medium to Spatial Operation

Rooted in the traditional Chinese idea of “the unity of nature and humanity,” Chinese architecture pursues an existential experience in which self and world, interior and exterior, become one. In The Double Screen: Medium and Representation in Chinese Painting, Wu Hung observes that within the vastness of Chinese culture it is difficult to find another object whose practical function and symbolic meaning are so thoroughly entangled with the concept of space. The screen is an aesthetic origin of the Eastern artistic spirit—dividing space while connecting time, and carrying Eastern civilization’s reflection on space, time, and being.

Nested layered screens

Unlike the absolute separation of walls or the complete transparency of colonnades, the screen establishes an adjustable relationship between concealment and openness—sight can pass through, the body can detour, and space can be defined. The spatial logic of “separated yet never severed” is translated here into a system of wall planes and folded plates: walls no longer merely bear loads and enclose, but become constituents of the spatial interface—layering, shifting, rotating, and folding to define continuous, flowing boundaries. The offset of the wall planes preserves the possibility of passage for sight and body, while the continuity of the folded plates maintains spatial integrity: a materialization of “separated yet never severed” in the language of contemporary construction.

The layering and folding of wall planes and folded plates blur the singular directionality of spatial sequence; movement is no longer confined to a prescribed route—one may pass through, linger, or turn back. This “non-directionality” is not chaos but a precisely controlled freedom; the behavioral possibilities released by the layered screens are defined as “wandering among screens.”

Layered screens as “memory slices” © DONG image

Layered screens as “memory slices”

Rooftop scene

In this wandering, the body is no longer a vehicle of narrative but the subject of spatial perception. Users are not forcibly guided; they may choose to pass through, linger, or return—wandering is itself the purpose. The ambiguous zones formed by the layered screens allow users to slow down, observe, hesitate, or even stop—pausing becomes an event legitimized by space. Wandering thus becomes an “architecture of deceleration”: it neither seeks the shortest path nor rewards the fastest arrival, but spatially supports the body’s hesitation, turning, and lingering.

The Dialectic of Openness and Enclosure

The overwhelming majority of the high-tech zone’s population are migrants. In the community’s everyday psychology, the openness of integrating into Hangzhou and embracing new industries stands in continuous tension with the enclosing impulse to guard local identity and seek secure territory. Place-attachment theory in human geography notes that a sense of belonging is continually dissolved by frequent movement. This project explores how that psychological tension can be transformed into an operative theme of the spatial interface.

Openness is expressed spatially through large expanses of glass, sight-piercing gaps between wall planes, and a lifted ground floor directly connected to the central plaza—users feel connected to the city while also exposed to the public gaze. Enclosure takes the form of thick solid walls, small window openings, and introverted courtyard spaces—offering shelter and the possibility of screening oneself from scrutiny.

The contribution of the layered screens lies in dissolving the opposition between openness and enclosure, making space a continuum that can be switched and shared. Within a few steps, users move from openness to semi-openness and on to relative enclosure. This capacity to switch is itself a spatial response to psychological tension—acknowledging that both anxiety and shelter are normal, and allowing autonomous movement between the two.

An Abstract Place and the Longing for Belonging

The project does not replicate any concrete regional style, such as the Jiangnan water towns or traditional gardens; what it carries is “the enduring longing for belonging of a community in migration.” The spatial vocabulary of wall planes and folded plates alludes to the superimposed traces left on the same site by groups of different cultural backgrounds and different times of arrival. Each screen can be read as a “slice of memory”—the enclosing walls of the industrial park, the concrete frames of the new district, the infill interfaces that may be adjusted again in the future. This spatial stratification allows the building to become a materialized expression of hybrid memory. Unlike the singular narrative of a monument, the layered screens accommodate plural, even contradictory, collective memories. Rather than telling one unified story, they provide a framework in which multiple narratives coexist—seeking not “consensus,” but “coexistence.”

Southwest corner

When architecture is endowed with the imagery of the screen, its essence breaks free from the modernist cage and returns to its ontological status as part of the “lifeworld”—offering no definitive answers, but dignified space for uncertain existence. What the layered screens provide is not a single path, but a possible way—grown from Eastern spatial wisdom—of responding to the uncertainty of being through the operation of interfaces.
